00:00 - 00:04
wow. So I did get cut off in my um
00:05 - 00:09
previous videos, so I'm going to continue on here.
00:10 - 00:14
Um So I was talking about drugs and alcohol.
00:15 - 00:17
Um I was talking about alcohol.
00:19 - 00:21
Um and the general recommendations?
00:22 - 00:25
Um we just went over some of the products that
00:25 - 00:27
you made by two.
00:28 - 00:33
see if there is any alcohol in your infants or
00:33 - 00:37
your expressed milk, you're pumped milk, anything like that.
00:37 - 00:41
So now we can move on to psychiatric meds.
00:43 - 00:47
Um So unfortunately there are a lot of psychiatric medications
00:47 - 00:50
that mothers can be on or cannot be on for
00:50 - 00:50
that matter.
00:51 - 00:53
I'm sorry um mentions that cross the placenta.
00:54 - 00:56
Berrien can cause birth defects in babies are called terra
00:57 - 01:04
genic. Um Often moms taking these medications well pregnant need
01:04 - 01:07
to be released from them or are advised to not
01:08 - 01:09
take them during the pregnancy.
01:11 - 01:15
Yeah, some may resume after delivery of the baby and
01:15 - 01:17
may choose to actually not breastfeed to be able to
01:18 - 01:18
continue their medication.
01:20 - 01:23
Um In my research, there was a lot of evidence
01:23 - 01:29
that showed um that um resuming the psychiatric medication was
01:30 - 01:36
um very important, just almost just as important as um
01:36 - 01:38
feeding lactating your baby.
01:39 - 01:41
Um We always want to help me mama with a
01:42 - 01:42
healthy baby.
01:44 - 01:49
So um that's it for drugs and alcohol.
01:54 - 01:57
So now I'm going to talk about lactation and lactation
01:58 - 02:04
ideals. So, um lactation ideals are obviously things that would
02:04 - 02:11
be completely 100% idealistic, that is likely not um going
02:11 - 02:14
to happen for everybody, not all of these things will
02:14 - 02:16
happen. There are many lactation ideals.
02:17 - 02:23
Um The lactation ideals that I okay.
02:25 - 02:30
Mhm. That I um came across were that the baby
02:30 - 02:34
will expressively breastfeed for the first six months exclusively.
02:35 - 02:39
My bad um breastfeeding will continue until the infant reaches
02:39 - 02:40
one year.
02:40 - 02:43
Um So the caveat to that is that there are
02:43 - 02:47
many, many individuals who choose to breastfeed their child infant
02:48 - 02:51
toddler um For many years beyond the one year mark,
02:52 - 02:56
there has been little research that shows that there is
02:56 - 03:01
any nutrient value um be passed the one year mark.
03:01 - 03:09
Um The um more the reason that moms choose to
03:09 - 03:13
breastfeed past the one year mark is usually um for
03:14 - 03:18
comfort for the bonding experience that you get from lactation
03:20 - 03:21
that you get from breast feeding your child.
03:22 - 03:25
Um So another lactation ideal is that the infant will
03:25 - 03:28
maintain weight and grow accordingly to the standard infant growth
03:28 - 03:31
chart. So the standard in front growth chart is something
03:31 - 03:35
that is used in the pediatric offices or family practice
03:35 - 03:37
offices in the United States.
03:37 - 03:42
That's um this place is your child on a growth
03:43 - 03:49
line um out of um Children of the same age,
03:49 - 03:52
same height, same you know and places them in a
03:53 - 03:54
category of percentage.
03:56 - 03:59
Um Another lactation ideal is if the mom should need
04:00 - 04:03
to return to work um she would number one be
04:03 - 04:07
able to pump well at work or have the equipment
04:08 - 04:08
in space.
04:09 - 04:14
Um Number two, her supplement will her supplement her supply
04:15 - 04:18
will not decrease because of the separation from the infant
04:19 - 04:25
or the pumping schedule um while pumping the breast is
04:25 - 04:33
not fully um depleted of milk the way it is
04:33 - 04:38
when a baby nurses at the breast um Oftentimes um
04:38 - 04:41
like I said before you would need to hand express,
04:41 - 04:42
you would need to massage.
04:43 - 04:47
Um Sometimes it may be helpful to put ice on
04:47 - 04:48
your breasts.
04:48 - 04:52
Um It may be helpful to get the oxytocin release
04:53 - 04:59
and the that videos and pictures of the baby helps
04:59 - 04:59
do that.
05:00 - 05:03
And those are just some lactation ideals.
05:05 - 05:08
So can I come out?
05:09 - 05:13
I'm gonna, my references are vest there.
05:13 - 05:15
Um There are many references.
05:17 - 05:19
Two pictures mm.
05:23 - 05:26
So the big takeaways that I got from um this
05:26 - 05:33
project of researching and um discussing maternal nutrition and adaptation
05:34 - 05:36
was that not everybody is the same.
05:37 - 05:44
Um Every individual requires different, requires the same vitamins and
05:44 - 05:46
nutrients in different amounts.
05:46 - 05:51
So um one individual may require a higher caloric intake
05:51 - 05:52
um than another.
05:52 - 05:58
One individual may require a daily recommended value higher than
05:58 - 06:01
another. Um And these are all things that you should
06:01 - 06:02
discuss with your provider.
06:03 - 06:10
Um If um you had further questions lactation consultants um
06:10 - 06:14
is an entire specialty in nursing and thank you for
