  1. Hello.
  2. Sorry there's beeping going on here. Hello. I hope everyone is doing well.
  3. Um it is week number five after this week we'll have
  4. about two weeks to go so it's pretty crazy how fast
  5. these seven week courses go by um and it is starting
  6. to look and feel more like the holidays getting through thanksgiving.
  7. I hope everyone had a fabulous thanksgiving and now we're on to the next right.
  8. It's always, it does tend to seem like a push going into the end here.
  9. Alrighty um november 30th and then this week will end on december 6th.
  10. That seems weird to be saying that so let's get rolling.
  11. Um this is going to be a little out of order this week as I,
  12. as I roll through this video it'll be a little off because
  13. I think for the content that I have in this week,
  14. I think it's really helpful to know what the assignment
  15. is before you get into the readings and whatnot.
  16. So so know that it'll be a little different than the normal.
  17. Okay, let's do that quick recap. Last week was all about addy you VD.
  18. Community of inquiry and then there were a bunch of learning activities
  19. which really should have been review for you.
  20. Those activities itself are probably things that you're already doing.
  21. So you maybe felt a sense of validation which is great
  22. and remember addie was that analyze design, develop, implement,
  23. evaluate and then we had universal by design and then community inquiry,
  24. that framework and I mentioned in the video and as you read,
  25. you probably found bits and pieces that you liked and,
  26. and bits and pieces that you didn't like.
  27. You don't have to stick with just one right? You can use pieces of each.
  28. So I hope you found something to fit your needs and also again,
  29. validate what you're already doing, which is great.
  30. Now we're getting into the meat of technology
  31. and how to utilize technology in our classroom
  32. versus just plugging kids in on a game or a book. So
  33. that's where we're rolling this week.
  34. Um,
  35. I want to go through the readings and videos through
  36. this course for this week and then we'll talk assignments.
  37. So this week in the lesson planning book,
  38. you're going to have chapters seven and eight.
  39. It really ties into social emotional learning here and how
  40. that should be really embedded into our lesson plans.
  41. It's really when we talk 24 century, um,
  42. instruction SCL has to be embedded into everything we do now,
  43. no matter what grade level we teach, no matter what content area we teach.
  44. So chapter seven is really dedicated to that piece, which I think is vital,
  45. almost more vital than they probably originally thought when they wrote this book.
  46. Um, again, thank you, Covid, We do a lot of that, don't we?
  47. And then we have a very short chapter on planning with purpose and there are some,
  48. I wanna, you know,
  49. mention there's a couple of templates and things as you get into the appendix,
  50. that I found useful and maybe you'll find something that
  51. you want to base your planning of going forward.
  52. Okay. And then in this book
  53. this week you're reading chapter four
  54. which is research based instructional design.
  55. Now this again,
  56. this book um is really reviewing the research
  57. and the theory behind designing our lessons.
  58. Um This particular chapter though has a lot of graphics that were helpful for me.
  59. But then on page 1 54 I really liked how
  60. there's a Venn diagram and then there's another chart.
  61. But it really emphasizes the experience as
  62. a whole and making learning and experience.
  63. And it talks about cognitively for the kiddos.
  64. It talks about your presence as that teacher and how you
  65. are facilitating and it talks about the social piece of it.
  66. So I did find chapter four to be very very very useful.
  67. Okay, there are also a couple of things
  68. throughout this particular
  69. week.
  70. There's two other readings,
  71. that one's about 10 pages long and one is about 20 almost 30 pages long and it's
  72. really effective integration into technology into our curriculums
  73. and then scaffolding learning in the 21st century.
  74. They're really good.
  75. Um and again, you might find moments of validation in there,
  76. but you're going to pick up pieces that I think you will find very very helpful.
  77. Then throughout this entire module there is about an hour,
  78. just over an hour worth of videos, there's a lot of videos,
  79. they're pretty short and sweet
  80. but I really like to intertwine that in with
  81. the narrative piece so we can access everyone's learning.
