00:01 - 00:02
Hi,
00:02 - 00:04
my name is Julia and today I'm going to
00:04 - 00:07
be talking to you about the special events industry.
00:10 - 00:13
So first of all, what is considered a special event.
00:14 - 00:18
A special event is a gathering designed to celebrate
00:19 - 00:21
honor, discuss self
00:21 - 00:26
teach about, encourage observe or influence human endeavors.
00:27 - 00:31
The special events sector of the hospitality industry
00:31 - 00:35
includes but is not limited to private events,
00:35 - 00:39
sporting events, public events and fairs and festivals.
00:40 - 00:43
A private event is going to be something like a wedding or
00:43 - 00:46
any other sort of party that's not open to the public,
00:47 - 00:49
but just a private party by a member of the public.
00:51 - 00:58
A sporting event is going to be anything put on by the N. B. A. The MLB, the NFL,
00:58 - 01:01
anything like that. Any sort of conferences,
01:01 - 01:04
interviews. Um party
01:05 - 01:09
is going to be a special event related to the sporting events.
01:09 - 01:11
So that's a whole other category in itself.
01:12 - 01:14
We have public events,
01:14 - 01:17
anything that's going to be like your street fair, concert in the park,
01:17 - 01:20
anything put on by the city or for the public
01:21 - 01:25
as well as fairs and festivals. Everyone loves affair.
01:25 - 01:29
We have festivals like Coachella, stage, coach,
01:29 - 01:34
everything like that is going to be a special event as well.
01:34 - 01:39
So really it's a very diverse industry, there's many subcategories within it
01:40 - 01:41
and there's always a lot going on.
01:43 - 01:47
So this is just some examples of special events
01:50 - 01:54
since the special events industry is so broad and so diverse,
01:54 - 01:58
it is very important to keep up with current trends at all times.
02:00 - 02:04
One of the trends that we're seeing a lot of right now is hybrid events
02:05 - 02:09
Due to the rise of COVID-19, everything that happened with the pandemic,
02:09 - 02:15
it became unsafe to host a large number of people in a personal setting.
02:15 - 02:18
So we kind of had to shift the industry as
02:18 - 02:22
a whole and that brought us into hybrid events.
02:22 - 02:27
Hybrid events are going to be something where some members are brought in
02:27 - 02:31
via zoom or any other online platform on a screen like that,
02:32 - 02:35
some people are still there in person but it is not at capacity,
02:36 - 02:41
way less people than before. Kind of a mix of online and in person meetings.
02:42 - 02:46
Another adaptation of this is the fully virtual meeting.
02:47 - 02:51
A lot of events have just completely shifted online,
02:51 - 02:57
focusing on getting guests that full experience in a virtual format.
02:58 - 03:02
A way to avoid that shift to the virtual world
03:03 - 03:06
is with the use of micro events.
03:06 - 03:10
A micro event is going to be something that is a very small event.
03:10 - 03:14
You still have all of the elements that you would have
03:14 - 03:16
in your regular, you know, large event,
03:17 - 03:20
just with fewer people on a much smaller scale,
03:21 - 03:23
therefore making it safer for everyone
03:23 - 03:26
and you're still able to have that in person,
03:26 - 03:31
ceremony or celebration that you wanted without risking anyone's safety.
03:34 - 03:37
Another example of a trend in the special
03:37 - 03:40
events industry that is really popular right now
03:41 - 03:44
is going to be marketing or pr events,
03:45 - 03:50
social media influencers have kind of influenced the industry as well
03:51 - 03:56
and that has led to the rise of social media marketing and pr events,
03:56 - 04:00
You'll see a lot of these kind of like revolved best, for example,
04:00 - 04:05
a festival put on around the time of Coachella, sponsored by the brand revolve,
04:06 - 04:10
that gains a lot of attention and there's a huge fun event put on by them out there.
04:10 - 04:15
We also have amazon influencer trips most recently,
04:15 - 04:19
they went to Mexico and had a huge sponsored event out there,
04:19 - 04:23
got a lot of social media attention as well.
