  1. Hi, I'm Cameron Thurman.
  2. Currently, I'm an intern for the Shelton Leadership Center.
  3. On behalf of the centre, I'm here to present to
  4. you useful information that will help you during your development
  5. as an individual and leader.
  6. Today, I will be discussing what a benefit mindset is
  7. and how it can be valuable for you to learn.
  8. As a developing leader, I will also be going over
  9. the active citizenship continuum and how useful it is to
  10. be self aware of your role in a community along
  11. with its relation to benefit mindset.
  12. In order to fully understand what a benefit mindset is,
  13. you must also understand the two other key minds at
  14. frameworks. First, I will go over what a fixed mindset
  15. is with having a fixed mindset.
  16. You may be more resistant to change within yourself and
  17. your reasoning behind why is you're either born with the
  18. skill or talent versus being able to develop a skill
  19. or talent over time.
  20. People with this mindset typically believe that skills and intelligence
  21. are set.
  22. You either have them or you don't let us look
  23. at a real life scenario that will help you better
  24. understand fixed mindset.
  25. John's teacher passes back graded exams to the class.
  26. Jon sees that he received a B plus and smiles.
  27. Another student leans over and asked John how you did
  28. so well.
  29. And if he had any study tips to offer, John
  30. replies, I didn't even study.
  31. I've just always been good at math.
  32. It's not really something you can work at.
  33. With this scenario, it is clear that John has a
  34. fixed mindset.
  35. John believes the reason why he got a good grade
  36. on his exam is because he is naturally good at
  37. math rather than him working towards being better at math
  38. before the exam.
  39. More examples of fixed mindset characteristics include avoiding challenges, believing
  40. failure, defines them and ignoring constructive feedback from others.
  41. Next, we will look at growth mindset.
  42. A person with growth mindset recognizes that skills and talents
  43. can be developed with the experience.
  44. For instance, are person with gross minds.
  45. It believes that mistakes are part of learning, they encourage
  46. feedback and they spend a lot of time focusing on
  47. what can be improved to give you a riel world
  48. perspective. Here is a scenario that exemplifies growth mindset.
  49. Jenny has always placed last at her track needs.
  50. Instead of quitting the team, Jenny has decided to work
  51. every day to improve her times.
  52. She believes that there is always room for improvement in
  53. that hard work and determination can pay off, building off
  54. growth minds that next we have benefit mindset.
  55. People who have a benefit mindset, not Onley, seek to
  56. fulfill their potential but choose to do so in a
  57. way that contributes to the well being of society as
  58. a whole.
  59. With this mindset, people focus on the lifelong learning to
  60. develop their own skills that can later be contributed toe
  61. larger communities.
  62. Someone who exhibits a benefit mindset was used.
  63. Their confidence and skills from growth mindset honor their personal
  64. growth and focus on the why of what they do.
  65. Once again, they share a really life point of view.
  66. Here is an example of a person exhibiting benefit mindset.
  67. Every weekend, Tory volunteers at the soup kitchen.
  68. The purpose behind Tory dedicating her time to the soup
  69. kitchen, is not self serving.
  70. She volunteers her time to help those in need.
  71. Tory has a true believes that putting other spurs will
  72. help to build up her larger community.
  73. She is constantly looking for ways to grow and serve
  74. others. Now that we have looked at each mindset framework,
  75. we can reflect on how they build upon each other.
  76. When someone has a fixed mindset there solely focused on
  77. the outcome or product growth, mindset is fixated on the
  78. process or progress that is may.
  79. While benefit mindset is fueled by passion and the purpose
  80. of advancing oneself as well as the larger community, it
  81. may appear that you can only have one mindset during
  82. one period of your life or that one mindset is
  83. better than the other.
  84. However, each mindset can be implemented during several situations in
  85. one life.
  86. It's just a matter of recognizing where you are in
  87. your life and how you are affecting your personal life
  88. and community on a greater scale.
  89. Now we're going to be able to identify the relationship
  90. between having a benefit mindset and active citizenship.
  91. As I stated before, when having a benefit mindset, you
  92. focus on transition in your self interest and personal growth
  93. to a larger community.
  94. By having this mindset, you can develop into becoming an
  95. active citizen.
  96. An active citizen is a person who prioritises their communities
  97. within their values and like choice to better understand active
  98. citizenship and to develop into an active citizen.
  99. A continuum has been created to make no of your
  100. specific role in your community as of right now, first
  101. in line, there is a member of a community a
  102. member is not concerned with or may not be aware
  103. of the societal issues in their communities.
  104. Those who are members don't spend time involving themselves in
  105. community service for awareness activities.
  106. In order to move on from being a member and
  107. into becoming a volunteer, one must take on active roles
  108. in volunteering.
  109. A volunteer is a person dedicated to service opportunities but
  110. has not explored or experienced.
  111. Wine. Issue may be in existence.
  112. Volunteers have good intentions.
  113. However, they lack the consciousness off why societal issues occur
  114. in the first place.
  115. Learning why the need of volunteer work exists Weeds into
  116. becoming a conscientious citizen.
  117. A conscientious citizen is a volunteer who has begun researching
  118. societal issues and works towards making others aware of current
  119. social issues.
  120. In order to move on to the final placement of
  121. the continuum, the active citizen, one must take their efforts
  122. towards understanding, but needs of volunteer work and relating it
  123. to the community as a whole.
  124. An active citizen makes efforts towards volunteering, identifies them as
  125. a part of a community and spends time engaging others
  126. in their passions.
  127. In order to become an active citizen, a person must
  128. take on having a benefit mindset with having a benefit
  129. mindset. Ah, person will be able to recognize their strengths
  130. and weaknesses to better themselves and the community surrounding them.
  131. Active citizenship involves dedicating time to improve oneself and to
  132. teach one another about social issues in the community.
  133. In conclusion, I hope you are all now Teoh able
  134. to recognize where you stand in your community and utilize
  135. a growth or benefit mindset to move on through the
  136. active citizenship continuum.
  137. Finally, I would like to say thank you to the
  138. summer 2020 Shelton Leadership Center in turns for putting this
  139. presentation together.