  82. Okay, let's go through the assignment preview.
  83. I think this should help you going forward now.
  84. This week particularly
  85. I'm just going to page forward on my other screen,
  86. so I have that piece right in front of me.
  87. So the assignment itself is called digital pedagogy and
  88. there's a lot of choice behind it this week.
  89. So again,
  90. I think it's important to understand what's expected before all
  91. of the literature and things you're going to read.
  92. So the digital pedagogy you're going to have a
  93. choice and how you want to present the content.
  94. You can do a paper, you can make an e book, you can make a website, you can make a video.
  95. The Sky's the limit
  96. and don't feel like you know, you have to okay it with me.
  97. There are a ton of different things you can do to present that info.
  98. So what you're gonna do is you're gonna look back on
  99. previous assignments because you're going to use those in this.
  100. You're not recreating the wheel here,
  101. you're in addition to so make sure you have with you and ready to go.
  102. You're weak to assignment
  103. Which was the assessment kind of task piece and then make sure you have access
  104. of the standards goals and objectives from week
  105. three Okay because you're going to be creating
  106. really an overview of digital learning experiences that you can put into that unit.
  107. Okay so you're gonna take what you have and now how can you enhance it more?
  108. So you're gonna really assemble a sequence of digital experiences that you're
  109. going to embed into this unit that you've been focusing on.
  110. Then you're gonna utilize a new model that you're
  111. going to learn about about called the S.
  112. A. M. R. Model to explain
  113. um these digital learning experiences and where they fall on that continuum.
  114. And that will make sense.
  115. Once you get into that then you will use an infographic maker.
  116. There's a bunch of them for free online to create a pedagogy map,
  117. illustrating the learner, the learner centered experiences.
  118. Okay so you're going to have that infographic as part of your assignment.
  119. These directions are all in canvas.
  120. But I wanted you to be thinking about that as you're
  121. learning about all of these different ways to present here.
  122. So just a reminder. Think higher level blooms always with this. Okay,
  123. let's continue on
  124. the first thing the meat of this this particular module.
  125. Week five is going to be introducing digital pedagogy.
  126. Now we use this in our classroom.
  127. Digital pedagogy should be something that you're
  128. pretty solid on in your classroom.
  129. Think Epic khan academy reading a dizzy math games,
  130. cool math games or whatever it's called.
  131. Um I Excel,
  132. things like that you're already using in your classrooms
  133. know that these are really low level blooms.
  134. They're kind of that plug in when you're done with your math worksheet, go on.
  135. I Excel or whatever it is. Low level blooms. So good.
  136. They're good in their own way, but low level. Okay,
  137. now we're gonna work our way beyond more of that.
  138. Then you're going to get into the S A M S A M R model
  139. um Dr Reuben here is going to explain a lot of this to you.
  140. This is his, his theory and honestly I really,
  141. really like it. I wish I
  142. would have learned about this a lot earlier in my career.
  143. The S stands for substitution than a
  144. for augmentation and modification and our redefinition,
  145. that substitution piece is really just,
  146. what am I going to take out of the curriculum?
  147. That's non technology
  148. and what am I going to replace it with?
  149. That's where like the cool math games and things
  150. like that come into their just a substitution.
  151. So we want to be further along on that spectrum.
  152. So it's really moving technology,
  153. that technology tool from an individual
  154. standpoint to really a social interaction and
  155. how can we use technology to be more social versus just plug in.
  156. Um, and how how do we do this? So that's, that's the tricky part. So
  157. now I want to stop and say we have to slow down and we can't feel overwhelmed with this
  158. because this really is one of those things that's
  159. a marathon and not a sprint to get there.
  160. You can't go from the S model substitution to redefinition like this.
  161. Okay, so no it's a marathon, not a sprint. Okay,
  162. I'm going to suggest to as we go through all of these resources,
  163. just own where you are,
  164. it's about your growth also because if you're growing your students will to.
  165. Okay. The next one is web based digital resources.
  166. Um It's really like a website creation piece which is still substitution in a way.
  167. Um where if you were to create a blog
  168. that's more augmentation or have kiddos create a blog
  169. that would be more augmentation um because they are
  170. starting to socially interact with each other through that.
