00:00 - 00:01
Hello,
00:01 - 00:04
My name is William Gunter and my papers over strategies
00:04 - 00:06
for maintaining effective human resource
00:06 - 00:09
management practices during a recession.
00:09 - 00:11
Why did I pick this topic?
00:11 - 00:11
Well,
00:11 - 00:15
I'm 40 years old and I can name three
00:15 - 00:18
different economic downturns that has happened during my lifetime,
00:18 - 00:22
the first being the late 19 nineties dot com bubble bursting
00:22 - 00:23
The next.
00:23 - 00:25
The 2008 housing crisis,
00:25 - 00:30
which did have a personal impact on my life and my family's life.
00:30 - 00:34
My eye and my wife both got laid off during that time
00:34 - 00:37
And the current COVID-19 pandemic.
00:37 - 00:40
With the way the economy is after the lockdowns
00:40 - 00:44
and supply chain issues that we're currently experiencing,
00:44 - 00:47
it's important to know what a recession is.
00:47 - 00:51
The recession, put simply, is a decline in economic activity.
00:51 - 00:56
A little more in depth explanation is that a recession
00:56 - 01:01
is when a nation's economy experiences negative gross domestic product,
01:01 - 01:05
rising levels of unemployment and falling retail sales.
01:06 - 01:10
Unfortunately, recessions can lead to people losing their jobs.
01:10 - 01:12
As you can see in this picture below,
01:13 - 01:16
what impact does this have on a business?
01:17 - 01:21
Well, impacts on the business can be multiple things,
01:21 - 01:25
but I've put four different large impacts on all businesses right here,
01:25 - 01:27
which is reduced cash flow,
01:28 - 01:29
staffing reduction,
01:29 - 01:31
a loss of demand on the product
01:31 - 01:33
in marketing constraints.
01:33 - 01:39
These kind of all go hand in hand that if a business has a reduced cash flow,
01:39 - 01:43
they will not be able to pay for marketing or advertising,
01:43 - 01:46
which could lead to a loss of demand of the product,
01:46 - 01:50
which could lead to less cash flow again and
01:50 - 01:53
having to reduce staff or potentially the business closing.
01:53 - 01:55
That's you can see below.
01:57 - 02:03
What role will HR have during a recession or issues that may be posed for HR?
02:04 - 02:06
Well, as we've learned in our books,
02:06 - 02:10
human resources executives are already being involved in strategy,
02:10 - 02:12
strategic planning for the business.
02:12 - 02:14
This is not going to change and actually
02:14 - 02:16
be more important during an economic downturn.
02:17 - 02:23
Human resources will have to work with other executives and leaders to come up
02:23 - 02:28
with a plan which may involve changes to wages or benefits involve layoffs.
02:28 - 02:32
Another role HR will have is to ensure job security.
02:32 - 02:35
What I mean by this is that HR is going
02:35 - 02:39
to need to communicate to employees that their jobs are
02:39 - 02:42
secure and that they're not going to be at risk
02:42 - 02:45
in having to look for jobs during these tough times,
02:45 - 02:51
which will help employee morale and reduce gossip and reduce, hopefully,
02:51 - 02:55
improve productivity and reduce employees stressed during these tough times.
02:55 - 02:59
Now the most important function, in my opinion, I put in a separate slide,
03:00 - 03:03
and that is communication to the workforce.
03:03 - 03:04
Now,
03:04 - 03:08
everything that I've read about hrs role in these
03:08 - 03:11
tough times all agree that communication is the key,
03:11 - 03:14
and I have to agree with what they have said.
03:14 - 03:20
Uh, not just communication, but transparency in the communication is the key,
03:20 - 03:22
as I put here to success.
03:22 - 03:26
What that means is that HR needs to be able to communicate directly to
03:26 - 03:31
the employees and let them know what the company is doing and why,
03:31 - 03:34
which will help the employees accept any changes that are made
03:35 - 03:38
and have a better understanding of what the company is
03:38 - 03:40
doing To be able to survive these challenging times.
