00:01 - 00:04
It's truly astonishing how much waste we have here in
00:04 - 00:04
the United States.
00:05 - 00:07
I spent three years of my life living in Italy,
00:07 - 00:11
where I had five different recycling containers within these recycling
00:11 - 00:15
containers. If I mismatched or did things erroneously, they could
00:15 - 00:18
ultimately find me for not recycling appropriate.
00:18 - 00:20
Or they would just leave it at my house for
00:20 - 00:23
me to figure out sort appropriately in order to get
00:23 - 00:24
into the appropriate recycling containers.
00:24 - 00:27
So it's truly astonishing to think about the amount of
00:27 - 00:30
waste that we produce here in United States and generally
00:30 - 00:33
a lot of times just the general in action that
00:33 - 00:35
we take as citizens in the United States.
00:36 - 00:39
That ultimate leads to more pollution or more plastic making
00:39 - 00:42
its way into the ocean, impacting our sea turtle population.
00:43 - 00:45
So with that, today, my goal is to go over
00:45 - 00:48
and talk about potential ways that we can reuse are
00:48 - 00:52
plastic pieces within our homes on dhe what I found
00:52 - 00:54
here in our house to ultimately come with a new
00:54 - 00:56
product and that is a hammock.
00:58 - 00:59
As I went to develop my own mind map, as
01:00 - 01:03
you can see here, identified the high offenders when it
01:03 - 01:07
comes to plastic waste within our household, from grocery bags
01:08 - 01:12
to pillboxes to grocery store fruit containers and food containers.
01:13 - 01:16
Um, to even the more coveted recently Duke over 19,
01:17 - 01:22
the dying out packages that come with, um, extra waste
01:22 - 01:24
items. Ultimate that you have to get rid of whether
01:24 - 01:28
it's paper composed, combust, compostable items or different things we
01:28 - 01:29
have to get rid of.
01:29 - 01:31
But ultimately, I decided that I was going to stick
01:31 - 01:35
with grocery bags because these are the things every time
01:35 - 01:37
I go to the grocery store, they asked, paper or
01:37 - 01:40
plastic. I feel you know that I don't want to
01:40 - 01:40
inconvenience them.
01:41 - 01:43
So I say plastic because it'll be quicker but ultimately
01:44 - 01:47
creates this issue in scenario where I have these grocery
01:48 - 01:49
bags that I don't know what to do with.
01:50 - 01:52
And so within this in our household we do a
01:52 - 01:52
number of things.
01:53 - 01:54
There's an in store recycling aspect that we can do
01:54 - 01:55
and take back to the store.
01:56 - 01:59
Um, sometimes the banks just aren't recyclable, and so then
01:59 - 02:02
we end up storing them and finding a new use
02:02 - 02:03
or reuse purpose.
02:03 - 02:05
And so some of these could be things like a
02:05 - 02:08
dog. You waste bag to go out instead of using
02:08 - 02:09
a new bag.
02:09 - 02:11
We're now reusing something that hopefully eliminate some of the
02:11 - 02:15
waste that gets entered into, um, the down streams of
02:16 - 02:19
pollution as well as, um, sometimes an additional waste fake
02:19 - 02:21
right. We're using it to go into a trash bag
02:21 - 02:23
to take out future trash, and these are all great.
02:23 - 02:27
But the issue is there not necessarily read reducing the
02:27 - 02:30
impact into the environment because they are being introduced at
02:30 - 02:34
some point back into the pollution zone or into a
02:34 - 02:35
trash area or other things.
02:35 - 02:37
And so then I thought about what can we do
02:37 - 02:37
with these?
02:38 - 02:43
Um, grocery bags that can eliminate the aspect of them
02:43 - 02:46
going into a recycling plant are going into a trash
02:47 - 02:50
way center and ultimately potentially making their way downstream.
02:50 - 02:52
And so I thought, What could these be used for?
02:52 - 02:54
And that's where I came into kind of three concepts
02:54 - 02:57
within my mind map, and that's a rug, a hammock
02:57 - 02:57
and swing.