  171. So keep that in mind as it goes through how these might work. Um
  172. Let's continue here
  173. exploring digital media and presentation tools. Um
  174. So that's where we get into,
  175. we move past the website or the blog and we get into digital storytelling,
  176. we get into podcasts, creating podcasts, online whiteboards.
  177. If you've heard of Jam board with google video creations,
  178. presentations with power point.
  179. Um
  180. That's moving into that modification and reinforcement on that S A. M. R. Model.
  181. So um see saw videos, if you use seesaw in your classroom,
  182. having kids create stories through,
  183. see saw that would be more of that modification.
  184. So so hopefully that helps as you're as you're
  185. thinking this through and then there's a bunch of
  186. again a bunch of videos showing us in this
  187. particular module and there's a lot of graphics too
  188. okay, what's on the horizon, is that next piece?
  189. There is a report, the Horizon report from 2017, it's, it's a little long,
  190. but it's super interesting and then there's
  191. another one on teaching and learning in 2021
  192. I would love to see another one come out in the next year or so,
  193. because I think it would be a game changer because from 2021 2 now a lots happened,
  194. so again there long, but they're really thought provoking
  195. and also gets into some artificial intelligence
  196. stuff as you go through that module,
  197. so um peruse that then
  198. as we get, oops and I forgot about the horizon, sorry,
  199. I didn't slide through, so that's just read those horizon reports,
  200. read through the other information on there and
  201. just really think about what's what's to come.
  202. Another thing I should mention there and Duluth does
  203. this in Duluth public schools and blended learning,
  204. they call it and kids are 1 to 1 on
  205. their chromebooks and my oldest is totally immersed in this,
  206. which is really nice.
  207. She's a, she's a student athlete in three sports in a school year and so
  208. she misses a ton of school um and with that,
  209. she's able to always get caught up because the videos get
  210. put in their lectures get recorded and put in there,
  211. so she's always able to get caught up and not feel like
  212. she's missing as much and not playing catch up all the time.
  213. So there's pros and cons to it of course.
  214. But home schooling is another thing we have to think
  215. about when it comes to being on the horizon.
  216. A lot of people are homeschooling now.
  217. Um So there's thoughts on that of course.
  218. Covid Canada does all of this again begin where you are, don't get overwhelmed,
  219. wrap your brain around all this tech.
  220. I am not a big tech person and it's taken me a long time
  221. to get to where I am and it's a slow process and own it.
  222. It's fine. Okay.
  223. The discussion this week is due december 5th by
  224. nine a.m. And it's really based on this week's learning
  225. in your own experiences.
  226. Just give an example on how you can integrate how,
  227. how you're going to integrate or what I
  228. like to integrate technology into your current instruction.
  229. What do you see yourself doing, what's feasible now? Not five years from now.
  230. Now what piece do you feel like you know what I can try this? I can take this on.
  231. Okay then again that assignment due december 6th at nine a.m.
  232. You're utilizing week two and week three. Okay.
  233. Remember that you're not recreating the wheel but be creative with this.
  234. Some people have made websites, some people have done blogs,
  235. some people have made e books,
  236. you're going to have to look at an infographic and how to make one and put it in now.
  237. It says I'm here. 15 pages. Please don't get stuck on that. Okay. Um
  238. Just remember, get the information and I don't want 15 pages.
  239. If you're rambling, I would rather have six. Okay.
  240. And if you're doing a website or a power point presentation or an e book,
  241. it could vary depending on the size and whatnot.
  242. So no panicking. Don't get stuck on that number. I'm not stuck on that number. Okay.
  243. I think that's
  244. that's all I have for you. Lots of wiggle room with this assignment.
  245. I like to see people being creative with it. Feel free to reach out.
  246. If you need anything this week we can jump on a zoom if need be or whatever it is.
  247. You know, I'm here for you. I can troubleshoot whatever.
  248. So I hope everyone's well and recovered from thanksgiving
  249. and here's the final push to the holidays.
  250. The december holidays. Okay? Take care. See you soon. Bye.