04:24 - 04:28
Another trend that we have been seeing a lot recently is
04:29 - 04:31
kind of the trend of no trend,
04:31 - 04:34
uniqueness and nonconformity,
04:35 - 04:36
so basically, kind of
04:37 - 04:40
everything being different, doing something personal
04:40 - 04:42
to you that really like
04:43 - 04:45
is a wow factor that no one has seen before.
04:45 - 04:48
Um that is a huge trend that we're seeing right now,
04:48 - 04:51
kind of pushing the boundaries here.
04:51 - 04:52
So,
04:52 - 04:55
one example of that is Kourtney Kardashian's recent
04:55 - 04:58
wedding to Travis Parker out in Italy,
04:58 - 05:00
it was sponsored by Dolce and Gabbana
05:01 - 05:07
and that kind of became a whole event in itself, they had a pop up shop, they had,
05:07 - 05:08
you know, all the paparazzi out there
05:09 - 05:12
and the whole thing was a sponsored event,
05:12 - 05:16
so that's just one example of a huge nontraditional event
05:16 - 05:21
um with her wedding dress and everything like that, prior to that,
05:21 - 05:22
her elopement in Las Vegas,
05:23 - 05:24
that's just the most recent
05:25 - 05:26
public
05:26 - 05:31
um example that comes to mind here, but that's kind of what we're going for.
05:31 - 05:35
Another way you could do this is with something here,
05:35 - 05:40
like a colorful wedding dress a lot more popular recently or, you know,
05:40 - 05:43
the elopement scenic wedding
05:43 - 05:47
kind of like a lot of people have been going on hikes out there,
05:47 - 05:48
getting married out there,
05:48 - 05:53
so that's just another example of how that trend has been influencing the industry.
05:57 - 06:01
Another trend in the industry that deserves its own slide
06:01 - 06:04
is the trend of sustainability in the special events industry,
06:05 - 06:09
sustainability is about decreasing waste and increasing efficiency.
06:10 - 06:15
There has been a major increase in demand for sustainability in recent years.
06:16 - 06:17
Eco friendly events
06:17 - 06:22
with an emphasis on reuse recycling and leaving a low carbon footprint
06:23 - 06:25
are more in demand than ever.
06:25 - 06:29
There are many small ways and events can become more sustainable.
06:31 - 06:34
One way that your event can become more sustainable. The easiest way
06:35 - 06:39
is to ensure that there are multiple recycling cans placed all over the event.
06:40 - 06:40
If people see it,
06:40 - 06:44
they're going to use it and it will be better for the environment in the long run.
06:45 - 06:49
Another way that you can do this is by reducing your carbon footprint,
06:50 - 06:54
having more events in local areas, reducing travel,
06:54 - 06:57
um keeping carbon emissions low
06:57 - 06:59
or having more frequent events
06:59 - 07:01
um is a great way to do this as well.
07:02 - 07:07
Another way you can ensure sustainability is using local produce,
07:07 - 07:10
serving local food at your event,
07:10 - 07:13
um collaborating with small businesses to
07:13 - 07:16
make sure that everything is sustainable and
07:16 - 07:18
locally grown is another way to help
07:18 - 07:21
the community and ultimately ensure sustainability.
07:21 - 07:22
In the long run,
07:25 - 07:29
In conclusion, the special events industry is abroad and ever changing one.
07:30 - 07:34
The diversity of the industry is something that's truly beneficial
07:34 - 07:38
and super exciting because something new can be presented every time
07:38 - 07:40
the future is promising,
07:40 - 07:42
and there's so many exciting developments
07:42 - 07:45
taking place in technology and other avenues
07:46 - 07:46
that
07:47 - 07:52
it's really something to learn every day in this industry and ensuring that all
07:52 - 07:55
events are impactful and transformative is the
07:55 - 07:57
key to hosting any successful event.
07:58 - 07:59
Thank you.
