  1. Hi. Today we're going to talk about
  2. a beautiful mind, the movie.
  3. We're going to analyze it and talk about a lot of things in the movie
  4. and we're gonna discuss about it.
  5. So we have five topics which I'm gonna show you today.
  6. We're gonna get into the movie. You know, what is this beautiful mind about
  7. the plot?
  8. Obviously a scene from the movie, we're gonna analyze it, the shots,
  9. you know what is going on in this part of the movie.
  10. And then we're gonna talk about camera shots in the movie.
  11. And lastly, we are going to talk about the lighting and the color.
  12. So
  13. without further ado, let's get started.
  14. So our first you know,
  15. topic is,
  16. you know, what is this movie about? What is beautiful mind?
  17. A beautiful Mind is a true life story. This actually happened
  18. is a true life story of the mathematician
  19. John Nash. He won a Nobel Prize Award in
  20. 1994 but he really came out with his
  21. theories and the most known game theory really back
  22. in the day like decades ago before he won the award because of his own mental illness,
  23. which you don't know, he has schizophrenia.
  24. He couldn't really make a big, you know, success on his own career.
  25. But later on in his elderly life, he
  26. kind of moved forward and won the prize.
  27. But yeah, that's really it.
  28. And the movie is structured by Ron Howard and was authored by Akiva Goldsman.
  29. So
  30. is the one who plays John Nash. If you didn't see in the photo right there,
  31. he plays it and he played it very, very well with other characters like uh you know,
  32. Alicia Lord, who is played by
  33. Jennifer Connelly and Harris by Charles,
  34. which we're gonna come on to these characters.
  35. And Paul Bethany,
  36. a beautiful mind came out of the United States in
  37. 21st of December 2001 almost like 22 years ago.
  38. But it made a really big success. 313 million
  39. is a really much ink,
  40. a lot of money for these kind of movies because
  41. normally real life stories are not that much gross movies.
  42. So it must have been a big success.
  43. So we are moving on to our other topic, which is the plot.
  44. So
  45. yeah, the plot is really
  46. much
  47. a lot,
  48. but I'm going to say it as little as I can
  49. and gonna finish in a really little amount of time.
  50. But, you know, I wish that you guys could watch it rather than me telling it because
  51. it's a more watchable because when I explain, it's not gonna be really much
  52. saying anything but the movie does really has a lot of effect.
  53. So basically
  54. John Nash comes to Printon University as a co
  55. recipient for the car
  56. scholarship of mathematics.
  57. He is going to
  58. write an article about a thesis or a statement about, you know, a rule in math.
  59. He wants to come with an original idea
  60. and comes with other mathematicians who is very,
  61. very,
  62. you know, rival towards him, especially Hansen,
  63. which is a character that we're gonna see.
  64. You know, throughout the movie, he is very,
  65. very charming and wants to win this and kind of sees John as, you know, someone,
  66. you know, he could beat really easily
  67. and they all and they have a scene where they play chess and when Nash, you know,
  68. was trying to win, he can't,
  69. he just goes away and Hansen is kind of this bully,
  70. but later on is very helping towards him
  71. uh John.
  72. So he comes with an idea, he's trying to think of something original,
  73. but you know,
  74. you can't find something out of nowhere and people are telling him to just like,
  75. you know, you're the one of the last ones to do this.
  76. So you need to start your thesis right now.
  77. And
  78. he goes to a bar with his friends and they're talking about how to approach a woman.
  79. And it comes when they're trying to like talk about it.
  80. He discovers game theory if you don't know,
  81. just search game theory. It's very, very popular theory. He comes on to say
  82. that, you know,
  83. he argues with his friends on you can't approach the
  84. woman like this because all of us think that,
  85. you know, we can't get the beautiful one.
  86. So we're gonna go to the ones that we think is OK for us because
  87. we see each other as not as great of a level for the beautiful woman.
  88. So
  89. all of us are gonna go to a different type of woman
  90. and beautiful blonde woman is going to be in the middle.
  91. So the one who didn't went to any other woman
  92. is going to be with the blonde woman because the blonde
  93. woman is all alone and doesn't have any other option.
  94. And he discovers then the game theory and decides
  95. to write his statement and article on it.
  96. He publishes the article
  97. and
  98. it's a big success. He gets an invitation to M I T
  99. and starts working there and also gets invited
  100. to Pentagon for Telecommunication and studies to telecommunication.
  101. His life is going great and well he meets Alicia,
  102. his wife.
