  1. Hello, weary travelers.
  2. I am Omar, your dungeon grandmaster.
  3. No, I'm just kidding.
  4. We're gonna be playing D and D today.
  5. Instead, I'm gonna inform you guys about the significance overall,
  6. playing games.
  7. Okay. Now, as someone who has endured hundreds of hours
  8. of role playing games, I have become very well versed
  9. with the history and significance that it has, you know,
  10. come to give to our society.
  11. Now, according to times free press dot com, I'm not
  12. the only one.
  13. There is actually an estimated 5.5 million regular tabletop RPG
  14. players in the US alone, which means these games are
  15. all around us and already embedded in the culture, right?
  16. These RPGs have affected the culture, offered an outlet of
  17. relief to its players and up sort of the creation
  18. of an entire video game genre.
  19. Right? So in this speech, I'll briefly discuss what RPGs
  20. are. In fact, they have on gaming history and society
  21. and the positive and negative consequences that, uh, you can
  22. get from playing such games.
  23. Now, before we can happen to a dungeon, we must
  24. first know what a dungeon even is.
  25. So the most relevant popular form of tabletop RPGs is,
  26. of course, Dungeons and Dragons or DND for sure, right,
  27. which I'll be dissecting in detail for you guys and
  28. explaining how to play it, right?
  29. So in a D and D campaign, which is a
  30. fancy word for story, there's two types of people.
  31. There's a dungeon master or a D M and a
  32. player. Now the D M controls the full aspect of
  33. the university.
  34. Guys are being put in the world building the city's
  35. the towns and 10 PCs that characters the loot, the
  36. monsters, the combat system, the actions and the abilities you
  37. can get.
  38. Everything is up to the D M, but as a
  39. player, you get put into the DMZ world to interact
  40. freely in any way.
  41. You wish, for example, to the D.
  42. M puts you in a tavern.
  43. You can buy a drink for your friends.
  44. Rap battle.
  45. Someone break dancing on the floor room, break a chair
  46. over someone's head.
  47. The possibilities are limitless.
  48. It's all up to what you want to do, right?
  49. Uh, of course, it's not all willy nilly.
  50. There are rules to DND.
  51. For example, there's an action in combat system, uh, things
  52. involving stats like, uh, strength, dexterity, Constitution, intelligence, wisdom, charisma,
  53. you name it.
  54. There's many different stats that a player can get to
  55. affect how they do certain actions, right?
  56. And, of course, everything depends on dice rolls.
  57. Uh, usually people use a D 20 to play DND,
  58. which is a dice with 20 sides.
  59. Say you want to pick up a box, you roll
  60. your strength stat, and you roll a D 20 for
  61. it. If you roll a one, which is the lowest
  62. number, you can dislocate your arms picking up this box.
  63. It's a horrible failure if you roll a 20.
  64. On the other hand, it is a perfect success, meaning
  65. you can do not only lifting up that one box,
  66. but every box in the room.
  67. You know, it is the highest quality that you can
  68. perform the action with now, in terms of the things
  69. you can do within a campaign.
  70. Like I said, it's all up to the D M.
  71. He can make an action type of story where you're
  72. a boxer trying to become the world champ.
  73. You can make a mystery where you try to figure
  74. out who murdered the king, who is the assassin, You
  75. can make it a horror where you and your friends
  76. are thrown into a haunted house.
  77. Of course, it's all up to the D M.
  78. And the possibilities, like I said, are limitless.
  79. And now that you know what that crazy is all
  80. about, we're gonna talk about RPGs came to be such
  81. a well known phenomenon in the culture of the United
  82. States. So RPGs or DND specifically were such an innovative
  83. and new concept in the gaming world that people just
  84. flock to it like moths to a flame.
  85. In fact, according to a comic book dot com, uh,
  86. players of all ages came to the game from 13
  87. to 40 and beyond.
  88. And according to the verge dot com, the popularity has
  89. reached to such an extent that DND has been referenced
  90. heavily and shows like Netflix's stranger things.
  91. If that rings a bell for you.
  92. Uh, matter of fact, the entire genre of turn based
  93. games, you know, came from DND.
  94. For example, Final fantasy role of Warcraft.
  95. Pokemon all took elements from DND and put it into
  96. their games.
  97. You know, for example, things like hit points, luck, attack
  98. name, monsters, hidden loot n P C s you name
  99. it. It probably came from DND at some point in
  100. time and according to the gamer dot com Pokemon Roller
  101. Worker final fantasy that all took and even Triple A
  102. titles, they took all these elements and put them kind
  103. of like the DNA of DND, put them into their
  104. game and base their rules around this core structure of
  105. tabletop RPGs, which they stemmed from and to the state,
  106. is more hyping generated around DND.
  107. You know, for things such as, uh, you have things
  108. like Web series like Critical Role, where your favorite voice
  109. actors and celebrities coming together to play a DND session
  110. live streaming for y'all to watch, you know, steadily growing
  111. the the hype and the popularity of DND.
  112. There's also an official DND store, where they sell the
  113. iconic weapons and armor from such games that you can
  114. wear in real life.
  115. You know, that's pretty cool, and it also slowly, like
  116. I said, build up the hype and popularity of such
  117. games. Now, aside from the impact which we just discussed,
  118. there are effects of playing DND beneficial and detrimental.
  119. According to Katie layer dot com DND psychologically linked to
  120. potentially serve as a kind of therapy to those who
  121. play it, for example, it can improve your social skills,
  122. boost your self esteem and even practice impulse control in
  123. patients. You can even build emotional bonds or the people
  124. that you play on the table with as you interact
  125. with their characters through your own gives you a chance
  126. to expand your mind.
  127. You see you're playing as someone else in DND, so
  128. you get to perceive things in different lights.
  129. Okay, and of course, customization is limitless, allowing you to
  130. practice your creative liberties.
  131. An experiment here and there now, like I said, there
  132. are various problems of playing DND.
  133. For example, according to slide flourish dot com, the average
  134. session of DND can last well above four hours, which
  135. is mentally exhausting, especially for a player who has never
  136. done tabletop refugees in the past.
  137. And, of course, like any game playing to longer being
  138. to immerse can lead to game addiction, just never a
  139. good thing.
  140. And, of course, like many multiplayer games like, for example,
  141. monopoly arguments can arise between the table, and, you know
  142. friendships can become a little bit shaky after one or
  143. two sessions, but that's all within reasonable expectations for any
  144. type of game.
  145. Now let me switch to slide for you all.
  146. Perfect. Alright.
  147. Information. You know, uh, tabletop RPGs are outlets for you
  148. and your friends can plug in some crazy fantasies and
  149. live in them.
  150. Due to the imaginative and non restrictive aspect of the
  151. game, RPGs have permanently affected our culture by adding an
  152. entire genre to the gaming world.
  153. These games can prove to be the exact kind of
  154. break you need in your life, your everyday activities offering
  155. the transfer your mind to exercise itself to its fullest
  156. ability. But like all things, however, one needs to exercise
  157. caution not to become too immersed or, you know, too
  158. addicted to playing, even though it can help you in
  159. terms of, uh, therapeutic, you know, benefits.
  160. Now, of course, a less.
  161. Our journey is over.

  163. new knowledge.
