00:01 - 00:05
So with with this website I've been giving a lot
00:05 - 00:10
of information and statistics and just kind of throwing it
00:10 - 00:10
all in your face.
00:11 - 00:14
But what I'm not giving you is information on why
00:14 - 00:16
quality education is so important to me.
00:17 - 00:20
So with this Prezi video, I am hoping to give
00:21 - 00:26
you more of a closer, deeper insight into why I
00:26 - 00:29
chose this topic and why I feel that this topic
00:30 - 00:31
was the best one for me.
00:32 - 00:33
I do want to give a heads up.
00:33 - 00:42
There are talks of discrimination and okay events that might
00:44 - 00:47
might cause you some ruffle feathers if you would say
00:48 - 00:49
so, let's let's get into it.
00:50 - 00:55
We're starting with my experience, but I am a firm
00:55 - 00:59
believer that your identity and the struggles you go to
01:00 - 01:05
correspond with your family and mine especially does with my
01:05 - 01:08
family and my mother was a great impact and is
01:08 - 01:09
a great impact on my life.
01:10 - 01:11
So we're going to be starting off with her.
01:12 - 01:16
My mother was born and raised in Butler County Kentucky,
01:18 - 01:19
a very rural community.
01:20 - 01:22
Her parents were born and raised there.
01:24 - 01:30
My father was also born and raised there and both
01:30 - 01:31
of their families are very similar.
01:33 - 01:36
My mother's father was illiterate.
01:38 - 01:42
He could not spell his name in the same way
01:43 - 01:46
on any given document as I go through all the
01:46 - 01:50
documents she has and all the court records and everything
01:50 - 01:51
else to build a family tree.
01:52 - 01:56
I learned that he could not spell his name or
01:56 - 02:00
just didn't know how His name in total has been
02:00 - 02:01
spilled 15 different ways.
02:03 - 02:08
Yeah, my mother told me a story About my Grandpa
02:09 - 02:09
one day.
02:09 - 02:11
My aunt came home and was so excited to tell
02:12 - 02:15
him about how she had learned what an adam's apple
02:15 - 02:19
was. Now he didn't know what this was, even though
02:19 - 02:22
he possessed it, he had no idea what it was.
02:22 - 02:24
So he struck her and told her she should not
02:25 - 02:32
speak about such obscure things that it was inappropriate for
02:32 - 02:35
her to know this that she shouldn't know anything of
02:35 - 02:35
a man's body.
02:36 - 02:39
He thought it was something related to the genitals.
02:41 - 02:45
Now my mother Worked hard to try and get her
02:45 - 02:49
high school degree but eventually she did what many did
02:49 - 02:50
back in her time.
02:50 - 02:51
She dropped out at the age of 16.
02:53 - 02:57
Got married and had kids and she worked her adult
02:57 - 03:03
life early adult life anyways and fast food living paycheck
03:03 - 03:06
to paycheck to raising her kids, raising my brothers.
03:07 - 03:10
And then one of the time that She had me
03:10 - 03:12
and my sister she decided enough was enough.
03:13 - 03:15
And at the age of 40 she went back to
03:15 - 03:19
college she ended up getting her Gt through western Kentucky.
03:20 - 03:21
She did her G.
03:21 - 03:21
E. D.
03:21 - 03:22
Test here.
03:22 - 03:27
She also got her um early childhood educational degree here
03:29 - 03:31
and she went on to teach and she still teaches
03:31 - 03:34
to this day and from the moment I could talk
03:35 - 03:36
and would actually listen to her.
03:36 - 03:39
She's been driving into my head just how important education
03:39 - 03:43
is now.
03:44 - 03:48
As I said, your family is a great determiner in
03:48 - 03:51
your identity and the situations that will occur in your
03:52 - 03:53
life and it plays into my struggles.
03:55 - 03:58
One of my biggest struggles in education in my earlier
03:59 - 04:01
ages was the discriminations I faced.
04:02 - 04:05
And it's not discrimination based on my skin or based
04:05 - 04:05
on my gender.
04:05 - 04:07
Like so many others have faced.
04:07 - 04:11
This was a discrimination based on my religion.
04:12 - 04:14
I am a jewish descent.
04:15 - 04:19
My mother is a jew which by jewish law makes
04:19 - 04:20
me a jew.
04:20 - 04:24
I am what is known as a cultural jew in
04:24 - 04:28
essence. I participate in holidays and some beliefs but I
04:28 - 04:30
do not follow it to a T.
04:32 - 04:36
Now as a child, I didn't know anything about World
04:37 - 04:40
War Two because as a jewish person, that is a
04:40 - 04:41
lot for you to learn at a young age.
04:43 - 04:46
But I did have to learn it earlier than my
04:46 - 04:50
mother would have liked because people were making jokes, I
04:50 - 04:53
would go to pick up money that someone had dropped
04:53 - 04:55
and they're like, of course it's the jew that picks
04:55 - 04:59
up the money or in home at classes.
04:59 - 05:05
In middle school people, people being like crawl into the
05:05 - 05:09
oven and burn like the rest of them or jokes
05:09 - 05:16
like Let's make it one million and one Now there
05:16 - 05:20
were some teachers that did not stop this, but there
05:20 - 05:22
were definitely some that did and those are the ones
05:23 - 05:27
that impacted me greatly because they showed that it wasn't
05:27 - 05:31
allowed that it wasn't okay And that leads into my
05:31 - 05:40
next one growth just as all things start and all
05:40 - 05:41
things grow.
