00:01 - 00:05
Hello and welcome Thio are exciting new vocal.
00:05 - 00:07
Siri's called We Rise Again.
00:07 - 00:10
This is for OCHA, United Church and all of those
00:10 - 00:13
of us who want to sing together and want to
00:13 - 00:15
do it in a safer way during this pandemic.
00:17 - 00:17
So welcome.
00:18 - 00:19
We're doing a vocal Siri's.
00:20 - 00:22
That means that it's open to everyone, not just choir
00:22 - 00:25
members. Although I am hoping that our choir will get
00:25 - 00:28
together on dhe we're going to be doing in person
00:28 - 00:32
singing. Okay, We're also going to be, of course, following
00:32 - 00:32
health recommendations.
00:34 - 00:37
And if you have an underlying medical condition or just
00:37 - 00:40
wanting to be extra safe, then don't worry.
00:40 - 00:42
We have some at home options for you as well.
00:44 - 00:48
Now the whole idea is that this vocal Siri's will
00:48 - 00:52
actually be broken up into three sessions, and you can
00:52 - 00:54
sign up for one session or you can sign up
00:55 - 00:55
for three.
00:55 - 00:56
It's your choice.
00:56 - 01:00
Just know that space is limited, so the first session
01:00 - 01:03
will take place in October, the second in November and
01:03 - 01:04
the third in December.
01:05 - 01:06
Each session has two.
01:07 - 01:11
That's two rehearsals with the idea that the second rehearsal
01:11 - 01:14
we will be actually taping the song that we have
01:14 - 01:17
learned, and we will be offering that in our Sunday
01:17 - 01:20
worship as a recording so really excited about that.
01:21 - 01:23
You can also see that these air shorter rehearsals than
01:24 - 01:26
normal. They are at most an hour with a 10
01:27 - 01:29
minute break in the middle, because we're really trying to
01:30 - 01:31
say very safe.
01:33 - 01:36
So what does that mean when I say safer singing?
01:37 - 01:40
Um, I just want to be clear that it's always
01:40 - 01:43
good that we are trying to be as safe as
01:43 - 01:48
possible. We have are some epidemiologists who have said this
01:48 - 01:49
is a good plan.
01:49 - 01:53
That being said, if you are feeling concerned or worried,
01:53 - 01:55
we invite you to try the at home options.
01:56 - 01:59
Um, I have based all of our planning on the
01:59 - 02:03
recommendations that I see from our current studies from the
02:03 - 02:03
most recent studies.
02:04 - 02:05
So don't worry.
02:06 - 02:09
Uh, that being said again, it's okay to be cautious,
02:10 - 02:12
too. So one of the ways that we're going to
02:12 - 02:15
make it safe is that we're going to be asking
02:15 - 02:18
singers and providing if you do not have this, a
02:18 - 02:22
surgical well fitted mask and I will also be putting
02:22 - 02:24
in the comment box at the bottom and sending out
02:24 - 02:24
by email.
02:25 - 02:28
I, um the studies that show that surgical masks really
02:28 - 02:31
do decrease those aerosol transmissions.
02:32 - 02:33
We're wanting to be very careful.
02:33 - 02:35
So we're going to ask that people have a surgical,
02:36 - 02:36
well fitted mask.
02:37 - 02:40
And hey, if you haven't sung with the mask, I
02:40 - 02:40
know it sounds.
02:42 - 02:42
Oh, my goodness.
02:42 - 02:45
Frustrating. And how do I breathe at all this stuff?
02:45 - 02:48
But actually just thio put your mind at ease.
02:49 - 02:52
The oxygen levels that you have will be very similar,
02:52 - 02:54
if not the same with a surgical mask.
02:55 - 02:56
You don't need to worry about that.
02:56 - 03:00
And to I've been doing my own experimental singing in
03:00 - 03:01
a small group this summer.
03:01 - 03:05
They find that the first session eyes a little bit
03:05 - 03:07
annoying. And then after that, you kind of get used
03:07 - 03:08
to it and forget about it.
03:08 - 03:11
So it shouldn't be in hindrance to singing together.
03:12 - 03:15
Secondly, what we're going to do is we're going to
03:15 - 03:16
have social distancing.
03:16 - 03:20
Obviously, we're going to 3 m, which is more than
03:20 - 03:23
prudent, according to most of the guidelines that I've been
03:23 - 03:27
reading and we're going to have 15 singers max 15
03:27 - 03:29
which means if you want to do this we need
03:30 - 03:32
to sign up quickly, and I'll show you that at
03:32 - 03:32
the end of the video.
03:35 - 03:39
Now, just to give you a little bit of ah,
03:39 - 03:40
what is the latest research?
03:41 - 03:43
I'm just going to cite two studies, and again I'll
03:43 - 03:45
put the links to that below.
03:46 - 03:48
So the first one is led by the Coalition for
03:48 - 03:49
Performing Arts Again.
03:49 - 03:51
These air studies that just came out in the summer,
03:52 - 03:54
Um, and that was the one that recommended surgical masks,
03:55 - 03:59
short practice times, 2 m distance and indoor air ventilation,
04:00 - 04:03
eso like a HEPA air filter or opening windows and
04:03 - 04:07
doors and, ideally, a very large space, which I think
04:07 - 04:09
you'll agree that the Oak Bay saying sure is all
04:09 - 04:11
of those things with limited people.
04:13 - 04:17
The second study is called Perform, and you'll have seen
04:17 - 04:18
that 1 may be a hit.
04:18 - 04:21
BBC You, who saw it saying that singing is actually
04:21 - 04:25
the same as faras risk factors as talking, so that
04:26 - 04:27
doesn't mean that it has no risk factors.