02:58 - 02:59
And so in these alternative use for these new uses,
03:00 - 03:03
ultimately the one I settled with was a hammock, because
03:03 - 03:06
who doesn't like to relax the end of the day
03:06 - 03:06
in a hammock.
03:06 - 03:09
And if I can recycle toe lead to relaxing, that's
03:10 - 03:11
a win win in my book.
03:12 - 03:15
But ultimately, how do we take something as simple as
03:15 - 03:20
a grocery bag and turn it into a reusable hammock?
03:23 - 03:26
Well, why not map it out, make a sketch, right?
03:26 - 03:28
Yea, we get our groceries or excited, we get home,
03:29 - 03:29
we unload them into the fridge.
03:30 - 03:32
Then ultimately, what do we do with these?
03:33 - 03:34
We kind of went through this and I went.
03:35 - 03:36
And then I did some research and found out ways
03:36 - 03:39
that we can turn grocery bags in tow and link
03:39 - 03:42
them together into rope that ultimately braid them together to
03:42 - 03:43
turn them into hammock.
03:44 - 03:46
So here's kind of ah, brief step by step instruction,
03:47 - 03:50
right here they are, the bags laying on our doorstep
03:51 - 03:51
at the house.
03:51 - 03:52
We don't know what to do with them.
03:53 - 03:55
We take them, were able to open up the bags,
03:56 - 03:58
turn them into two giant owes essentially, and we compress
03:59 - 03:59
them together.
03:59 - 04:02
And then from there we do a simple not on
04:02 - 04:04
each of them, and we're gonna turn them into into
04:04 - 04:07
ropes. These ropes ultimately get linked together, and you could
04:07 - 04:09
make him a ZX, long as you would like or
04:09 - 04:11
however long you'd like to make your hammock because ultimately
04:12 - 04:16
we're going to braid these pieces together to turn them
04:16 - 04:17
into little bits of rope.
04:17 - 04:18
Now, this was a learning pure for me, right?
04:19 - 04:21
I'm not that familiar with braiding or other components.
04:21 - 04:23
I have a young daughter, but this became the first
04:24 - 04:25
education piece for me.
04:25 - 04:26
So I'd like to you know, my braiding was not
04:26 - 04:29
the finest piece of work, but it did stand up
04:29 - 04:31
to the test of time, and it will hold a
04:31 - 04:31
great amount of weight.
04:32 - 04:36
In fact, even somebody like myself, um who You know
04:37 - 04:38
that 6 ft, you know, roughly £200.
04:39 - 04:41
That's a good amount of weight and an impressive amount
04:41 - 04:43
of weight for just simple grocery bags to be able
04:43 - 04:44
to use.
04:45 - 04:47
And ultimately, what I came to figure out is that
04:47 - 04:49
with these grocery bags and developing them into a hammock,
04:50 - 04:53
we would save approximately 300 bags or 300 less bags
04:54 - 04:57
being reintroduced into the environment as we look to turn
04:57 - 04:59
them into something as beautiful as you see here as
04:59 - 05:04
this wonderful pink and red and, um, colorful hammock because
05:04 - 05:06
all this bright and all this work is going to
05:06 - 05:08
cause it to go into something else rather than reintroducing
05:09 - 05:10
it to a landfill downstream.
05:11 - 05:11
And so why not?
05:12 - 05:14
Why not take this extra step?
05:14 - 05:16
Why not reduce the impact the environment?
05:16 - 05:19
Why not help these sea turtles live a little longer,
05:19 - 05:21
or at least not seek medical attention that they need
05:22 - 05:22
every year?
05:22 - 05:24
So that's what I asked for you is as you
05:24 - 05:26
go and explore your own ways to see how you
05:26 - 05:29
can reduce and reuse the plastics with your home is
05:30 - 05:31
why not do a simple braid?
05:31 - 05:33
Why not do us a little bit of simple research
05:34 - 05:36
in order to make the environment a better place?
05:36 - 05:39
Thank you all for listening today, and hopefully you can
05:39 - 05:42
relax someday on your reusable hammock.
