00:02 - 00:06
Welcome today. We will be talking about abortions. I am maddie mccreary.
00:06 - 00:08
I am with planned parenthood and I look
00:08 - 00:11
forward to giving this informative speech to you
00:13 - 00:17
just a quick trigger warning. This information is very sensitive today.
00:17 - 00:19
I'll be discussing abortions, assault, incest,
00:19 - 00:23
things that are very difficult for some people.
00:23 - 00:28
So please keep that in mind as you go through the presentation with me and
00:28 - 00:33
let it and you may leave or click out if there's anything that is disturbing.
00:35 - 00:38
First off, we want to talk about what is abortion In the simplest terms,
00:38 - 00:40
it is the termination of pregnancy.
00:40 - 00:43
It's obviously a very nuanced subject and
00:43 - 00:46
something that can become very polarizing.
00:46 - 00:48
People are going to different spectrums and we want to make
00:48 - 00:51
sure that this is something people have the correct information on
00:52 - 00:55
A fact is that one out of every four women will
00:55 - 00:58
have an abortion by the time they are 45 years old.
00:58 - 01:01
So it is not as uncommon as people believe.
01:04 - 01:05
Another thing are the types of
01:06 - 01:11
of abortions. We will be talking about surgical instruction, which is when the
01:12 - 01:16
the doctor goes through the vaginal canal through the cervix
01:16 - 01:20
to take out the pregnancy and terminate it. And the other is a pill
01:20 - 01:23
that is prescribed to the mother or the person
01:23 - 01:25
that is carrying the pregnancy to terminate it.
01:28 - 01:31
Another misconception is that emergency contraceptive
01:31 - 01:33
is a formative of an abortion.
01:33 - 01:34
It is not.
01:34 - 01:36
It is most commonly known as Plan B.
01:36 - 01:36
However,
01:36 - 01:41
this just prevents the implantation of an egg after it's been fertilized by sperm.
01:41 - 01:44
It prevents sperm from going to the egg or
01:44 - 01:47
sometimes it even prevents the ovulation of the egg.
01:50 - 01:52
Next I wanted to go through a brief history
01:53 - 01:58
of what we will be talking about today and how abortion has affected our society.
02:00 - 02:03
Abortion has been around for centuries.
02:03 - 02:07
However, it has been a little bit more medieval until the last two centuries.
02:07 - 02:08
In 1821,
02:08 - 02:11
the first legislation was enacted which put the first kind of
02:11 - 02:15
rules around abortion and what is allowed and what isn't allowed.
02:15 - 02:18
That also provided a sense of safety so
02:18 - 02:21
that women were no longer seeking unsafe abortions.
02:21 - 02:25
In 1890, physician consent was needed,
02:25 - 02:28
which is the consent of two physicians that
02:28 - 02:30
the pregnancy does need to be terminated.
02:30 - 02:31
However, this took away
02:32 - 02:32
the
02:34 - 02:36
decision surrounding women's
02:37 - 02:39
Rights to abortion.
02:39 - 02:39
However,
02:39 - 02:45
it was now more feasible and in 1971 Roe vs Wade was enacted and
02:45 - 02:49
ruled by the Supreme Court that all women have the right to a safe,
02:49 - 02:53
free and accessible abortion within the first two months of pregnancy.
02:54 - 02:54
Yeah.
02:55 - 02:58
Now why might someone have an abortion?
02:59 - 03:03
The first is the lack of support, financial, mental or physical
03:04 - 03:05
financially
03:05 - 03:10
Children are expensive and women may not be able to support that.
03:10 - 03:12
They may not have the correct job or be in the right mindset,
03:12 - 03:16
mentally having a child and carrying a child,
03:16 - 03:20
but then also taking care of the child is a very large emotional toll
03:20 - 03:21
and mental toll
03:22 - 03:24
especially it can be mentally tolling if you have to put
03:24 - 03:28
that child into foster care when the foster care system within the
03:28 - 03:30
our country and the world is not a great one.
03:30 - 03:31
Also, physically,
03:31 - 03:34
it can be very difficult on a woman's body whether or
03:34 - 03:37
not they're overweight or underweight or even at a regular weight,
03:37 - 03:38
it is still very hard
03:39 - 03:39
and
03:40 - 03:41
it can be something that
03:43 - 03:45
can really affect women and affect their body
03:45 - 03:46
in a way they don't want it to.
03:48 - 03:51
Another thing is a non viable pregnancy.
03:51 - 03:55
An ectopic pregnancy is when the egg implants within
03:56 - 03:58
the fallopian tube and the pregnancy continues to grow.
03:58 - 04:01
However, if that pregnancy is not terminated
04:02 - 04:05
then the pregnancy will grow and eventually burst the fallopian tube and
04:05 - 04:08
it is a possibility that the mother could bleed to death or
04:09 - 04:11
possibly be sterilized because of that.
04:11 - 04:13
So if they want to have Children
04:14 - 04:16
later in their lifetime, when they want to try again,
04:16 - 04:19
like topic pregnancy can take away from that ability.
04:19 - 04:21
The second is a miscarriage.
04:21 - 04:24
Unfortunately, a lot of women suffer miscarriages when the
04:24 - 04:26
pregnancy is no longer viable and
04:27 - 04:32
the body sees the fetus as a foreign body and wants to expel it out.
04:32 - 04:32
However,
04:32 - 04:36
it does not always mean that the fetus is completely
04:36 - 04:38
expelled out of the body a lot of times.
04:38 - 04:41
This means that it stays within the uterus and
04:41 - 04:44
if it is not expelled correctly or taken out,
04:44 - 04:48
the fetus can calcify and stay within the woman's body and cause other health
04:48 - 04:49
concerns.