05:43 - 05:48
So did my education, in my view on education, like
05:48 - 05:51
I said that there were the teachers that stopped the
05:51 - 05:57
people who, who were saying such disgusting things and it
05:57 - 05:58
gave me faith.
05:59 - 06:01
It made me feel that my school was a safe
06:01 - 06:03
place to be, that I didn't have to worry about
06:05 - 06:06
about those type of comments.
06:06 - 06:08
I didn't have to worry about someone acting out against
06:08 - 06:14
me. It was also those same teachers who would sit
06:15 - 06:20
with me and helped me realize that what I learned
06:21 - 06:23
in school wasn't just about passing the time for eight
06:23 - 06:25
hours until my mom got off work.
06:26 - 06:30
It was about being able to travel to distant lands
06:31 - 06:33
in books like the magic tree house and go on
06:33 - 06:36
adventures that I never could to be able to slay
06:36 - 06:43
dragons, to learn new languages, to learn the history of
06:44 - 06:45
the world, to learn my history.
06:48 - 06:51
It's about being able to understand numbers so that I
06:51 - 06:55
could balance my life that I wouldn't go broke.
06:59 - 07:01
It started off rough, but it definitely got better.
07:03 - 07:06
It got way better and it continues to get better
07:06 - 07:07
in my own experience.
07:10 - 07:11
So what's next for me?
07:12 - 07:16
Well, currently I'm working on getting my bachelor's degree from
07:17 - 07:17
Western Kentucky University.
07:20 - 07:24
I'm getting elementary educational degree while doing that.
07:24 - 07:31
I'm also attending mm hmm another university online and getting
07:31 - 07:33
my teaching english as a second language certification.
07:35 - 07:37
And after that I will be traveling abroad to different
07:37 - 07:41
countries. Not all of them are first world countries in
07:41 - 07:41
my plants.
07:42 - 07:44
Some of them are third world countries because I want
07:44 - 07:47
to bring my love for learning to other places.
07:48 - 07:52
And I also want to experience how other countries teach.
07:52 - 07:55
Like for instance, I want to teach one year in
07:55 - 07:56
Finland or in Germany.
07:56 - 08:02
Those those countries have such a great educational foundation that
08:02 - 08:03
I want to learn how they teach.
08:04 - 08:07
I want to learn how they motivate their students.
08:07 - 08:09
And I want to I want to put that into
08:09 - 08:13
practice in countries that that don't have that opportunity that
08:14 - 08:18
struggle, that have every presented thing.
08:19 - 08:22
I've shown you that girls can attend classes during my
08:22 - 08:27
periods. Women are discriminated against, girls can't have a male
08:27 - 08:33
teacher. Um Students don't have textbooks to learn, classrooms are
08:33 - 08:33
not up to standard.
08:34 - 08:35
There are no teachers, stuff like that.
08:43 - 08:44
Sorry, a bit of a flu at the moment.
08:46 - 08:50
Mhm. That's what's next for me, is finishing my degree
08:52 - 08:57
and sharing my love of education in places that generally
08:58 - 09:02
wouldn't see it, The quality education is not met and
09:02 - 09:06
hopefully I can help achieve a higher educational standard in
09:07 - 09:12
my classroom at least You're probably wondering what's on number
09:12 - 09:15
4? I've talked about a lot.
09:17 - 09:20
Well, let's talk about you.
09:22 - 09:23
What's next for you?
09:23 - 09:28
Exactly. Well, you can take any of this information I've
09:28 - 09:31
posted on this website to heart, you can look into
09:31 - 09:32
it for yourself.
09:32 - 09:37
There's a right resource page available for you and you
09:37 - 09:40
can share it, you can send it to people and
09:40 - 09:42
be like, have you heard about this?
09:43 - 09:44
Have you read this?
09:44 - 09:45
Have you seen this?
09:47 - 09:48
Let's do something about it.
09:48 - 09:51
Let's work together to spread the word on quality education.
09:53 - 09:56
Talk to people about how education has changed you.
09:58 - 10:00
Talk to people about how you want a better education
10:01 - 10:10
for others for the next generation, we, we have to
10:10 - 10:12
work together to build a better future.
10:14 - 10:17
We can we can say we're number one in so
10:17 - 10:24
many things and we can say we're the greatest, but
10:24 - 10:28
unless we work together and act like it and achieve
10:29 - 10:33
that statement and make it true, we have no right
10:33 - 10:36
to. But it isn't only our country that we should
10:36 - 10:38
work for, for that it's others as well.
10:38 - 10:43
Because as a as a world, it doesn't matter where
10:43 - 10:44
you are.
10:45 - 10:48
Someone in china can make a product that affects you
10:48 - 10:49
drastically in the United States.
10:52 - 10:56
So when in England can pass a law that creates
10:57 - 11:06
waves of change, someone in a third world country can
11:07 - 11:11
lose out on the opportunity for quality education and not
11:11 - 11:12
achieve greatness.
11:13 - 11:20
They could or Someone in a 3rd world country could
11:20 - 11:24
receive quality education and go on to do great things.
