00:01 - 00:05
Hi, my name is anna lucy and I did my critical viewing project over Rory flanagan,
00:05 - 00:07
A character from the show.
00:07 - 00:07
Glee.
00:11 - 00:14
There's actually a pretty school cool story
00:14 - 00:16
behind the story that Rory flanagan has.
00:16 - 00:20
Damian McGinty was the co winner of season one of the Glee project,
00:20 - 00:25
which won him a short stint on the show Glee, which had to be at least seven episodes.
00:25 - 00:27
He appeared as the character Rory flanagan.
00:30 - 00:33
Rory flanagan was introduced as the exchange student that
00:33 - 00:36
Brittany Pierce and her family are hosting from Ireland.
00:36 - 00:39
To start off the jokes he originally appears in an episode called
00:39 - 00:42
pot of Gold and his very first song is called being green
00:51 - 00:54
marginalization is the act of placing a person or thing
00:54 - 00:58
in a position of lesser importance influence for power.
00:58 - 01:02
The main form of marginalization towards Rory's character is stereotyping,
01:02 - 01:06
but there are some instances of bullying throughout his episodes,
01:06 - 01:09
such as shown in the picture where he is being thrown up against the lockers
01:13 - 01:14
first.
01:14 - 01:17
The biggest original form of stereotyping is the fact
01:17 - 01:19
that Brittany thinks that Rory is a leprechaun.
01:19 - 01:21
She believes this because she believes that
01:21 - 01:23
anyone from Ireland must be a leprechaun.
01:24 - 01:26
This escalates into her asking for wishes and him
01:26 - 01:28
trying to grant them because he likes her.
01:29 - 01:33
One of her wishes is to have a bag full of lucky charms marshmallows
01:35 - 01:37
because he doesn't stop her.
01:37 - 01:40
She continues to believe in this leprechaun theory and he
01:40 - 01:43
eventually does give her a bag of lucky charms,
01:43 - 01:44
marshmallows.
01:49 - 01:52
Another form of stereotyping and bullying is through
01:52 - 01:54
the nicknames that are used towards Rory.
01:54 - 01:58
These include Ireland's potato eating poser, great kazoo kid
01:58 - 02:00
pet irish and leprechaun.
02:01 - 02:01
The
02:02 - 02:04
Kazoo kid reference is
02:04 - 02:08
a reference to a green character from the Flintstones called the Great Kazoo.
02:15 - 02:20
So is glee reinforcing the status quote or trying to make a point to the viewers.
02:21 - 02:22
In my opinion,
02:22 - 02:25
the show only aims to reinforce the status quo of
02:25 - 02:30
what people already thought about the irish culture in general.
02:30 - 02:34
It seems as though the production team saw a kid who won a competition
02:34 - 02:38
and the fact that it is very clear that he is irish when he speaks
02:38 - 02:43
and decided that they would make the longest running joke
02:43 - 02:45
that they could out of his stint on the show.
02:47 - 02:51
However, this is not the only time that they do this within the show.
02:51 - 02:53
For example, another character Tina,
02:53 - 02:57
who is Asian is constantly seen as being a quiet, reserved smart kid.
02:59 - 03:01
This was not something that was meant to
03:01 - 03:04
challenge the public's perception of irish people,
03:04 - 03:08
but to make a joke, there was no deeper meaning or
03:09 - 03:09
um
03:10 - 03:15
lesson that was meant to be taught because all that was seen throughout his entire
03:16 - 03:20
acting portion of the show was that he was a joke character.
03:24 - 03:26
What was the impact? Well
03:26 - 03:27
maybe it wasn't intentional,
03:27 - 03:30
but Rory's character does impact two different groups of people.
03:32 - 03:33
For me personally,
03:34 - 03:38
I was not impacted by the portrayal of his character because I chose not to,
03:38 - 03:39
I choose not to believe that your
03:39 - 03:42
ethnic background dictates your entire lifestyle.
03:43 - 03:46
I knew from the beginning of his character being in the show
03:46 - 03:49
that this was a joke and nothing more than a joke.
03:53 - 03:54
However,
03:56 - 03:58
for the public,
03:58 - 04:00
Glee turned an amazing singer with an extensive
04:00 - 04:03
career into that irish kid from Glee.
04:03 - 04:05
Well this wasn't an intentional effect.
04:05 - 04:08
It does cause a massive shift in the perception of Damian McGinty.
04:09 - 04:14
Lee has a different perspective when it comes to viewing the
04:14 - 04:17
actor who's playing the character because it is not animated.
04:17 - 04:18
Like some shows,
04:19 - 04:21
it is more likely that
04:21 - 04:22
the
04:24 - 04:30
Character from one show may follow that actor into other forms of media or art.
04:32 - 04:36
I did ask a few of my friends while compiling
04:37 - 04:40
my information for this project. If they knew who Damian McGinty was
04:41 - 04:42
and they would say no.
04:42 - 04:45
So I would show them a picture of him and even if
04:45 - 04:47
it wasn't a picture that had anything to do with the show,
04:47 - 04:48
Glee,
04:48 - 04:51
people would immediately say, oh, it's the irish kid from Glee.
04:52 - 04:55
They didn't know anything about his extensive background with
04:55 - 04:58
Celtic Thunder or his solo career after the show.
05:01 - 05:01
Mm hmm.
05:03 - 05:06
But you know, why does this matter? Well,
05:06 - 05:13
the outrage appears in different places. Depending on where you want to view
05:14 - 05:15
on a smaller scope.
05:15 - 05:17
A production team managed to discredit an entire
05:17 - 05:20
career because of a massively overused joke.
05:21 - 05:23
However, on a more broad topic,
05:23 - 05:25
the show helped to set a precedent in modern
05:25 - 05:27
media that making fun of irish people is okay,
05:27 - 05:28
as long as the joke is funny.
05:29 - 05:32
Well, this may not cause a massive political issue,
05:32 - 05:36
like some other stereotypes do in different forms of media.
05:37 - 05:43
It doesn't make it okay or write these jokes in this perception of Rory flanagan as a
05:43 - 05:46
character still cause a bias that is seen towards
05:46 - 05:48
irish irish culture and other forms of media.
05:49 - 05:53
While this wasn't the first show to do it, and it won't be the last. It
05:53 - 05:54
did help
05:55 - 05:57
teach a new generation of people
05:57 - 06:00
that it is completely okay to make these jokes,
06:01 - 06:03
but we have to make sure that they're funny.
