00:01 - 00:04
Hi, I'm Anna Williams and I'm gonna talk about
00:04 - 00:07
the memoir that I wrote at the beginning of the semester.
00:07 - 00:10
I didn't actually finish the final draft until
00:11 - 00:16
tonight because, um, I've been going through a lot this whole semester
00:17 - 00:19
and I talked about that a little bit in my letter
00:19 - 00:23
to myself when I revisited the idea of my memoir.
00:24 - 00:25
Um,
00:25 - 00:25
so
00:26 - 00:27
what I wrote about in the beginning was
00:27 - 00:32
the insecurities that I developed as an adolescent
00:32 - 00:36
over the status that I didn't obtain
00:36 - 00:38
that compared to all of my friends.
00:38 - 00:44
It was really sad being a preteen, worried more about, you know,
00:44 - 00:48
clothes and shoes and not going on trips
00:48 - 00:52
versus making slime. Like all the rest of my friends did.
00:52 - 00:58
It was also sad to have to put on this mask every day. Like I was having fun, carefree
00:58 - 01:02
to avoid, you know, breaking my family's heart
01:02 - 01:03
and telling them that I was
01:04 - 01:07
super insecure about, you know, us
01:07 - 01:14
being middle class, which is so absurd now to go back and think about that.
01:14 - 01:15
Um,
01:15 - 01:17
that's important to me because
01:17 - 01:23
through this year, I went through a really hard breakup and it was with somebody that
01:23 - 01:28
I genuinely saw myself being with forever.
01:28 - 01:29
Um,
01:29 - 01:35
and that sounds a little asinine as a, you know, 19 year old. But
01:36 - 01:38
in my perspective, I,
01:38 - 01:42
I genuinely cared about this person more than I cared about myself.
01:42 - 01:45
I let go of that relationship to try and, you know,
01:45 - 01:49
grow as an individual, which I think that I did
01:49 - 01:53
and I think that was just, that was the strongest decision for me at the time.
01:53 - 01:58
But now I'm going back or recently, I've been going back and revisiting
01:58 - 02:01
the memories that we shared.
02:02 - 02:04
And it's, it's made me, you know,
02:05 - 02:06
start to
02:06 - 02:08
have the same thoughts
02:09 - 02:10
about myself that I did
02:11 - 02:14
in middle school. And it's so sad to, you know,
02:15 - 02:16
really,
02:17 - 02:18
I guess, hold on,
02:20 - 02:20
sorry.
02:21 - 02:25
It's a little bit embarrassing for me to,
02:25 - 02:27
from a bird's eye view.
02:27 - 02:28
Look at
02:28 - 02:33
a college freshman and a middle schooler as
02:33 - 02:37
having the same perspective about themselves.
02:37 - 02:39
You know, every time
02:39 - 02:41
you're going through something hard,
02:41 - 02:42
I guess
02:43 - 02:48
because I was able to meet Jesus at the foot of the cross and start
02:49 - 02:55
accepting his words about me being beautifully and wonderfully made no matter what
02:56 - 02:57
and not being a
02:57 - 03:03
wretched and malicious person for not knowing who I was.
03:03 - 03:09
And instead of devoting myself to someone else trying to figure out who I even am
03:09 - 03:11
instead of finding my identity in them,
03:12 - 03:12
um,
03:14 - 03:17
that is what has made me adamant about,
03:18 - 03:23
you know, turning my insecurities around and pushing them
03:23 - 03:26
to make me go farther
03:26 - 03:29
in life than the snobby girls that,
03:29 - 03:29
you know,
03:29 - 03:33
might not ever understand what self worth is because all they've ever
03:33 - 03:38
done is sat around and been fed with a golden spoon.
03:38 - 03:40
Um, and I don't wanna be hateful, but,
03:41 - 03:41
you know,
03:42 - 03:43
I'm glad that
03:43 - 03:48
I went through hardships similar to what I went through
03:48 - 03:51
in middle school and ones that have been way harder,
03:51 - 03:53
ridiculously harder.
03:53 - 03:54
But, um,
03:54 - 04:01
was able to look at the scenario as a whole and say I would rather use this
04:01 - 04:10
and reflect on who I can be versus sit and look in the mirror and hate my reflection
04:11 - 04:12
because I'm going through something hard
04:13 - 04:13
and then,
04:14 - 04:17
you know, distract myself again so that I don't have to deal with it.
04:17 - 04:21
Then in 40 years go through something hard again and
04:21 - 04:23
go back to the mindset of a middle schooler.
04:23 - 04:29
I look at the whole idea of this memoir as really beneficial for me at least
04:29 - 04:31
because,
04:31 - 04:32
um
04:32 - 04:34
I look back at what I wrote
04:34 - 04:35
uh a few months ago
04:36 - 04:37
and
04:37 - 04:41
was able to relate to the thoughts that I wrote about
04:41 - 04:43
as a
04:43 - 04:44
college freshman.
04:45 - 04:46
Um
04:47 - 04:48
The whole idea
04:48 - 04:52
was to turn everything that I've been through
04:52 - 04:54
and everything that I'm still going through and everything
04:54 - 04:57
that I'm going to go through back to,
04:57 - 04:58
um
04:59 - 05:03
how that will make me a better person in the future. Thank you.
