  1. Hello. I'm Sean Betty.
  2. Today I'm going to be speaking about an invasive species
  3. called zebra mussels.
  4. Zebra mussels are a problem here in the United States
  5. and as a long time ago er to lake George
  6. in new york species.
  7. The species is something that I'm adamant about getting rid
  8. of many things that I enjoy doing at the lake
  9. can be taken away by zebra mussels such as fishing
  10. and going to the beach throughout the next minute.
  11. I will explain why I should care and how you
  12. can help stop the spread of zebra mussels and help
  13. save our lakes.
  14. Yeah, Zebra Mussels are an invasive species native to Europe
  15. and Asia.
  16. In the 1980s cargo ships brought the muscles from their
  17. water from their waters to the United States.
  18. The United States, however, does not have any native predators
  19. to the muscle.
  20. As many diving ducks and carp species do not live
  21. here in the US.
  22. Zebra mussels are filter feeders, meaning they eat microscopic plankton
  23. out of the water.
  24. Along with this, zebra mussels have an extremely high growth
  25. rate. I can take over a body of water if
  26. not properly maintained, The muscles can eat all all the
  27. nutrients out of the water that every other species needs
  28. to survive, ultimately destroying the full food chain.
  29. If that is not enough to dislike the species as
  30. a whole, they can even cost people money through clogging
  31. pipes and decreasing town travel, possibly ruin many small businesses.
  32. Many Lake Town survived based on summer travel and the
  33. boost of income.
  34. If zebra mussels ruin the town's main attractions, their town
  35. could die off economically.
  36. Lake George, for me has become my second home, as
  37. I have been been spending summers there for over 10
  38. years now.
  39. Lake George is renowned Lee known for its clean waters
  40. and good fishing sadly enough.
  41. Our lake does have deeper muscles in it.
  42. However, on a more positive note, Lake George has poured
  43. in thousands of dollars to help remove over 25,000 super
  44. muscles from places throughout the lake.
  45. On the image to my left, you can see the
  46. different places that they were removed from.
  47. I will also note that the area at the bottom
  48. of the image is Lake George Village, the most populated,
  49. and towards the area of the lake, which is no
  50. surprise to have the most zebra mussels.
