00:01 - 00:01
All right, guys.
00:02 - 00:02
Good morning.
00:02 - 00:05
We are on to chapter eight.
00:05 - 00:08
This'll chapter is all about options and responses.
00:09 - 00:11
So we've talked about how to be in the vehicle
00:11 - 00:12
paying attention.
00:13 - 00:15
But now we're gonna move outside the vehicle and potentially
00:16 - 00:18
what is going on around us?
00:20 - 00:20
All right.
00:21 - 00:24
So, like giving meaning determining options is a mental length
00:25 - 00:27
that involves thinking through the meaning that results from searching.
00:28 - 00:30
I know there's a lot of words right there, but
00:31 - 00:32
essentially, we're looking.
00:33 - 00:34
We're searching for clues.
00:35 - 00:38
A sign, a signal, other vehicles.
00:38 - 00:42
And now we put meaning to that the meaning you
00:42 - 00:44
give to a situation determines your options.
00:44 - 00:49
And ultimately, the response you choose after you weigh your
00:49 - 00:52
options go beyond what is actually happening in a traffic
00:52 - 00:56
situation and making informed guesses what might happen next?
00:57 - 00:58
So we're kind of going to go over that in
00:59 - 00:59
this section right here.
01:00 - 01:02
You can see your objectives right there to find options
01:02 - 01:04
and explain their role in driving process.
01:05 - 01:08
Described the role of assumptions in the driving process, explained
01:09 - 01:11
the importance of choices in the driving process.
01:12 - 01:15
So driving is a process is not being just something
01:15 - 01:19
you're lackadaisically doing as you in this as you see,
01:19 - 01:20
the yellow word come up.
01:21 - 01:22
You know, those are important terms.
01:23 - 01:27
Eso option comparison assumptions and choices are some things that
01:27 - 01:29
we're going to cover in this.
01:29 - 01:33
Uh, so we're gonna start with the roll off options.
01:34 - 01:38
So in the driving process, you want to know all
01:39 - 01:41
of your options in order to make the best and
01:41 - 01:42
safest choice possible.
01:43 - 01:46
Remember that you only have a moment or two to
01:46 - 01:50
do so your options depend on your situation.
01:52 - 01:55
For the fullest possible understanding of your options you're searching
01:55 - 01:56
Process must be complete.
01:57 - 01:59
Enact. So you gotta take in everything.
01:59 - 02:01
You can't just take in one thing you gotta look
02:01 - 02:02
all the way around.
02:03 - 02:06
If you have been realistic and given meaning to the
02:06 - 02:09
situation, the best option for the situation will be easy
02:10 - 02:11
to identify and select.
02:12 - 02:14
If what you give meaning to in the traffic situation
02:15 - 02:19
is not accurate or realistic, the best selection or best
02:19 - 02:22
option will be difficulty and you might make a driving
02:23 - 02:27
missed a QE eso You know, you think about somebody
02:27 - 02:30
who is paying full attention to a scenario going down
02:31 - 02:31
the road.
02:31 - 02:34
Uh, they're free from distractions, and all of a sudden
02:34 - 02:36
the vehicle in front of them slams on their brakes.
02:37 - 02:39
Well, if they've been paying attention, then they might know
02:40 - 02:43
My left is clear or there's plenty of shoulder over
02:43 - 02:45
here on the right so I can veer to the
02:45 - 02:48
right really quick to not hit the vehicle in front
02:48 - 02:48
of me.
02:49 - 02:50
Let's use the cell phone.
02:50 - 02:52
That's an easy one to use if somebody has been
02:52 - 02:53
not paying attention.
02:53 - 02:56
And at 55 miles an hour, we've traveled a football
02:57 - 03:01
field and it takes about that time, um, to read
03:02 - 03:02
a text.
03:02 - 03:02
Three seconds.
03:03 - 03:05
Okay, the shortest text, you know, we have to look
03:05 - 03:09
down. So from looking down, reading, looking back up a
03:09 - 03:13
football field, If we have not been taking in everything,
03:14 - 03:16
then our options are very limited to us.