  103. He was, she's actually a student of his in M I T.
  104. But Alicia comes up to him saying that, you know,
  105. let's go on a date and they have a really great night
  106. and they eventually get married. But at this timeline,
  107. Nash's mental health gets really worse. In the beginning of the movie.
  108. He meets someone in college called Charles and Charles has a niece called Marcy.
  109. Mary Marcy.
  110. It's up to you
  111. but they talk, they get along very well and Josh is John's only friend
  112. in the whole entire person.
  113. University was he was trying to find an article and write an
  114. article was only Charles and he gets along with Charles very well.
  115. And after even like starting to teach in
  116. M I T and do these telecommunication studies,
  117. he still has con connection,
  118. connection with Charles. So sorry.
  119. Uh while this is happening, all these things happening in his life,
  120. such a great time,
  121. he meets someone called,
  122. he meets Parcher.
  123. Parcher works for the Cold War,
  124. the Civil War that was coming happening at the time because
  125. he lived in those times and was teaching at those times.
  126. So he needs him
  127. saying that he has a very secret job and
  128. is trying to find these codes of the Soviet Union
  129. that has been getting sent to USA.
  130. So he tries to work on these, but it's a secret mission.
  131. So he can't tell his wife, he can't tell his friends and he can't tell anyone.
  132. He has hasn't even talked about Charles to this.
  133. So he does this alone. But at that time, he gets a very a lot of fear. He marries Alicia
  134. but is so scare for his
  135. and her life about, you know that he's gonna get killed by the Soviet Union
  136. and something is going bad happen and he
  137. gets all terrified and petrified at some point,
  138. you know, secret things happen between himself and Alicia is just, you know,
  139. trying to understand what's going on because she's actually really much confused.
  140. And one day he gets really, really mad
  141. and,
  142. you know,
  143. Alicia goes through his studies in M I T
  144. and realizes that his husband has schizophrenia
  145. and that, you know,
  146. Charles
  147. Marcy
  148. departure, they're all just his hallucinations and his visions.
  149. So,
  150. you know,
  151. she gets very, very scared. She doesn't know what to do because she is pregnant
  152. from this man and she's completely confused on what's gonna happen.
  153. He goes,
  154. John goes immediately sane insane
  155. and gets to his psych ward.
  156. They meet a doctor there and he says that he needs to get very heavy medication
  157. and he does, he comes to home and Alicia takes care of him, but
  158. he stops taking this medication after some while and still goes on his missions.
  159. He starts to see parts of Charles and Mary
  160. again.
  161. And at some time,
  162. Alicia realizes what's going on
  163. and
  164. one day
  165. John leaves his child on a bathtub
  166. with Charles, but Charles is not there, Charles is just hall hallucination.
  167. So Alicia comes up running
  168. and realizes that he was almost killing their
  169. baby. So from this,
  170. he just she just yells at him saying, what are you doing? Charles is not here?
  171. He's not real.
  172. He's trying,
  173. she's trying to show him what's going on but he's still hesitant to not believe it.
  174. Parter comes up saying, what are you doing?
  175. You're insane and all that stuff and starts
  176. literally just coming up to his face screaming at him
  177. and he's trying to fight Parter at that point,
  178. but Parter is not there
  179. and accidentally trying to save Alicia and the baby, he
  180. just a little scores
  181. them over
  182. and they fell. So he hurts his wife and his head.
  183. And when Alicia realizes that there's no point of helping
  184. Nash, he just leaves her,
  185. she just leaves him
  186. and you know, while she's going with her car, you know, ready to just leave him.
  187. John realizes what's going on.
  188. He thinks about Marcy, the niece of Charles,
  189. he thinks about her going nonstop because
  190. he has been working at M I T and this
  191. job of this mission, the secret mission for years now
  192. years.
  193. And Marley has never grown once.
  194. And that's the to turning point of
  195. Nash's visions and his realization of that
  196. none of this, none of this is real.
  197. So he, you know, stops the car says to Alicia,
  198. I know what's going on.
  199. The girl is not growing up, what is going on. This is not real. None of this is real.
  200. So he starts to get medication.
  201. He goes back to Princeton and what you see Holson is there
  202. and he's actually is in the head of the ma mathematics part.
  203. And
  204. Alicia asked him to study in the library in Princeton and he agrees.
  205. But for some, a lot of reasons, uh years
  206. and decades probably he tries to get away from his
  207. visions and tried to beat them off and even goes to
  208. and fight in the middle of Princeton with a lot of students there,
  209. you know, fighting with Parcher, but Parcher is not there.
  210. So people think he's going crazy. But after years he gets over it
  211. one day he starts to teach students at the libraries, showing them what is going on,
  212. what is happening.
  213. And he is allowed to teach again. And in 94
  214. a Nobel Prize award, he wins,
  215. he wins it. He becomes a teacher in Princeton.
