00:01 - 00:05
Hi dr Jamison, this is my video demonstrating the micro
00:05 - 00:09
skill of opening close questions today.
00:10 - 00:14
I am joined by my husband or client.
00:17 - 00:22
Um Mr Justin and he has come here today because
00:22 - 00:27
he's experiencing some troubles at work um that have just
00:27 - 00:29
contributed to his anxiety and stress.
00:32 - 00:33
Mr Foulkes.
00:35 - 00:36
What brings you in today?
00:38 - 00:43
Well, I am worried about my return to work.
00:45 - 00:46
What concerns do you?
00:47 - 00:54
Well, I've been off for a few months and when
00:54 - 00:58
I was there last I was really having trouble with
01:00 - 01:04
just like the day to day interactions that I have
01:04 - 01:05
with the people in my lab.
01:07 - 01:08
Okay, could you expand on that?
01:09 - 01:19
Yeah. Found myself like anywhere from frustrated too paranoid um
01:21 - 01:27
where I wasn't sure if people were just asking me
01:27 - 01:30
questions to mess with me or if they were being
01:30 - 01:39
genuine and um really needing my my help on something.
01:41 - 01:44
Okay. How did those interactions make you feel?
01:45 - 01:55
Well the, whenever a specific problem at first occur um
01:57 - 02:00
or they bring a problem to me and I would
02:01 - 02:02
assist. Yeah.
02:03 - 02:08
I would initially feel like a valued member of the
02:09 - 02:17
team but the problem starts when they come to me
02:17 - 02:23
with the same problem every day and It feels like
02:24 - 02:30
it's a 51st dates situation where uh I just I
02:30 - 02:34
truly don't know if they're forgetting the very thing I
02:34 - 02:41
told them the day before or if they are trolling
02:41 - 02:42
me to get a reaction.
02:44 - 02:49
We've had a strained relationship, I've had a string relationship
02:50 - 02:55
with nearly everyone in the lab um For the last
02:55 - 02:56
year or two at released.
02:57 - 03:01
Okay. And why do you feel it's been strained?
03:02 - 03:08
Well, there's been a lot of disagreements about approaches to
03:08 - 03:14
how we should fix things, anything from my supplying tools
03:15 - 03:17
to fixing procedures.
03:19 - 03:22
Um, mm I can't tell if they want my input
03:23 - 03:29
or oh, if they just want me to shut up
03:29 - 03:37
and stay in my little corner and just do a
03:37 - 03:40
very narrow range of, of work.
03:42 - 03:48
Yeah. Doing that narrow range of work is not extremely
03:48 - 03:53
fulfilling. I like being a part of like problem solving,
03:54 - 03:58
big picture stuff and it sounds like people are coming
03:58 - 04:04
to you and asking questions so you're definitely knowledgeable in
04:05 - 04:05
that area.
04:06 - 04:11
Yeah, I mean it seems like it, I feel like
04:11 - 04:14
I'm knowledgeable in those areas and I feel like I
04:14 - 04:15
have something to offer the company.
04:17 - 04:23
But um, I hear whispers sometimes.
04:25 - 04:30
Yeah, I think they're talking about me or laughing about
04:31 - 04:32
a position I'm taking.
04:33 - 04:37
Oh, we've had lots of political disagreements as well.
04:38 - 04:42
Obviously the political climate is very charged right now.
04:43 - 04:50
And even though I've tried to stay Yeah, mostly silent
04:50 - 04:51
on some issues.
04:52 - 04:58
We've got into some pretty heated debates and where they
04:58 - 05:05
have insulted me and how did you take that when
05:06 - 05:06
they insulted you?
05:07 - 05:09
Oh, I have not chosen wisely.
05:10 - 05:16
I've, I've taken the low road and insulted back and
05:18 - 05:22
you know, matched the raise voice with my raised voice
05:23 - 05:28
and they seem to be able to get away with
05:28 - 05:34
it. But I'm, I've been pulled aside several times, meanwhile
05:36 - 05:43
um for being negative in the lab, so you feel
05:43 - 05:45
singled out a little bit.
05:45 - 05:49
Yeah. Yeah, I mean that's that's what it seems like
05:50 - 05:53
any way it could be that other people are getting
05:55 - 06:00
talk to, but I just don't see it and I
06:00 - 06:05
feel like I just have to retreat into my space
06:07 - 06:12
and then I am completely unprepared when they need my
06:12 - 06:13
help again.
06:14 - 06:20
And so with the whispers and everything that has come
06:20 - 06:23
to pass, I just don't know how to respond to
06:23 - 06:30
them at, you do feel lonely when you're at work.
06:31 - 06:38
Yeah, There's probably 15 or some of us that work
06:39 - 06:44
in a relatively small space, but I probably amount in
06:44 - 06:46
good terms with Maybe one or 2.
06:47 - 06:55
Mhm. And uh well Probably one now since the one
06:55 - 06:58
that I've really gone along with it was let go
06:59 - 07:02
and how do you similar situations, how do you feel
07:03 - 07:05
about that your friend being let go?