03:16 - 03:18
And we react in a negative place where my slam
03:19 - 03:21
on the brakes veer over left and all of a
03:21 - 03:25
sudden, now we're going into oncoming traffic and to lead
03:25 - 03:27
us with that is, we have consequences.
03:28 - 03:30
So you will know about, or we'll have experienced certain
03:31 - 03:33
situations while driving or watching other drivers.
03:34 - 03:36
There are also certain actions you can take as a
03:37 - 03:43
driver. So what I'm constantly doing is constantly assessing the
03:43 - 03:47
situation. I wanna always be like, What's going on?
03:48 - 03:50
What? What am I What am I looking at?
03:50 - 03:51
How am I taking that in next?
03:53 - 03:54
You want to interpret it?
03:54 - 03:55
So what is my interpretation?
03:56 - 03:58
And I like this cartoon here because you could see
03:59 - 04:01
the person on our left to saying, Well, that's four
04:02 - 04:04
lines. But then the person on the right, there's no
04:04 - 04:08
three. So two people, two different vehicles, they're assessing the
04:09 - 04:10
same exact thing.
04:11 - 04:12
But they're interpreting it two different ways.
04:13 - 04:15
That that's what makes driving hard is not everybody is
04:15 - 04:17
going to see this everything the same way.
04:18 - 04:21
And then after you have assessed after you have interpreted,
04:22 - 04:24
you need to make your best decision.
04:24 - 04:26
Okay, we wanna be predictable.
04:27 - 04:30
Are we being protect herbal while we drive down the
04:30 - 04:34
road? Okay, so we talked about options.
04:35 - 04:40
So some things that we might, um, determined is an
04:40 - 04:43
option. Might be because somebody is slowing down or stopping
04:43 - 04:44
in front of me.
04:45 - 04:45
What are my options?
04:46 - 04:47
Hopefully you've been paying attention.
04:48 - 04:49
You've been giving yourself enough space.
04:49 - 04:52
Your option is to stop behind them and not have
04:52 - 04:54
to make an emergency maneuver.
04:56 - 04:56
All right, something else.
04:57 - 04:57
A light changing.
04:58 - 05:01
Okay, if I've been paying attention if I'm assessing the
05:01 - 05:08
situation. So I'm driving from McDonald's in Madison to sheeps.
05:09 - 05:14
That's a popular destinations, and I get through the intersection
05:15 - 05:17
of Fairground Road where it cuts across, and all of
05:17 - 05:20
a sudden I can see the light in front of
05:20 - 05:20
the high school.
05:22 - 05:25
If I've seen it green from the time I first
05:25 - 05:28
saw it all the way up to it, there's a
05:28 - 05:30
good chance I think it's gonna turn yellow and red.
05:31 - 05:34
Therefore, my thought is I better be prepared to stop
05:35 - 05:38
if I get past the ramp where main Street comes
05:39 - 05:41
down and I saw it just go from red to
05:41 - 05:44
green. There's a great chance that it's going to stay
05:45 - 05:47
green because it was not a stale green light.
05:47 - 05:50
So that's where I'm using my options, and I'm paying
05:50 - 05:51
attention and assessing.
05:53 - 05:56
All right, um, it's somebody in your blind spot.
05:57 - 06:00
So if I've been scanning and searching my mirrors while
06:01 - 06:03
I'm driving down the road and I know there's a
06:03 - 06:05
car coming up pretty fast from behind me, it was
06:06 - 06:09
you know, way back five seconds ago and all of
06:09 - 06:10
a sudden is pretty close to me.
06:11 - 06:14
I want to understand it might be back in my
06:14 - 06:14
blind spot.
06:15 - 06:17
So if I need to maneuver somewhere, really give a
06:17 - 06:20
good check over my shoulder into my blind spot.
06:20 - 06:23
Same thing if I'm maneuvering to my right, I need
06:24 - 06:26
to make sure I've been paying attention to what was
06:26 - 06:26
in my blind spot.
06:27 - 06:29
Um, let's go over.
06:29 - 06:31
What if I move in somebody else's blinds?