  216. He has a child, his child is growing up.
  217. He's at Harvard, you know, he's living his life and
  218. he,
  219. when his speech comes up, he dedicates everything to Alicia because
  220. she was always with him and supported him and that's how the movie finishes.
  221. So this is the plot.
  222. But I know I'm speaking right now here,
  223. but I think you should watch the movie even though I told everything.
  224. So we are gonna go on.
  225. So
  226. Charles Mary
  227. and Marcy and Parter. Parter is
  228. the guy with a cap. He has a hat. Charles is
  229. the one holding Marcy's hand and Marcy is a little girl,
  230. this is where,
  231. you know,
  232. Nash abandons them after realizing what's going on
  233. and they just stare at him from far
  234. and this is Alicia Nash on the date night.
  235. Now we have a scene from the movie.
  236. I'm very sorry to say this, but I can't show you the movie for some reason
  237. out of copyright. It's not letting me
  238. mega watch. I'm so sorry,
  239. but I can give you the URL but
  240. you know, you can watch yourself.
  241. So now we are going to, you know, do an analyze
  242. on it, you know what's going on.
  243. So the scene analyzes the scene we watch included three types,
  244. medium close up and deok
  245. shots.
  246. This scene is a very,
  247. very dark scene and it is a turning point for
  248. Nash on his hallucinations on his schizophrenia and realizes that,
  249. you know what he's seeing is not real.
  250. So there are very dark colored shots here,
  251. there's a very deep focus towards him
  252. of him trying to understand his feelings and what is going on.
  253. So what they're trying to point to the viewer is that, you know, you have to look at
  254. Nash's crow's eyes to understand what's going on to look
  255. at his face deeply that he's horrified of what he's realizing
  256. and also medium shots, you know,
  257. Alicia and the fight he has and there's an entire
  258. angle a little when he pushes Alicia and the baby,
  259. which shows that, you know, he's actually getting out of his mind and literally,
  260. you know, does anything for these hallucinate hallucinations that he's seeing.
  261. So,
  262. and
  263. we're gonna look at the plot for a little bit of what's going on here.
  264. A turning point for Nash.
  265. The scene that we just watched represents a
  266. turning point in the realization of Nash's illness
  267. as we talked about it. He realizes in this scene
  268. that Marci Marcy never grown up, she never grown up. It has been years,
  269. she hasn't grown
  270. one bit. Charles never changed. And parture is the same part.
  271. So he comes to realize that, you know, none of it is real
  272. and that Alicia and everyone who was very worried about him were right all along.
  273. So now we're gonna go and move on and to our shots,
  274. camera shots in the movie,
  275. there is high, low and
  276. high and low angle and medium shots,
  277. medium shots are mostly used on Nash to show his mean to show how he feels and how,
  278. you know, tense he gets when things go bad
  279. as we see on the scene just that we've watched,
  280. you know, you can see how tense he feels and how bad he feels and what's going on.
  281. But throughout the movie, he also feels, you know,
  282. a little bit more
  283. weird
  284. and we tend to see how he feels. So the medium angle
  285. is mostly for, you know, to see how he feels or the other characters and how they feel
  286. high and low angle. So I'm just gonna show it
  287. high angle, low angle is used to show hope
  288. we have one scene
  289. that I can't show right now.
  290. But
  291. in the slow angle.
  292. One of the scenes that, you know, it has a very,
  293. very powerful low angle shot
  294. is where he fights with
  295. Parer and looks up, you know, to the camera,
  296. not for the camera but like the shot where he looks up and sees, you know,
  297. other people staring at him and laughing at him
  298. and
  299. you know, trying to fight that vision, he's trying to fight and what's going on.
  300. He's trying to, you know,
  301. fight it through his visions of parts and everything that's going on.
  302. He's trying to fight it. He's looking up for hope.
  303. You know, that's what he's trying to show.
  304. If you watch a movie, you'll see it.
  305. But
  306. I'm just explaining right now.
  307. The
  308. high angle shots
  309. are used to give the show scene, show freedom.
  310. I'm gonna show you the shot right now
  311. of the picture I put inside on this flight.
  312. But basically on that scene that I just show you the shot of
  313. is basically to show on, you know,
  314. what is going on?
  315. It shows freedom
  316. and what kind of freedoms shall we? So Charles and
  317. Nash are in the room,
  318. Nash is so hung up on
  319. what he's trying to find his thesis and what's he's
  320. what he's gonna do because he needs a scholarship.
  321. Charles is trying to say to just, you know, relax a little bit and all of a sudden,
  322. you know, he starts to scream saying it's like, ok, ok,
  323. like he's trying to boost Nash.