07:06 - 07:09
Uh I just feel like at any time I could
07:09 - 07:19
be next, but on the other hand, like I have
07:20 - 07:25
said I've I've been a problem child in their eyes
07:26 - 07:29
for a while and they still haven't gotten rid of
07:29 - 07:33
me. So maybe it's not as bad as I think,
07:35 - 07:37
I don't know of.
07:38 - 07:42
What do you classify this environment is a place where
07:42 - 07:51
you would thrive, I I think to thrive there we
07:52 - 07:59
would need to revamp leadership in rolls there so that
08:01 - 08:08
Mhm the people that are excelling in their positions are
08:08 - 08:13
given a chance to to be promoted and the people
08:14 - 08:19
that are not doing so well in their positions are
08:21 - 08:25
given additional training or coaching or whatever, they need to
08:25 - 08:27
get better or to move them out.
08:28 - 08:31
And so I just feel like there's a very narrow
08:33 - 08:40
window where my workplace could be a still be a
08:40 - 08:41
good fit for me.
08:42 - 08:43
I enjoy the work I do.
08:45 - 08:51
The work itself is a mixture of, you know, working
08:52 - 08:55
with my hands, which I enjoy building and tearing apart
08:55 - 08:58
things and also troubleshooting.
08:59 - 09:04
So it's like, you know, so I'm bringing in their
09:04 - 09:09
car, you kind of has a weird thing going on.
09:10 - 09:14
There's some, if you're curious person, you tend to enjoy
09:15 - 09:18
figuring out what's wrong and why it went wrong and
09:19 - 09:20
I enjoy that part.
09:22 - 09:25
I enjoy the process improvement part of my job.
09:27 - 09:35
But I don't particularly enjoy the part of my job
09:35 - 09:44
where I am doing the same training tasks with people,
09:45 - 09:53
especially when they're supposed to be experienced technicians and I'm
09:53 - 09:57
training them over and over again, as you're telling me
09:58 - 10:02
that I'm sensing some sadness from you.
10:02 - 10:07
Is is it hard to think back on some of
10:07 - 10:08
these interactions you've had?
10:09 - 10:13
Yeah, because there's a, there's a lot of them, I
10:13 - 10:20
wish I could have handled better and um mm I,
10:24 - 10:29
I'm a believer in jesus and I don't think because
10:30 - 10:33
of my behavior in the lab that they would be
10:33 - 10:36
able to tell and so there's sadness because of that.
10:38 - 10:45
Um and there's also sadness with like working so hard
10:45 - 10:53
to to improve something eman realizing that you cannot, you
10:54 - 10:59
can't yeah, do any more for it and is a
10:59 - 11:05
big corporation, they're gonna go on without me like and
11:05 - 11:11
so in the end, you know there rise or demise
11:13 - 11:18
is not continue on me being there.
11:18 - 11:19
The thriving there.
11:21 - 11:24
It sounds like you all right here.
11:25 - 11:26
I think you've put a lot of your heart and
11:26 - 11:32
soul into this position and and your interactions haven't been
11:33 - 11:40
the greatest Yeah, I want it encourage you that you
11:42 - 11:46
it's it says a lot about your character that you
11:46 - 11:50
are reflecting back and uh huh some of these interactions
11:51 - 11:53
and wish they've gone better.
11:55 - 12:00
Just your awareness of that that's big, it's a big
12:00 - 12:10
deal and um right business just do turnout people a
12:10 - 12:15
lot of the times, but I want to encourage you
12:15 - 12:19
that the value that you've gotten, the knowledge we've gotten,
12:19 - 12:22
you get to keep, you can take that with you.
12:23 - 12:27
Yeah. And it does seem like a lot of people
12:27 - 12:32
that have left that have been people that I've been
12:33 - 12:36
able to work with over the years but have left
12:36 - 12:43
because um just getting the same run around, I'm kidding,
12:44 - 12:47
they've been able to go on and find better jobs
12:48 - 12:57
and and more stable industries are most able environment, does
12:57 - 13:00
that give you hope about future jobs?
13:02 - 13:05
Yeah and it just seems like it's a matter of
13:07 - 13:10
get me over this hump where I can start to
13:10 - 13:18
think about uh huh Oh the value I can bring
13:18 - 13:22
them to a company, another company, so I can work
13:23 - 13:28
on my resume and that sort of thing and think
13:28 - 13:34
about ways to get my confidence back up because I
13:34 - 13:39
feel like that's something that's been crushed by here repeated
13:40 - 13:48
uh huh negative interactions I guess I really appreciate you
13:48 - 13:52
sharing and it sounds like you have a lot of
13:52 - 13:56
knowledge and a lot to offer and so I really
13:56 - 13:57
appreciate it.
13:57 - 14:01
You're sharing just some of your struggles with me.
14:01 - 14:06
And I hope that as we continue to discuss them
14:06 - 14:11
and and as you continue to gain confidence and hope
14:11 - 14:15
in the future that you would be on a path
14:15 - 14:20
that can really see your value because you are valuable
14:22 - 14:24
human being and a wonderful man.
14:26 - 14:27
Thank you.
14:28 - 14:29
Yeah. Uh huh.
14:30 - 14:30
Thank you.
14:32 - 14:35
This is real talks with Justin and Megan.
14:35 - 14:39
Thank you for listening and I hope that you enjoy
14:40 - 14:43