06:32 - 06:34
So let's say if I'm going to target and call
06:34 - 06:38
Pepper and I'm driving up 29 there's three ramps, uh,
06:38 - 06:41
that come on to 29 as we're driving.
06:42 - 06:45
So let's say you're the white car.
06:46 - 06:48
This car is in front of you, so I'm moving
06:49 - 06:50
into their blind spot.
06:51 - 06:54
So I'm not going to assume that they know I'm
06:54 - 06:58
there because maybe they weren't trained by awesome teacher like
06:58 - 07:00
this guy here on Dhe.
07:01 - 07:03
There's a car coming off the ramp.
07:04 - 07:07
Well, if I'm here, I need to say I need
07:07 - 07:08
to figure out very quickly.
07:10 - 07:12
Am I going to accelerate to make sure that they
07:12 - 07:14
see me because I'm now in front of them also
07:14 - 07:16
creating space behind me in case they need to get
07:16 - 07:20
over. Or do I want to maybe play it safe
07:21 - 07:25
and not speed up thinking that they may get over
07:25 - 07:26
to allow the other car to get out?
07:27 - 07:29
What I don't want to do is stick here in
07:29 - 07:33
their blind spot and not give them their best option.
07:33 - 07:36
My best option is to create the safest space for
07:36 - 07:37
vehicles around me.
07:38 - 07:40
Okay? And you have to determine that with your experience.
07:41 - 07:43
And if you've been following that vehicle, you might have
07:44 - 07:45
an understanding if they've been slowing up constantly.
07:46 - 07:48
Maybe going by them is the best.
07:48 - 07:52
But creating that space and then are there pedestrians?
07:53 - 07:56
So, you know, we want to predict that if I
07:56 - 07:59
have a green light, that sign across the road says
08:00 - 08:02
they should not be walking, but it's pedestrian crosswalk.
08:03 - 08:07
Some pedestrians might go anyway on dhe.
08:07 - 08:10
I'm going to assume nothing s o.
08:10 - 08:12
We need to just come up with what are our
08:12 - 08:14
options and compare what we could do.
08:16 - 08:19
So three questions we can always ask yourself on Dhe.
08:19 - 08:21
There's a couple things, couple shows.
08:21 - 08:24
I've really enjoyed the office, probably during my all time
08:25 - 08:26
favorite. So Jim Halpert here.
08:26 - 08:28
What is happening here?
08:28 - 08:29
I'm always Yeah.
08:30 - 08:30
Ask yourself that.
08:31 - 08:33
What is going on out of my windshield?
08:34 - 08:36
Out of my rear view mirror in this situation.
08:37 - 08:39
I met after you.
08:39 - 08:41
Ask yourself what is happening here.
08:41 - 08:44
Um, not my favorite show.
08:44 - 08:47
But if it what do I believe will happen next
08:49 - 08:54
and then after I do that, is anything bad gonna
08:54 - 08:58
happen, you know, is if I've taken in a assessed,
08:58 - 09:03
um is everything that potentially can happen a good thing
09:03 - 09:04
if it is, I do it.
09:05 - 09:06
If it's not, I need to prepare.
09:07 - 09:09
Do I wanna get Do I slow down?
09:09 - 09:10
Do I speed up?
09:10 - 09:10
Do I steer?
09:11 - 09:14
There's a There's different things that we can do but
09:14 - 09:16
we gotta be prepared for them always.
09:17 - 09:19
I felt that means yesterday I liked it.
09:23 - 09:24
Alright, so we went through options.
09:24 - 09:30
We went through the role of options and now we're
09:30 - 09:33
going todo into informed assumptions.
09:35 - 09:38
So we're gonna get to this picture here in a
09:38 - 09:38
little while.
09:39 - 09:42
But as a driver who looks ahead, you often must
09:42 - 09:45
make assumptions as what other vehicles do.
09:46 - 09:49
Assumptions are used when determining available options and making your
09:49 - 09:53
final choice of which option has the greatest potential to
09:53 - 09:54
make something good happen.
09:55 - 09:58
If you did not make assumptions, it would take longer
09:58 - 10:01
to come to conclusions or decisions while driving.