  324. And at some point they push together his,
  325. his desk and it goes off to window
  326. and
  327. the desk is completely ruined and they start to laugh and look at it from high up.
  328. So it's a freedom showing that, you know,
  329. Josh, Josh, I'm so sorry John is trying to show
  330. on why he's doing this and how tense he is and throw the desk,
  331. looking at him is showing the freedom that is going on.
  332. He they're trying to replicate how, you know, by throwing a desk,
  333. he's throwing all his
  334. work and all his, you know, things that he'd done that.
  335. No sense of right now doing is gonna make him good about it.
  336. So yeah, if I can show you right now, I will show you
  337. the picture. Yeah, they're now looking at it and also
  338. Nash hit his head and is bleeding but they're looking at it like, you know,
  339. they just got their feed out of it.
  340. We're gonna go to lightning lighting and color.
  341. So the lighting and color are very, very
  342. different here
  343. and there's a lot of switched up switch ups on color.
  344. What am I exactly talking about?
  345. The colors are very much a golden hour
  346. integration a little bit bluish throughout the movie
  347. in the beginning. There's a hope for
  348. uh Nash and he tries to show people that he go, he's gonna win it.
  349. So there is a really great vibe and a very great scenery
  350. throughout the film.
  351. It goes a little bit blue and gray because
  352. of its schizophrenia and the hallucinations that he's seeing,
  353. it's not going great. It's going bad.
  354. It's going really, really bad,
  355. especially the scene that we watched just before shows on how, you know
  356. how he's going a little bit more tender and everything is starting to go bad.
  357. Like there's a scene where he's a psych ward
  358. and it's just all blue, all gray
  359. and it's a little bit more darker, the lightning too.
  360. But on a date night with Alicia, it's such a yellow scene.
  361. It's yellow, it's gives golden hour in the face.
  362. It just shows how happy it is and how the scene is supposed to be a good scene.
  363. These lightnings lightings tend to show
  364. how we should feel as
  365. the person who is watching it,
  366. you know, is it good or bad?
  367. And we, you know,
  368. the lighting is not really much a big thing on the movie because of the coloring.
  369. It just kind of goes into the background,
  370. but mostly it's a normal lightning lighting,
  371. but throughout where it goes to bluish and grayish,
  372. the lighting goes a little bit more darker.
  373. It kind of gives this melancholic lighting
  374. and I'm gonna show you now
  375. the examples,
  376. this scene in particular has a very, very yellow
  377. lighting. This shows where he finds the thesis, his discovery of the game theory.
  378. That's a blonde woman that I was talking about in the beginning
  379. where this is how he finds it.
  380. And it's a bar. It's a really relaxing. It's a very happy moment.
  381. And when the scene actually gets into an end,
  382. we can see that John finding his finally the statement,
  383. he just goes into a big amount of happiness.
  384. And now
  385. the other scene
  386. where he's looking
  387. through his window
  388. also, he's kind of hopeless towards it,
  389. but it also has some hope on what's gonna go on.
  390. He's trying to find something but it sure that he's gonna find about it. So
  391. it's in the middle.
  392. Now we have the
  393. one where
  394. it's grayish and bluish,
  395. it just, you know,
  396. shows that,
  397. you know,
  398. it's bad. This is where everything is not real
  399. is, you know,
  400. Soviet mission is not real. He's making up things in his mind
  401. and they're really not real. They're not true. And
  402. she finds out because this was secret and her, her finding out is a really,
  403. really bad point for John
  404. and this scene just shows particular that it's not gonna be good.
  405. The ending of it is not gonna be good
  406. because this is where his mission stops and because he doesn't know what's going on,
  407. it's a really quite bad.
  408. See,
  409. so, you know,
  410. because see like us who watches it does not know
  411. what's going on because we don't know if it's schizophrenic,
  412. it's actual or real or not.
  413. Because the first time I watched it, I did not know specifically what was going on.
  414. But Alicia knowing made me feel tense, made me feel bad because why
  415. he should, she shouldn't have done that.
  416. So
  417. this scene where gray blue parts come up tries to show that, you know,
  418. this is not gonna have a good ending
  419. and this is really bad for the main character's plot
  420. or the main plot of the movie.
  421. And it's really what tends to show
  422. and
  423. that was basically it.
  424. We discussed everything about it. We discussed, uh, all of the things that I listed
  425. throughout these topics. Thank you for listening and watching.
  426. I hope I gave you a lot of information about the movie.
  427. If you haven't watched it, please watch it. It's a very brill brilliant movie
  428. and
  429. yeah, you know, have fun watching it.
  430. So.
  431. Bye.
