  1. Hi, My name is Kylie J.
  2. Marco, and I'm a sophomore here at N Y.
  3. U at Tisch Drama and the Playwrights Horizons Theater studio.
  4. And today I would like to take a few minutes
  5. of your time to discuss the importance of the best
  6. medicine or the actors guide to the best medicine and
  7. goal setting and mental health advocacy in the entertainment industry
  8. and positive psychology and how that could improve the way
  9. the youth enters this world.
  10. Now, as a young actor, I am so, so, so
  11. excited to enter this industry.
  12. But I do have a few fears because of the
  13. way we perceive it from the outside.
  14. So let's delve into that.
  15. We're all Spectators.
  16. So what do we see from the outside?
  17. What is perceived in the media?
  18. Well, for example, here's a few examples, but we can
  19. also just look at them through the lens of our
  20. own phone or through our computers or any social media
  21. standing. Why do we praise actors and entertainers for these
  22. kinds of representation?
  23. But why do we shame them on the other side
  24. of the camera?
  25. Do the common framework of the media Society has placed
  26. standards on what we see in front of the camera
  27. versus what we see behind the scenes.
  28. It's a picking and choosing battle with media.
  29. However, the biggest issue is that that we tend to
  30. focus on the image of the entertainer, then the values
  31. and struggles they may be facing elsewhere in this already
  32. toxic industry about image, we have to find a way
  33. to break the stigma surrounding images of body class, racial
  34. issues and, most importantly to myself, mental health and wellness.
  35. As a young actor heading into this industry in just
  36. a few short years, it is vital that the industry
  37. is progressing now, taking steps forwards rather than taking steps
  38. backwards. That way, we can allow more artists like myself
  39. and the other people of fish in N.
  40. Y. U and as a whole toe enter this industry
  41. safely and comforted by the other workers in the industry
  42. and present our work and artistry worldwide without judgment.
  43. Let's talk about the potentials and goal setting for entertainment
  44. industry workers and also actors like myself.
  45. So one of the biggest things we talked about in
  46. science of happiness at N.
  47. Y. U.
  48. Is the idea of Perma Perma is an acronym.
  49. Actually, Herma stands for positive emotion, engagement, positive relationships, meaning
  50. an accomplishment.
  51. Now I want to talk about accomplishments and meaning.
  52. I focus on these two subjects very personally as an
  53. actor because they mean the most to me in my
  54. work and how I will be entering this industry as
  55. well as many other young actors, actresses and artists.
  56. So let's talk about that.
  57. What I really want to focus on in meaning is
  58. the idea of signature strengths and how do we pull
  59. from that is actors and artists in this industry.
  60. Some of my positive strength that I found from the
  61. Positive Strength survey was that one of my best ones
  62. was kindness and giving back to others.
  63. And how can I influence that?
  64. My acting in my artwork now and many of the
  65. pieces I've written I've talked about kindness in many ways
  66. in many ways, with positive relationships is well with the
  67. characters I create, and also with a lot of storylines
  68. that I developed.
  69. But meaning also has to do with a lot of
  70. how we lead our lives in this industry.
  71. How do we influence kindness and signature other signature strengths
  72. into the industry as a whole.
  73. One way to do that would be implementing goal setting
  74. with our signature strengths.
  75. For example, I'm going to use kindness again.
  76. But we could use kindness to promote better positive emotion
  77. for the community that we work around us.
  78. Ah, film crew has tons of people on it, so
  79. it is so important to engage with everyone who is
  80. contributing to the film.
  81. Or may it be it a theater crew as well.
  82. So one of the biggest strategies I views is giving
  83. back and gratitude and also doing things out of the
  84. kindness of my heart.
  85. Whether that be grabbing coffee instead of having the coffee
  86. person run for it, bringing breakfast for the director, or
  87. even spending time with fellow actors and extras.
  88. We don't necessarily get the same screen thymus others, and
  89. just being able to make those bonds and relationships will
  90. improve your industry connection and improve your mental well being
  91. on set.
