  1. it's as rigorous as it is beautiful and it utilizes
  2. your entire body while still looking effortless.
  3. My name is Robin.
  4. I'm 24 years old and I'm currently a ballet instructor.
  5. I danced ballet personally from the ages of 9-18.
  6. And these are my ballet shoes that I wear when
  7. I am teaching ballet now.
  8. Um they look small but they fit on my feet
  9. like glove while still giving me a little bit of
  10. support in the balls of my feet and my heels.
  11. Okay. Uh huh.
  12. Did you know that ballet turns out some of the
  13. strongest of athletes rivaling the strength of some traditional athletes
  14. such as swimmers.
  15. The basics of ballet start in its position.
  16. Its feet positions, its arm positions and it's ballet moves.
  17. So here we have our basic feet positions.
  18. We have our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th positions
  19. and we have our arms which is called our court
  20. abroad to match our feet positions.
  21. We have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.
  22. And together these um combined into your basic ballet technique.
  23. And here we have some of our basic value moves
  24. that you move throughout the transition from one move to
  25. another with your play a DJ run jump and positive
  26. balance. And this girl here is balancing very gracefully in
  27. a plastic bag.
  28. Someone can have excellent technique, but if they don't have
  29. artistry then they might be very boring to watch on
  30. stage artistry is embedded within your techniques such as head
  31. placement with where your arms are going.
  32. This girl is looking ever so slightly over her shoulder
  33. and if she was looking just straightforward it might be
  34. a little bit more boring of a post.
  35. Yeah, timing is also essential to ballet dancers.
  36. We learn how to count the music that we're dancing
  37. to and if we uh it helps us to know
  38. when to start dancing, went to stop dancing which parts
  39. we can take longer on or which parts.
  40. We need to speed up.
  41. Many people think that ballet is rigid because of its
  42. direct training, but um facial expressions are very important on
  43. stage as well.
  44. Um Since dancers don't talk on stage, facial expressions are
  45. very important to be able to communicate with your audience.
  46. Mhm. Combining technique and artistry comes with a lot of
  47. strength. Many dancers will cross train in a gym or
  48. on their own time to be able to gain strength
  49. in even different body parts that they embody muscles that
  50. they didn't know they had.
  51. Um As is the stereotype, the mobility that ballet requires
  52. dancers. Um To be able to use strength to say
  53. hold their head their leg above their head.
  54. Um For example, and that not only takes time muscle
  55. but back and bum muscle as well.
  56. Dancers who dance on pointe need to have strength not
  57. only in their feet, but in their calves, thighs, hips,
  58. back, core, just to name a little bit, but it
  59. takes a lot of strength to be able to dance
  60. on such a small area.
  61. Ballet dancers, especially male ballet dancers need to also have
  62. strength to be able to partner um a female partner
  63. or any other partner.
  64. Um And female dancers need to have the strength to
  65. be able to hold themselves in a position above someone
  66. else's head or and have the mental strength to be
  67. able to trust somebody to hold them above their heads.
  68. Ballet is as rigorous as it is beautiful.
  69. The training of ballet dancers is with any sport extremely
  70. rigorous. What many people do not see are the hours,
  71. weeks and years of training that ballet Comes with until
  72. it becomes 2nd nature for dancers.
  73. It's so important to them to have a strong foundation
  74. to build on.
  75. So that's why it takes so many years for ballet
  76. dancers to become professionals in the competitive dance world.
  77. I hope the speech has given you a little bit
  78. of insight into what it is to be about a
  79. dancer and how dancers work for what they love.