04:50 - 04:51
So it is important that
04:52 - 04:54
a woman is to take the fetus
04:55 - 05:00
out of her body in order to ensure that she is able to have Children in the future.
05:03 - 05:08
The next is health concerns. This is most likely the late term abortions,
05:08 - 05:11
something that is still very polarizing and
05:12 - 05:14
uncomfortable topic. Most people would say
05:15 - 05:18
for the mother, she may consider an abortion if the fetus
05:19 - 05:23
could cause her incredible harm, whether or not that is sterilization or death
05:23 - 05:26
during the pregnancy or during the delivery
05:27 - 05:28
for the fetus. That is also
05:29 - 05:30
when um
05:31 - 05:34
the fetus cannot survive outside of the womb,
05:34 - 05:38
whether or not that is being stillborn or having a condition or underdeveloped
05:38 - 05:41
um organs so that they can no longer survive
05:41 - 05:43
outside of the mother's womb without the support.
05:46 - 05:48
Another reason why is age,
05:48 - 05:51
unfortunately, a lot of Children
05:51 - 05:53
face child assault and incest.
05:53 - 05:56
They're already too young to become a mother,
05:56 - 05:59
already too young to carry a pregnancy and their body cannot handle it.
05:59 - 06:03
However, child assault and incest are something that are very hard topics
06:04 - 06:05
and
06:06 - 06:09
would be detrimental to the child. If they were to carry on with the pregnancy.
06:09 - 06:13
Not only would it be detrimental to the child would be detrimental to the fetus
06:13 - 06:15
eventually coming out of the child.
06:16 - 06:18
Another thing is the lack of emotional maturity,
06:18 - 06:20
physical maturity and mental maturity
06:21 - 06:22
as Children
06:23 - 06:24
and teenagers,
06:24 - 06:26
a lot of times the sexual reproductive
06:26 - 06:29
health curriculum within schools or within our country
06:29 - 06:32
does not do its best job at helping
06:32 - 06:34
them understand the consequences or what can happen
06:35 - 06:37
with unprotected sex and because of that,
06:37 - 06:42
people are not always mature enough to understand the burden of getting
06:42 - 06:45
pregnant at that time and it is best to terminate the pregnancy
06:47 - 06:51
lastly, in cases of assault. Unfortunately,
06:51 - 06:56
women and men are raped very often. However, during this time, women can
06:57 - 06:58
become pregnant
06:58 - 07:03
from the assault and this can be within dating a person you don't know
07:03 - 07:04
or a friend.
07:04 - 07:07
Unfortunately, that happens with a lot of people and mentally,
07:07 - 07:09
emotionally and physically, it is draining to the mother.
07:10 - 07:13
It is hard to know that you are carrying your perpetrators child.
07:13 - 07:16
It's also a very manipulative way for the
07:16 - 07:18
perpetrator to remain in the mother's life.
07:18 - 07:20
Once the child is born,
07:20 - 07:23
the perpetrator has full claim to the child and being a parent.
07:23 - 07:26
So if it is something that someone does not want to be a part of,
07:26 - 07:28
it is best for the
07:28 - 07:30
pregnancy to be terminated.
07:30 - 07:34
It's also very difficult for the mother to see if they were to have the child.
07:34 - 07:38
That this is half of the person who took something away from them,
07:38 - 07:40
took their ability to say no away from them
07:41 - 07:43
and kind of violated them in that way.
07:45 - 07:49
Lastly, we will be talking about what planned parenthood does
07:49 - 07:53
in the role of abortions. They provide decision counseling
07:53 - 07:54
and two different types of abortion.
07:56 - 07:58
One of the great things about planned
07:58 - 08:00
parenthood is they provide very objective counseling
08:01 - 08:04
people when they come into an abortion. It's not a drop of the hat decision.
08:04 - 08:08
It's something that they have been thinking about for a very long time
08:08 - 08:10
and are trying their best to discern what is best for them.
08:11 - 08:13
And we give them objective
08:14 - 08:15
counseling to tell them,
08:15 - 08:17
you know what here's what could happen if you do have the child.
08:17 - 08:19
Here's what happens if you don't.
08:19 - 08:23
That We also answer commonly asked questions and give them statistics
08:23 - 08:27
and stories from other people who have had an abortion.
08:27 - 08:28
This table here
08:28 - 08:29
is representative
08:30 - 08:35
of when women do have abortions. We also give explanations into
08:35 - 08:41
what can happen during this time and what other people go through
08:43 - 08:45
as for the types of abortion. We provide
08:46 - 08:49
the pill or suction abortion and
08:49 - 08:51
we just choose whatever is best for the mother
08:51 - 08:54
whether that is what they're most comfortable with or
08:55 - 08:58
what stage in the pregnancy they're at we also provide
08:58 - 09:01
after care as in checking up on them afterwards,
09:01 - 09:03
coming in for appointments and making sure they're okay.
09:03 - 09:05
We also offer full privacy.
09:05 - 09:09
This is a private decision, a decision that only the mother can make
09:09 - 09:13
and one that we respect and one that we do not want to spread
09:14 - 09:14
throughout.
09:16 - 09:16
So
09:17 - 09:19
thank you so much for listening about
09:20 - 09:25
abortions and all that they encompass today. We learned about what an abortion is
09:26 - 09:30
the history of it, why someone may have won and what we as planned parenthood do.
09:30 - 09:35
Thank you and we hope that you are able to take this information and critically
09:35 - 09:37
think about it to make your own decisions
09:37 - 09:40
and have very great discussions with people,
09:40 - 09:40
you know.