  92. I'm hoping that whatever strength that you play Thio will
  93. benefit you in the way that you create relationships and
  94. connections with your fellow cast and crew to endure a
  95. very great process I think that if we do this
  96. in the process of different films and new things, that
  97. air coming along in the future, we can provide a
  98. better and safer environment for the youth to enter into
  99. and introduce youth into film.
  100. Or one of my favorite examples of this cast bonding
  101. exercise is what they did on the set of it.
  102. The new Chapter, one movie that they did.
  103. I believe it was 2017, um, and that featured Finn
  104. Wolf hard and a bunch of other crazy, amazing youth
  105. actors. And the reason that the performance was so so
  106. great was because the directors actually implemented quite a few
  107. bonding exercises that were given to give back to each
  108. other to be able to interact with each other more
  109. positively with their signature strengths both as characters, actors and
  110. his people in humans.
  111. Today, they're still lifelong friends.
  112. Let's dive into accomplishment now.
  113. Accomplishment is something we can totally be proud of, especially
  114. in this industry.
  115. Just by accomplishing itself tape.
  116. That's a huge step in itself.
  117. We have to be able to allow ourselves, um, praise
  118. for that, so in goal setting in this industry, we
  119. should allow ourselves some sort of praise Prezi.
  120. May it be like I said, with self tapes or
  121. even booking a role celebrating others as well as ourselves
  122. is so important that we raise each other up rather
  123. than bring each other down.
  124. Because that's the reason why these mental stigmas and things
  125. going around with body image, racial issues, class, even mental
  126. health awareness and body image, just like I said, has
  127. been a knish you in societies because other actors tend
  128. to bring each other down for us, a competition when
  129. in reality Thea art industry is working together as a
  130. whole. So accomplishing things and celebrating each other's accomplishments is
  131. so vital to the importance of this industry, a great
  132. way to accomplish things together, celebrate accomplishments, is having cast
  133. parties or celebrating things together after things were done or
  134. things, or being in the process of something.
  135. So if you're working on the scene with someone, for
  136. example, it would be good to go out and get
  137. coffee with that person and accomplish a few things at
  138. a time either seen work or monologue, work or character
  139. framing either or whatever you choose, you should be able
  140. to celebrate each other's accomplishments through that and also help
  141. each other build up to those different levels of accomplishment
  142. as well as bonus.
  143. I would love to also offer my thoughts about well,
  144. being as a goal in accomplishment.
  145. I think that it's so vital as an actor or
  146. an artist all around that you take care of yourself
  147. physically and mentally.
  148. So if this is an individual introspection, especially during this
  149. world of zoom age, of acting, where we're all online
  150. and virtually working and trying to get jobs and experimenting
  151. with different types of theater online or film online, it's
  152. so important that we also take care of ourselves behind
  153. the scenes to do our best work in front of
  154. the camera.
  155. For me, one of the best things has been able
  156. to get physical activity or exercise outside of the camera
  157. or outside of the performative realm.
  158. So one of the biggest goals that I love to
  159. accomplish each week is that I do about Ah, 1000
  160. calories at the gym.
  161. That means I either walk, dance, do exercises on the
  162. floor, find a buddy toe, work with whatever that maybe
  163. that helps you promote your well being in the way
  164. you feel about yourself is always beneficial and always promotes
  165. the best meaning as well.
  166. For your positive strengths and attributes, I would love to
  167. touch really quickly as well on about three idea of
  168. being an ensemble, and how would we celebrate each other?
  169. Accomplishing things as an ensemble ensemble is a group of
  170. people who work together to create the facility and the
  171. almost the working house, like the mitochondria of the of
  172. the player production you may be putting on.
  173. So, for example, a lot of actors on Broadway working
  174. ensemble of dancers or singers, or whatever it may be,
  175. so one of the best exercises to work with both
  176. meaning and accomplishment would be to engage in practicing dance
  177. or practicing different ways of bonding through dance and finding
  178. different emotions to feel through that dance.
