00:01 - 00:03
Hi, My name is Rachel Benway, and today we discussing
00:04 - 00:08
my turning points practicum that I did this semester with
00:08 - 00:08
the Allens Center.
00:10 - 00:13
So my learning goals when I started all of this
00:13 - 00:17
in mid January or to better understand the population of
00:17 - 00:19
students that I was working with because I have never
00:19 - 00:23
worked with students who were quote student leaders and anybody
00:24 - 00:28
who had failed a class in any, um, kind of
00:28 - 00:30
understanding what failing class means, and I wanted to become
00:31 - 00:34
more knowledgeable of Resource is at Ohio University because I
00:34 - 00:36
came in knowing absolutely nothing.
00:36 - 00:39
At least I thought, and I also wanted to apply
00:40 - 00:42
a developmental theory to a student, And I also wanted
00:43 - 00:46
to journal about my experiences and my personal feelings after
00:46 - 00:47
each meeting.
00:50 - 00:52
So my responsibilities throughout this part to come, where to
00:52 - 00:55
meet with four students weekly at least or at most
00:56 - 00:59
an hour and attend to staff meeting with the rest
00:59 - 01:03
of the graduate assistants in the Allen Center and their
01:04 - 01:07
supervisors. And so I would go for about half an
01:07 - 01:10
hour each week and just talk about turning points and
01:10 - 01:12
had a better server students and do really cute and
01:12 - 01:17
fun, um, little ice breakers and then communicate with my
01:17 - 01:20
supervisor, who is Antony Kludd and I just adore her,
01:20 - 01:22
and we've gotten to know each other a little bit
01:22 - 01:25
through this experience, and she's been really helpful because I've
01:25 - 01:26
done nothing like this before.
01:28 - 01:30
And then also my responsibility was to share notes about
01:30 - 01:33
the weak and how I felt and how my students
01:34 - 01:37
kind of succeeded throughout the week or had some setbacks.
01:41 - 01:44
Some activities that I did with my students during our
01:44 - 01:47
weekly meetings, which again, at most or an hour, Um,
01:48 - 01:52
but they kind of, you know, varied how long they
01:52 - 01:54
would last, depending on what the student needed that week.
01:54 - 01:57
So we would do study skills and we would work
01:57 - 01:57
on motivation.
01:58 - 02:00
And I would make sure to encourage my students to
02:00 - 02:01
talk to professors.
02:02 - 02:05
They were not comfortable doing this at the beginning of
02:05 - 02:08
our time together, because that is really not what they've
02:08 - 02:11
done in the past and not where they kind of
02:11 - 02:12
saw themselves.
02:12 - 02:14
And so making sure that they were talking with their
02:14 - 02:19
professors or there's ah t A's or maybe even getting
02:19 - 02:22
a tutor, and so just making sure that communication is
02:22 - 02:25
open. And then we did a lot of journaling exercises.
02:26 - 02:29
Three of my four students really thrived and really enjoyed
02:30 - 02:32
writing and kind of sitting with their thoughts and making
02:33 - 02:35
sure that they could have time to reflect and also
02:36 - 02:39
to grow and recognizing that one of my biggest things
02:39 - 02:42
this semester was put to them.
02:42 - 02:45
Just say, Hey, what do you need to say right
02:45 - 02:47
now? And I can or cannot respond And they really
02:48 - 02:52
kind of love that because that again made no expectation
02:52 - 02:55
for me and for them, and I could kind of
02:55 - 02:55
just go with it.
02:56 - 02:58
And then also in that if it was a negative
02:59 - 03:02
feeling or a positive feeling, reminding them that it's good
03:02 - 03:05
and helpful to sit in those feelings and to feel
03:06 - 03:09
their success because each of them had different successes along
03:09 - 03:09
the way.
03:10 - 03:12
And then we also had a lot of emotional conversations,
03:13 - 03:16
both good and bad again, a lot of them their
03:16 - 03:17
first week.
03:17 - 03:18
They were like, just so you know, I have super
03:18 - 03:21
stubborn and so that was a little nerve racking for
03:22 - 03:25
me. But we moved on and, um, I saw the
03:25 - 03:27
stubbornness, but we were able to work through it together
03:27 - 03:30
and then also again to remind them to sit in
03:31 - 03:32
the good that they were feeling.
03:32 - 03:35
And we did interactive videos while we were meeting in
03:35 - 03:38
person. Um, the Turning Points website has a lot that
03:38 - 03:42
was ableto help lead our meetings and then helping them
03:42 - 03:44
understand blackboard and Dar's.
03:44 - 03:47
Because again, while I'm treating these students holistically and making
03:48 - 03:52
sure they're good on multiple different, um, levels of success,
03:53 - 03:56
it's also really important for them to get reinstated to
03:56 - 03:58
the university and to make sure that they're on the
03:59 - 03:59
right track.
03:59 - 04:04
We used blackboard and ours and then to finish off
04:04 - 04:07
my lessons that I personally learned throughout this experiences were
04:08 - 04:11
to be my students where they are, because again, I've
04:11 - 04:14
never been in this situation personally, and so it was
04:14 - 04:15
really important for me.
04:15 - 04:18
Thio kind of sit with them and move along how
04:18 - 04:20
they wanted Thio and to help them how they want,
04:21 - 04:23
not how I want, because two of my students are
04:24 - 04:26
very similar to me and the other two were not,
04:26 - 04:28
and so just making sure that I was helping them
04:29 - 04:31
in their best interest was really important for me and
04:32 - 04:34
I won't be everyone's favorite now.
04:34 - 04:37
Of course, I already knew this, but I never really
04:37 - 04:38
thought of it in the idea of students.
04:39 - 04:41
And so that was kind of what I was working
04:41 - 04:44
through this semester, because the way that I use mentors
04:45 - 04:49
or advisers, um, is very different than my students do.
04:49 - 04:51
And again, that was part of the reason they don't
04:51 - 04:52
like asking for help.
04:53 - 04:54
So and I do.
04:54 - 04:57
And so working through that together was interesting and then
04:58 - 04:59
academic advising is not scary.
05:00 - 05:03
I always think that it is because academics are intense,
05:04 - 05:05
but it really isn't.
05:05 - 05:08
Especially once I had the right information and I could.
05:08 - 05:10
I learned from the mistakes that I might have made
05:11 - 05:11
and help them.
05:12 - 05:14
And then students who feel classes are not bad.
05:14 - 05:15
They just had bad times.
05:16 - 05:19
Um, the way that I was welcomed into the program
05:20 - 05:23
was with really hard truths, and so I was kind
05:23 - 05:23
of nervous.
05:23 - 05:26
But once I met my students, none of those truths
05:26 - 05:27
were true for my students.
05:28 - 05:32
And so just making sure that I know to come
05:32 - 05:35
into a situation with unopened mind has been really important,
05:36 - 05:38
especially in the eyes of students, but even more so
05:39 - 05:42
students who might have had ah ah, harder Shell or
05:43 - 05:44
someone who has fallen on harder times.
05:45 - 05:49
So this is my recap of my practicum this semester.
05:50 - 05:52
I really enjoyed it, and I really loved getting to
05:52 - 05:55
know my students and getting to dive into academic advising
05:56 - 05:59
and big old fan of the Allen Center and all
05:59 - 06:03
those who work there, and that's all I got subscribe
06:03 - 06:04
to my channel.
