  1. Hi, I'm here to explain the effects of light pollution
  2. on the human body and what exactly we can do
  3. about it.
  4. So first when you understand what the circadian rhythm is.
  5. So the circadian rhythm is our 24 hour biological clock
  6. and this has our heart rate fluctuate throughout the day
  7. as you can see by the top graph.
  8. And it will also tell us when exactly to sleep
  9. and went exactly to wake up.
  10. And just one last thing though with light our body
  11. will naturally wake up because of the circadian rhythm.
  12. Um Yeah, so we can already kind of see what
  13. light pollution would do to us and it would obviously
  14. be bad.
  15. But how exactly does like wake us up?
  16. Well this is where we go here.
  17. So with it being dark our brain won't start to
  18. release melatonin which will is a chemical that will help
  19. us um sleep.
  20. So with light, melatonin is delayed from releasing.
  21. So if you were to try to pull an all
  22. nighter with all the lights on it's easier to stay
  23. up. You might feel a bit groggy but overall you'll
  24. be able to better than if you had all the
  25. lights very dim because melatonin will be released.
  26. And that's a really good thing because if you were
  27. to allow your sleep debt to accumulate it could have
  28. some really bad negative effects on your body.
  29. For example, weight gain.
  30. Um And memory would overall be much harder to develop.
  31. You won't be able to remember things quite as easily
  32. from the day before.
  33. So here's an example or a visual aid of how
  34. exactly militant is released as you can see again as
  35. light is detected, Melatonin is delayed from releasing and as
  36. no light is detected, melatonin is released.
  37. So we can already tell their light pollution is definitely
  38. bad for us because we don't want to forget things
  39. from the previous day.
  40. We don't want to gain weight just because we're not
  41. sleeping enough.
  42. So what can we exactly do about this?
  43. Well we can first start by putting covers on the
  44. street lamps so as you can see by the best
  45. option in this picture, all the light will be directed
  46. downwards and it won't easily reach our bedroom windows so
  47. we can not since the lion will be much easier.
  48. So the pedestrians will still feel safe and be able
  49. to see while we can still at least sleep while
  50. we're inside.
  51. So another thing we could do it switch from cool
  52. light to warm light so the cool light is much
  53. more bright and white as you can tell by the
  54. middle picture.
  55. Meanwhile, warm light, it's at least softer and it's much
  56. easier to adjust to.
  57. So switching from cool lights to warm lights is actually
  58. a lot more helpful because your brain will at least
  59. be able to sense that it's a little bit more
  60. dim and it's an easier transition from warm light to
  61. know light than from cool light to know like and
  62. it's a much easier transition that way and lastly, we
  63. could start um and force start enforcing a light curfew
  64. in which storefronts and office buildings will turn off all
  65. unnecessary lights.
  66. For example, this MetroPCS, I don't think all those lights
  67. are necessary, maybe just the MetroPCS sign and that way
  68. you can know what story is, but I don't think
  69. you need lights in every single window and that's definitely
  70. unnecessary so we can have a like curfew for them
  71. to start turning this off and it'll overall help us
  72. be able to get a better sleep.
  73. So that's all.
  74. And I hope you enjoyed.
  75. Thank you.
