00:00 - 00:01
Hi guys.
00:01 - 00:03
I'm Dr Griffiths, Dr Deborah Griffis.
00:04 - 00:07
Today we're going to talk about a medical problem that
00:07 - 00:10
we can all easily develop if we're not careful and
00:11 - 00:14
don't pay attention to what we eat and how active
00:14 - 00:14
we are.
00:15 - 00:19
In addition to learning some new words today, As I
00:19 - 00:20
said, I'm Dr Griffiths.
00:21 - 00:22
I'm an emergency physician.
00:22 - 00:25
So when I'm in the emergency department, I treat kids.
00:26 - 00:27
I treat adults.
00:28 - 00:31
I treat patients that may have problems because they've made
00:32 - 00:32
bad choices.
00:33 - 00:36
I treat people with bee stings with cuts or or
00:36 - 00:37
brick broken bones.
00:38 - 00:40
But I also treat some people that may have high
00:40 - 00:44
blood pressure, diabetes and things that can come from obesity.
00:45 - 00:49
So today we're going to talk about preventing obesity.
00:50 - 00:53
And when it starts, of course, is sometimes when we're
00:54 - 00:55
Children and when we're young.
00:55 - 00:59
So we're gonna learn today about preventing childhood obesity so
01:00 - 01:03
that we don't develop problems later in life, and we
01:03 - 01:05
can help and prevent those problems.
01:06 - 01:07
So let's start by moving.
01:07 - 01:12
We have an initial video from Black Panther from YouTube,
01:12 - 01:14
and I'd like to share that and have you all
01:14 - 01:16
get up with your parents and your sisters and your
01:16 - 01:17
brothers and let's move.
01:23 - 01:24
How was that, guys?
01:24 - 01:25
Do you have a lot of fun?
01:25 - 01:31
Good. So one and three Children are overweight.
01:32 - 01:35
It's unfortunate, but we all have to deal with it.
01:36 - 01:39
And what we like to do is learn some ways
01:39 - 01:42
today that we can prevent developing obesity.
01:43 - 01:45
Let's talk about what is that?
01:45 - 01:46
What is being overweight?
01:47 - 01:50
It's actually being over and having more weight than we
01:50 - 01:52
should have on our bones and in our bodies.
01:53 - 01:54
So when we go to the doctor, the doctor has
01:55 - 01:57
a tape measure where they measure your heights when you're
01:58 - 01:59
a little baby, and now they probably have you stand
02:00 - 02:01
up and measure your height.
02:01 - 02:04
But they also have a scale where they'll weigh you
02:04 - 02:06
and make sure that you are actually within the average
02:07 - 02:09
range of what you should be for your height and
02:10 - 02:12
your weight for your age and for your sex.
02:13 - 02:16
And so what we'd like to do is make sure,
02:17 - 02:18
and your doctor wants to make sure that you're at
02:18 - 02:20
a healthy weight as you're growing up.
02:25 - 02:29
What things do we do that we can prevent?
02:29 - 02:31
We know what prevention is.
02:31 - 02:33
Prevention is stopping something from happening.
02:34 - 02:37
So every day we do things to prevent things from
02:37 - 02:40
happening, how we prevent ourselves from missing the bus.
02:41 - 02:42
We wake up on time.
02:42 - 02:44
How do we prevent ourselves from getting a bad grade
02:45 - 02:45
at school?
02:45 - 02:46
We study.
02:47 - 02:49
How do we prevent ourselves from getting wet in the
02:49 - 02:50
rain? What?
02:50 - 02:52
We take an umbrella or we have a little hoody
02:53 - 02:53
or a raincoat?
02:54 - 02:57
Correct. So what are some of the things that we
02:57 - 03:00
can do to prevent medical conditions?
03:01 - 03:04
One thing is preventing childhood obesity is what we're talking
03:04 - 03:09
about today, and we can prevent developing conditions like diabetes,
03:10 - 03:13
heart disease, kidney disease and strokes.
03:15 - 03:17
And you probably know some of these things from parents.
03:17 - 03:20
If you have family members that may be, can't use
03:20 - 03:24
an arm or a leg or they can't speak clearly
03:25 - 03:28
because they've had a condition which is called a stroke.
03:28 - 03:30
And a lot of times this has brought on by
03:31 - 03:33
high blood pressure and things that are caused by obesity.
