00:00 - 00:02
Good afternoon. My name is Carla Lander.
00:02 - 00:07
And the disease I am going to be talking about today is going to be Zika virus.
00:09 - 00:13
So let's actually start off on what is Zika virus.
00:15 - 00:20
So Zika virus is a viral disease also known as Zika
00:20 - 00:20
Beam
00:21 - 00:22
and it's mosquito borne.
00:23 - 00:25
So for those of you that don't know,
00:25 - 00:29
mosquito borne just means diseases that are caused
00:29 - 00:31
by the bite of an infected mosquito.
00:32 - 00:35
So it's important to try and avoid areas where
00:35 - 00:40
there is a lot of insects to try and prevent yourself from getting bitten.
00:41 - 00:43
Um You could use bug spray.
00:43 - 00:48
Um We could talk about other ways later on on how to prevent getting Zika virus.
00:54 - 00:56
So next, let's talk about etiology
00:57 - 00:58
and it's
00:58 - 01:01
just the cause or causes of a disease.
01:01 - 01:04
In this case, it's gonna be the cause and causes of
01:05 - 01:06
Zika virus.
01:09 - 01:10
So
01:10 - 01:13
the cause of Zika virus um
01:13 - 01:14
is by
01:15 - 01:18
infected mosquitoes, more specifically
01:18 - 01:21
aids species of mosquito
01:21 - 01:26
in which they are out throughout the day, during the day, night, afternoon.
01:28 - 01:29
Um
01:29 - 01:30
And
01:31 - 01:32
since they are
01:33 - 01:34
out throughout the day,
01:35 - 01:38
it's important to try and be careful
01:38 - 01:43
um and check what areas you are visiting if you are traveling.
01:47 - 01:52
So next we could talk about the mechanism of transmission.
01:53 - 01:56
So Zika virus is mostly spread by a bite
01:56 - 02:00
of an infected mosquito as we talked about before.
02:01 - 02:05
But for those who are pregnant and who are infected by
02:06 - 02:08
Zika virus,
02:08 - 02:13
it can be transmitted from the pregnant woman to her fetus, which isn't good.
02:14 - 02:15
Also,
02:15 - 02:18
um a mechanism of transmission can be
02:18 - 02:22
from sexual intercourse from an infected person to
02:23 - 02:27
a healthy individual who isn't infected. It could be their partner.
02:31 - 02:38
Next, we are going to be talking about signs and symptoms of the Zika virus.
02:41 - 02:42
So
02:43 - 02:47
some symptoms can be fever, headache,
02:47 - 02:51
rashes, joint pain, muscle, pain, red eyes.
02:51 - 02:55
And although most people infected with Zika virus will have symptoms,
02:55 - 02:57
some people might only experience
02:57 - 02:59
a mild symptoms.
03:00 - 03:03
But for those who are pregnant and get
03:04 - 03:05
the Zika virus
03:05 - 03:11
that can lead to birth defects in their fetus. And these symptoms can last
03:12 - 03:13
2 to 7 days
03:15 - 03:16
if you are infected.
03:23 - 03:28
Next, let's talk about diagnosis and how to be diagnosed with Zika virus.
03:28 - 03:29
So,
03:33 - 03:34
um
03:34 - 03:36
if that person
03:37 - 03:42
in particular, if a person still feels sick sick after a few days of
03:42 - 03:45
having um the Zika virus symptoms,
03:46 - 03:49
um seeing a doctor is recommended
03:49 - 03:53
and there they could ask for a blood test or a urine test
03:53 - 03:57
to help determine if the person is infected with Zika virus or not.
04:05 - 04:08
So, here are important ways on how to prevent
04:09 - 04:10
getting Zika virus
04:11 - 04:12
So,
04:12 - 04:13
um
04:14 - 04:19
avoiding mosquitoes is going to be the hardest thing to do since
04:19 - 04:23
we, there's insects all over wherever you go.