04:28 - 04:30
But what that does mean is that the things that
04:30 - 04:32
we regularly dio we just want to keep.
04:33 - 04:36
If you talk regularly, then you could potentially sing regularly
04:36 - 04:37
to but we do that with the mask.
04:38 - 04:41
And also, if you are a loud talker or you
04:42 - 04:45
are yelling, that carries more risk just like loud singing,
04:46 - 04:49
then quieter talking and quieter singing.
04:49 - 04:51
So volume is attached there to risk.
04:54 - 04:58
So what that means for us is that we're going
04:58 - 05:00
to create monthly videos.
05:01 - 05:02
This does not mean a virtual choir.
05:02 - 05:04
You do not need to be singing in your basement,
05:05 - 05:05
although you can.
05:06 - 05:07
If you're doing online, I'll get into that.
05:08 - 05:11
But what we're thinking is that each session I will
05:12 - 05:15
provide practice tracks so you'll do most of your note
05:15 - 05:16
learning at home.
05:17 - 05:19
And that means that when we get together in practice
05:19 - 05:22
time, we just get the joy of singing and crafting
05:22 - 05:23
a sound.
05:23 - 05:25
We're not taking time to learn notes or toe warm
05:26 - 05:29
up. We're just there to put the piece together, and
05:29 - 05:32
that will, um, make it actually more fun for us.
05:32 - 05:36
I think I would suggest, um, what that also means
05:36 - 05:39
is that when we get together, that last rehearsal of
05:39 - 05:42
the sessions So the second rehearsal, we're going to be
05:42 - 05:46
taping ourselves singing, and you're gonna have microphones close by
05:46 - 05:47
you. So you don't have to sing too loudly.
05:48 - 05:50
We'll have cameras there and we'll just do it live
05:51 - 05:51
in the moment.
05:51 - 05:55
And it will capture that beautiful moment in time when
05:55 - 05:58
we were all singing and heart beating at the same
05:59 - 06:02
time. Oh, I should just mention before I go on.
06:03 - 06:04
Let's go back for a second.
06:05 - 06:08
Um, if you are one of those online options, what
06:08 - 06:10
we're hoping is that you can watch these rehearsals online.
06:11 - 06:13
They will be broadcast it and then you can.
06:14 - 06:16
I'll send you the choir video that we make right
06:16 - 06:17
after we make it.
06:18 - 06:21
Your job will then be to record yourself, not video,
06:21 - 06:21
just audio.
06:22 - 06:25
Record yourself singing along and we will put your voice
06:25 - 06:29
into the post production mix are talented Casey.
06:29 - 06:31
Then Winston will do that, and that way you'll be
06:31 - 06:33
included in this whole process.
06:35 - 06:38
Now you may be asking, Well, that's fine, Amy, but
06:38 - 06:38
is a good music.
06:39 - 06:41
I would say that I think it is so October.
06:41 - 06:42
We're going to be doing one voice.
06:43 - 06:46
Choir members have already received the practice tracks for that
06:46 - 06:46
in June.
06:47 - 06:50
In November, we're doing we rise again by the rank
06:50 - 06:53
and Family, a classic especially during co bid and then
06:53 - 06:54
in December.
06:54 - 06:56
I have yet to pick it, but it's going to
06:56 - 06:58
be a Christmas piece that we will be using in
06:58 - 06:59
our Christmas.
07:00 - 07:03
I'm special on Christmas Eve.
07:03 - 07:06
So looking forward to all of that now, you might
07:06 - 07:08
say, Amy, that sounds amazing.
07:09 - 07:11
I hope you are, at least on def.
07:11 - 07:12
That's what you are thinking.
07:12 - 07:15
Then I invite you to sign up like pronto like
07:15 - 07:18
Do it after you see this video because we're keeping
07:19 - 07:20
it small for safety.
07:20 - 07:22
So 15 singers maximum.
07:23 - 07:24
That's right, 15 singers.
07:25 - 07:28
Mexico. Um, now you can Onley sign up or you
07:28 - 07:30
can choose to Onley sign up for one session.
07:30 - 07:32
You can also choose to sign up for three.
07:32 - 07:34
You just need to specify, and you are going to
07:35 - 07:37
do that by other phone in the office at the
07:37 - 07:38
number right over there.
07:39 - 07:41
Or you can also email me at music at Oak
07:42 - 07:43
Bay United Church dot c A.
07:45 - 07:49
So lots of good information, lots of great opportunities to
07:49 - 07:52
sing together again just to confirm for the choir.
07:52 - 07:54
What that means is that if you join all three
07:55 - 07:59
sessions, you will be rehearsing every other Thursday night every
08:00 - 08:03
other Thursday night, which will decrease a little bit of
08:03 - 08:05
our load through this crazy time.
08:05 - 08:08
And, uh, it also means that if you just want
08:09 - 08:11
to try it out, you can just try it out
08:11 - 08:11
for a month.
08:11 - 08:14
See how you dio and we can always look at
08:14 - 08:16
it after that again, This is a whole new time
08:17 - 08:20
full of new opportunities and new solutions, we hope.
08:20 - 08:23
And, uh, also, I think it's really important that we
08:23 - 08:26
continue to sing through hardship as it gives us a
08:26 - 08:30
way to, um kind of deal with all the stress
08:30 - 08:30
of the day.
08:31 - 08:33
To just let it go and sing, which I think
08:33 - 08:34
were meant to do is people.
08:35 - 08:37
So I hope that you join us hope that you
08:37 - 08:41
sign up by those things that I highlighted and hopefully
08:41 - 08:42
we'll sing together soon.
08:43 - 08:43
All right, take care