03:39 - 03:43
But if we do prevent childhood obesity, were some of
03:43 - 03:45
the things that we can benefit from that we can
03:45 - 03:49
benefit from strong bones Ah, healthy body, Ah, healthy brain
03:50 - 03:51
and great greats.
03:55 - 03:57
So let's start with our next video and move a
03:57 - 03:59
little bit more and we're gonna use.
03:59 - 04:03
Actually, we're gonna see a YouTube video called Physical Activity
04:03 - 04:05
for Kids and going to do a few more activities
04:06 - 04:07
to move our bodies today.
04:12 - 04:15
How was that Have that cool.
04:16 - 04:18
So what is some of the ways that we can
04:18 - 04:20
practice healthy habits for a healthy body?
04:24 - 04:27
We can start by having and making sure that we
04:27 - 04:34
have smart, healthy food choices, daily exercise and making sure
04:34 - 04:37
that we have 8 to 12 hours of sleep every
04:37 - 04:39
night. So that means listening to your mom and your
04:40 - 04:43
dad when they say no more videos, time to go
04:43 - 04:47
to bed, making sure you do your homework and making
04:47 - 04:48
sure you get to bed so you can rest.
04:50 - 04:52
I think last year we talked about what's the first
04:52 - 04:55
thing you need to start with in the morning to
04:55 - 04:58
make yourself nice, healthy, awake and ready for school.
05:00 - 05:00
You're right.
05:01 - 05:04
Breakfast. So let's take a look at this video from
05:04 - 05:09
YouTube but also talks about making that first healthy choice.
05:11 - 05:12
Don't start your great day without him.
05:13 - 05:13
Right? Breakfast.
05:20 - 05:23
So after you have breakfast, you've done a couple of
05:23 - 05:27
things at school, and now you're ready for a break
05:27 - 05:28
or a snack.
05:28 - 05:30
What are some nice healthy snack choices?
05:32 - 05:40
Fruits, Which could be apples, pears, peaches, oranges, milk, salary,
05:41 - 05:43
vegetables, carrots.
05:43 - 05:45
I want you later to make a list and go
05:45 - 05:49
over those with your teacher, but during the day, there's
05:49 - 05:50
some important things we should do.
05:50 - 05:52
We should have three healthy meals per day.
05:53 - 05:58
One the two snacks per day and make sure when
05:58 - 06:01
you're eating that you're knowing what you're eating.
06:01 - 06:02
So read the labels.
06:02 - 06:04
If you get a snack bar, read the label and
06:04 - 06:06
know how much sugar is in here.
06:06 - 06:07
How much fat is in here?
06:07 - 06:09
Is this something that's really good for me to eat
06:09 - 06:10
or not?
06:10 - 06:12
When you go to the store with your parents, read
06:13 - 06:15
labels and make sure you're helping your mom and your
06:15 - 06:16
dad make healthy.
06:16 - 06:19
Grocery choice is, and also make sure that you're helping
06:19 - 06:20
your parents plan bills.
06:21 - 06:24
So plan some healthy meals, maybe help your mom or
06:24 - 06:25
dad cook healthy meals.
06:26 - 06:32
Okay, what are some bad food choices?
06:33 - 06:36
We all know those because we all love bad food
06:36 - 06:37
choices, even me.
06:38 - 06:41
So my favorite is chocolate or chocolate chip cookies or
06:42 - 06:46
cake, but pizza, ice cream, hamburgers, fries.
06:47 - 06:50
We can eat them sometimes, but we can't make those
06:50 - 06:52
bad choices all the times or else we're not healthy.
06:53 - 06:53
Is that right?
06:55 - 06:56
Alright, so go over some of those with your teacher
06:57 - 07:02
also. So what are some good food choices from our
07:02 - 07:02
food groups?
07:03 - 07:06
We can look at this plate and see that the
07:06 - 07:11
food groups and they are proteins, vegetables, fruit and dairy.
07:12 - 07:13
What if some grains?
07:15 - 07:18
That's bread, oatmeal, cereal, rice.
07:18 - 07:22
Those air grains that you can eat proteins are meats,
07:23 - 07:29
poultry, fish, nuts, tofu, beans, eggs.
07:30 - 07:31
And, if you're vegetarian, those air.
07:31 - 07:31
Other options.
07:32 - 07:34
Tofu, beans and eggs for you.
07:34 - 07:34
Toe protein.
07:35 - 07:37
What are some vegetables that we all love?
07:38 - 07:42
Broccoli, green beans, peas, lettuce and corn.