10:02 - 10:02
For instance.
10:05 - 10:09
Yeah, this is an extreme case, but most people who
10:10 - 10:15
were driving down that road right there are going to
10:15 - 10:17
assume there's a really sharp curve ahead.
10:18 - 10:22
Okay, on that speed limit that's on there is for
10:22 - 10:23
our safety.
10:23 - 10:28
So that would be our assumption.
10:31 - 10:35
Now, if you get, let me go back if you
10:35 - 10:36
get the other one.
10:36 - 10:40
So this this other one here is Is this situation
10:42 - 10:43
like something I've been in before?
10:43 - 10:46
So I have I been to that intersection right there.
10:46 - 10:47
Three way stop.
10:47 - 10:49
Do I know what most vehicles dio?
10:50 - 10:51
Is it somewhere I've never been before?
10:52 - 10:54
Um, what happened in the other situations?
10:55 - 10:59
Eso I'm just I'm gathering all this from experience, and
10:59 - 11:01
could the same thing happen again?
11:02 - 11:03
So it's a neighborhood.
11:04 - 11:07
I know that people roll through the stop, so I'm
11:07 - 11:12
going to give an extra second or I've been around
11:12 - 11:13
this and everybody's pretty cautious.
11:14 - 11:17
Everybody takes their time, so I know I can safely
11:17 - 11:18
maneuver through here.
11:18 - 11:20
So that's that's just using assumptions.
11:25 - 11:26
And then we need to make a choice.
11:27 - 11:30
Okay, so we've done all of this way, you know,
11:31 - 11:34
taking all that information then and then we're ready to
11:34 - 11:37
make a choice so we can do things before we
11:37 - 11:38
ever leave.
11:39 - 11:44
For instance, we can have our GPS ready.
11:44 - 11:47
We know when we leave this is where we're going.
11:48 - 11:50
We've looked at the map, so it's not just talking
11:51 - 11:54
to us because many times a ZX we get going
11:54 - 11:54
down the road.
11:55 - 11:56
Even with the GPS.
11:57 - 12:00
If there's a lot of congestion of traffic, it cause
12:01 - 12:01
a lot of anxiety.
12:02 - 12:03
So if I know exactly where I should be going,
12:04 - 12:07
how far it should be, it will make you feel
12:07 - 12:08
better about the choices.
12:11 - 12:15
Alright, Some other things that happened while we're driving is
12:16 - 12:19
my choice is to but on the brakes.
12:20 - 12:21
My choice is to accelerate.
12:21 - 12:25
My choice is to steer move over for other vehicles,
12:25 - 12:29
so driving choices must be made quickly in real time
12:29 - 12:31
and usually without anyone's help.
12:32 - 12:35
Okay, Eso you're gonna be driving a lot by yourself.
12:35 - 12:36
You have to make those decisions.
12:37 - 12:38
If there's other people in the vehicle.
12:38 - 12:42
They're relying on you to make the best decision possible
12:43 - 12:44
in any driving situation.
12:44 - 12:46
You choose from five basic options.
12:47 - 12:51
Steering, braking, accelerating signaling and a combination of all of
12:51 - 12:55
them. Sometimes you might be doing you might steer and
12:55 - 12:56
accelerate the same time.
12:56 - 12:59
Sometimes you might have to break and steer it the
12:59 - 12:59
same time.
13:00 - 13:02
You should not be accelerating and braking it.
13:02 - 13:06
Same. That combination should not be happening, but making good
13:06 - 13:10
choices allow you to successfully manage space, time and visibility
13:11 - 13:12
to drive safely.
13:13 - 13:16
I mean, I keep talking about guys space time, visibility.
13:17 - 13:19
If you could do those things, you're going to be
13:19 - 13:24
safe. All right, so that is options.
13:25 - 13:25
That's lesson one.
13:26 - 13:28
You'll have some questions to go along with those again.
13:28 - 13:31
If you ever need me, reach out by email, reach
13:31 - 13:32
out by messaging canvas.
13:32 - 13:35
Um, and I will answer those quickly in the camp