04:24 - 04:29
But a way to prevent mosquitoes, um getting bitten by mosquito bites
04:29 - 04:32
are wearing clothes that cover your whole body
04:32 - 04:35
and to prevent it from being transmitted
04:35 - 04:39
through sexual intercourse will be wearing condoms
04:40 - 04:44
because they reduce the chance of getting Zika through sexual intercourse.
04:44 - 04:47
And this can include a male and female condoms.
04:48 - 04:49
Either or
04:54 - 04:57
next, we could talk about treatments. So
04:58 - 05:02
there is currently no vaccine or medicine to treat Zika virus.
05:02 - 05:05
But here are some recommendations that
05:05 - 05:07
you can do
05:07 - 05:13
to help you feel better if you do have Zika virus. So,
05:13 - 05:17
drinking fluids, um this can be water juice, um
05:17 - 05:21
anything just so it could prevent from dehydration
05:21 - 05:23
while you are feeling the symptoms.
05:24 - 05:26
Another thing you can take is Tylenol.
05:26 - 05:29
This can help reduce the fever as well as the pain,
05:29 - 05:34
which include a muscle pain and joint pain from the symptoms listed
05:34 - 05:35
earlier.
05:43 - 05:46
Next, let's talk about prognosis. So
05:46 - 05:52
what is prognosis? So, prognosis is the likely outcome or cause of a disease.
05:56 - 05:57
So
05:58 - 06:00
some outcomes or um
06:01 - 06:05
or cause of a disease for Zika virus is going to be
06:06 - 06:08
pregnancy problems if the person infected
06:09 - 06:10
is pregnant.
06:10 - 06:11
So
06:12 - 06:14
with that being said,
06:14 - 06:19
it can cause birth defects like we talked about um a few slides ago
06:20 - 06:24
um which can be dangerous for both the mother and the fetus.
06:25 - 06:28
It could also cause Guilin Boris syndrome
06:30 - 06:31
and this syndrome
06:32 - 06:34
is sickness of the nervous system.
06:36 - 06:38
Um this can lead to the immune system,
06:38 - 06:43
damaging the nerve cells and then causing muscle weakness
06:43 - 06:46
and sometimes can cause paralysis.
06:48 - 06:53
In rare cases, it can affect the brain by swelling
06:54 - 06:58
by your brain, um being swelled up as well as the spinal cord
06:58 - 07:00
and can also lead to a blood disorder.
07:02 - 07:06
And when having blood disorder, it can then lead to bleeding,
07:06 - 07:09
slow blood clotting and bruising,
07:09 - 07:10
which isn't good.
07:15 - 07:16
So occurrence.
07:16 - 07:21
So the last confirmed case in the United States territories,
07:21 - 07:25
which ever one is going to be in 2019.
07:25 - 07:29
And ever since then, there hasn't been um a case reported.
07:29 - 07:32
So in this picture, we can actually see
07:33 - 07:34
um
07:34 - 07:40
where the cases were being reported. So in the US, um there was cases
07:40 - 07:43
from Zika virus previously
07:43 - 07:47
but since there is any, there isn't any red marks, there hasn't been
07:48 - 07:50
um a current case which is good.
07:55 - 07:57
So just a summary of what I talked about.
07:57 - 08:02
So the Zika virus is a viral disease that is a mosquito borne
08:02 - 08:06
and ways on how to prevent that is going to be
08:06 - 08:07
to
08:07 - 08:11
having to wearing clothes that cover your whole body
08:11 - 08:16
to avoid areas that have had current cases.
08:16 - 08:17
And
08:18 - 08:20
some symptoms that you might want to consider
08:21 - 08:25
going to the hospital will be fever, joint pain, muscle pain,
08:26 - 08:27
um
08:27 - 08:30
headache, rashes, red eyes
08:31 - 08:33
and treatments would be
08:34 - 08:36
to take Tylenol and stay hydrated
08:37 - 08:44
and so far for occurrence, there hasn't been any recent cases since 2019
08:49 - 08:51
and here are my references
08:53 - 08:55
and that's all. Thank you.