07:43 - 07:45
There are many more that you can write down with
07:45 - 07:47
your teacher, some options or fruits that we've already talked
07:48 - 07:52
about. Her apples, oranges, pears, mangoes, grapes, kiwi.
07:53 - 07:55
You can eat all kinds of fruits and the dairy
07:56 - 07:59
options or milk cheese yogurt, but many more that I
07:59 - 08:01
know you can come up with and even ice cream
08:01 - 08:02
is a dairy option.
08:02 - 08:03
But not for all the time.
08:07 - 08:08
So what?
08:09 - 08:11
In addition to making healthy food choices, what should we
08:11 - 08:14
do? We should exercise every day at least 60 minutes
08:15 - 08:19
per day or for five days a week or 75
08:20 - 08:21
minutes for three days a week.
08:21 - 08:23
And you can do this with your parents with your
08:23 - 08:25
sisters, with your brother at school.
08:25 - 08:28
But we need to get in 300 minutes per week,
08:28 - 08:30
so sometimes it's good to write it on your phone
08:31 - 08:31
on your notes.
08:32 - 08:35
Write it down in a book or a tablet.
08:36 - 08:38
Maybe you can even make a board that you all
08:38 - 08:42
have it home, and you all make a competition at
08:42 - 08:45
home between your family, your parents, you relatives and make
08:46 - 08:50
sure that you're all exercising and making sure you're getting
08:50 - 08:51
in those 300 minutes.
08:51 - 08:53
So let's do a little more exercise.
08:53 - 08:56
Now. We're gonna look at another video from YouTube, which
08:56 - 08:59
is, kids work out for legs and back.
09:04 - 09:04
How is that?
09:05 - 09:06
Lots of fun.
09:06 - 09:08
Sometimes you get a little bit tired, but you have
09:08 - 09:09
to keep going.
09:10 - 09:13
So physical activity with that physical activity, what does that
09:14 - 09:16
do? We can develop better grades.
09:17 - 09:18
We have better attendance at school.
09:19 - 09:21
It helps with our memory, and it also helps with
09:21 - 09:22
our health.
09:27 - 09:28
There are five steps to being healthy.
09:30 - 09:30
Can we go over?
09:31 - 09:33
These one is move every day.
09:34 - 09:38
Try new fruits and vegetables every day, drink lots of
09:38 - 09:42
water. You can do jumping taps or any kind of
09:42 - 09:47
exercise. I mean, it could be push ups, um, planks,
09:49 - 09:49
arm circles.
09:51 - 09:52
But do something either.
09:52 - 09:54
When you're doing your homework when you're taking a break
09:55 - 09:56
from your homework, when you just need to get up
09:56 - 10:00
and walk around and help make dinner, help make lunch.
10:01 - 10:02
Help your parents shop.
10:03 - 10:06
But these air simple ways to help develop a healthy
10:07 - 10:09
body and keep healthy.
10:10 - 10:10
Uh huh.
10:11 - 10:12
So let's look at this.
10:13 - 10:18
Our prior first lady, Michelle Obama was very active with
10:18 - 10:21
making sure that we all moved our bodies and trying
10:22 - 10:23
to prevent childhood obesity.
10:24 - 10:26
So let's take a look at her video that talks
10:26 - 10:31
about eat right eating right and being active, develop, help
10:32 - 10:33
the body to develop a healthy body.
10:37 - 10:38
Wasn't that really cool?
10:40 - 10:42
One of the last things I'd like to go over
10:42 - 10:46
with you is the last YouTube video, and it looks
10:46 - 10:50
at meditation and relaxing your body after you've done all
10:51 - 10:53
your exercise, or even in the morning before you're going
10:53 - 10:54
to school or before you're going to bed.
10:55 - 10:58
It's always nice to relax your mind and after you've
10:59 - 11:00
exercised to relax your mind.
11:01 - 11:04
So this is a body scan meditation, and it's a
11:04 - 11:05
mindfulness boot camp.
11:06 - 11:09
So let's take a few moments, do this routine, and
11:09 - 11:11
then after that, I want you to be prepared to
11:11 - 11:12
get back to all of your work in school.
11:13 - 11:18
And remember, healthy habits and a healthy body can prevent
11:18 - 11:19
childhood obesity.
11:20 - 11:22
And that's one of the things I want you to
11:22 - 11:22
always remember.
11:23 - 11:24
The doctor, Griff has told you.
11:24 - 11:29
Eat healthy, stay active and prevent childhood obesity.
11:31 - 11:31
Thanks a lot.