  179. And one of the best things about an ensemble pieces
  180. that you're all working together to achieve.
  181. The same goal.
  182. I'm so glad I got to talk to you about
  183. the potentials of Perma and the ideas of meaning and
  184. accomplishments with actors in this industry, and now I want
  185. to talk about a little bit of who's already working
  186. at that, a ZX We, the youth, are starting to
  187. enter it.
  188. Here are just a few incredible advocates for mental health
  189. and recognition in the industry.
  190. Right now, I have a few up here Lili Reinhart,
  191. Kendrick Lamar, Jim Carrey.
  192. Thousands of others can be included in this.
  193. However, I wanted to focus on these ones specifically because
  194. they have a lot of meaning to me.
  195. Is an actor growing up?
  196. I watched so much media talk about these people so
  197. horribly and in the reality of things they weren't focusing
  198. on what was going on behind the scenes that was
  199. bringing their potential to the camera on dhe.
  200. That would be their advocacy and mental health and mental
  201. well being as well as physical well being in the
  202. top. I have artist and actor Jim Carey who struggles
  203. with bipolar disorder and depression, and he had a really
  204. valuable Ted talk that I watched recently that talks about
  205. the importance is of advocating for mental health and speaking
  206. openly about it to their fellow cast members.
  207. By doing so, were able to accomplish such a more
  208. accepting a community of actors and artists that can advocate
  209. for the youth entering into this world by knowing that
  210. we're not alone in this when we enter in.
  211. No, it's totally certifies and validates the feelings we have
  212. in the stigmas we have that have surrounded us our
  213. whole lives, in the media and how do we break
  214. them? Has been such a kn important deal for all
  215. of these advocates to touch on something a little more
  216. personal. I was really touched by Lili Reinhart Story here
  217. on the far right, my far right.
  218. Or maybe you're far left of the computer screen.
  219. Lili Reinhart talked openly about her to struggles with depression,
  220. ing anxiety and a few Twitter threads, as well as
  221. Instagram Post talking about her worries about her body image
  222. in the media and how she's perceived, and how she
  223. should talk about mental health and what's too far and
  224. and what's too much to say and what makes her
  225. perceived differently in the media.
  226. But honestly, she was so kind hearted and talked about
  227. it so so honestly that it made me feel less
  228. alone in my struggles that I have struggled with today
  229. and as a child as well.
  230. Let's talk about accomplishment again with Perma and body image
  231. and what Lili Reinhart touched upon as well as Demi
  232. Lovato in the bottom.
  233. We want to focus on a better way.
  234. We view body image in the media, and how do
  235. we do this?
  236. Well, let's start by promoting the fact that all bodies
  237. air different and all bodies are normal.
  238. We have to take care of ourselves.
  239. However, what makes us healthiest and our best performance and
  240. best potential is by caring for ourselves and being able
  241. to communicate what is wrong and what we need to
  242. help ourselves and help each other by promoting better body
  243. image and better positivity towards everybody.
  244. Type weaken.
  245. Do that.
  246. However, if we stay in this stigma of skinny is
  247. the best or having curves is frowned upon, we can't
  248. progress any far forward.
  249. So implementing more images like this in the media who
  250. also speak upon it are so, so impactful for myself
  251. and others.
  252. I hope I didn't take up too much of your
  253. time, but I'm so, so glad that you got to
  254. join me on this little Perma rant about the best
  255. medicine, the entertainment industry and the positive psychology behind it.
  256. Now let's find the best medicine for you as a
  257. young actor, artists or actress.
  258. I hope that you've had a lovely evening or morning
  259. or night.
  260. I hope that you are having a lovely year.
  261. And I hope that this semester brings up lots of
  262. joy. Next year.
  263. Happy New Year and Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays.
  264. Thank you.
  265. Have a great night.