03:42 - 03:44
What does leadership role
03:44 - 03:45
and more importantly,
03:46 - 03:52
how is H are going to address leaderships, problem solving and employee concerns?
03:52 - 03:56
Well, this kind of all goes back to what we just talked about communication
03:56 - 03:58
with human resources being the link
03:59 - 04:02
directly to all communications with the workforce.
04:02 - 04:04
It's important that leadership
04:05 - 04:10
involved HR and any changes that's made in HR involved
04:10 - 04:13
the workforce with the changes that are made as well.
04:13 - 04:16
What I mean by this keeping them informed.
04:17 - 04:21
It's extremely important that HR communicate any
04:21 - 04:24
and all changes to the workforce that
04:24 - 04:27
the leaders are making to be able to survive the pandemic with the business.
04:27 - 04:32
Whether that is a change in wages change in benefits, a change in hours,
04:32 - 04:36
a change in anything that a company will do to be able to survive
04:37 - 04:39
HR can fulfill can facilitate two way
04:39 - 04:43
communication between the leaders and the employees.
04:43 - 04:46
That way, employees could speak directly to leadership,
04:46 - 04:49
address any concerns they may have and even offer suggestions.
04:49 - 04:55
And that way, leaders can also let them know what why the suggestions may not work,
04:55 - 05:00
or they may get some valuable suggestion that they may be
05:00 - 05:03
able to bubble up and get back to the employees.
05:03 - 05:07
Employees will be able to think and feel that their voice is being heard,
05:07 - 05:12
which will again help boost morale, which leads into the last categories.
05:12 - 05:16
HR will need to be able to let the employees feel valued.
05:16 - 05:19
Whether that's a recognition program of simply just
05:19 - 05:22
sending emails with any kudos for employees,
05:23 - 05:25
that may again boost morale, which will in turn
05:25 - 05:27
possibly boost productivity,
05:27 - 05:31
which will do nothing but help the business out of the situation.
05:33 - 05:38
What are the current standards being in place since we are in the COVID-19 pandemic?
05:39 - 05:41
Well, as you can see, uh, Covid,
05:41 - 05:49
19 is still raging anytime you turn on the TV and the economy is still in a downturn.
05:49 - 05:52
So with what that means is that there are numerous
05:52 - 05:55
valid current articles out there about what is being done,
05:55 - 05:57
and they all agree.
05:57 - 05:59
Just as as I stated previously,
05:59 - 06:03
communication and transparent communication is the number one key.
06:03 - 06:06
And that's the numbers standard that everybody is doing right
06:06 - 06:10
now in HR to be able to address everybody's concerns.
06:10 - 06:16
Another function of HRS to review the staff and eliminate non core employees.
06:16 - 06:19
Um, that's unfortunate, but real
06:19 - 06:22
strategy that needs to be in place to be
06:22 - 06:24
able to ensure the survivability of the business,
06:24 - 06:29
uh, retain top talent is an extremely important function.
06:29 - 06:29
Uh,
06:29 - 06:33
so that way the company can keep its product productive
06:33 - 06:38
workers and not have to job search for talented people
06:38 - 06:41
during a tough economic challenge.
06:41 - 06:43
Planning for the recovery.
06:43 - 06:49
The recession is not going to last forever. It's important for a plan to be in place
06:50 - 06:54
that the company can have to be able to be productive once a recession is done
06:55 - 06:57
and be able to hit the ground running, so to speak.
06:58 - 07:00
Final thoughts
07:00 - 07:06
I just wanted to address again that communication is the number one key
07:06 - 07:09
the human resource needs to do to be effective through a recession.
07:09 - 07:14
Uh, communication with transparency again, just everything that I've read,
07:14 - 07:18
that I have to agree that that is the number one thing that needs to be done
07:18 - 07:22
to ensure that human resource management can still be effective
07:23 - 07:27
through the recession and again that ensure the company's survival.
07:27 - 07:30
Communication is so important.
07:30 - 07:32
Uh, anecdotally,
07:32 - 07:34
or human resources department at my
07:34 - 07:37
current company communicated almost every other
07:37 - 07:41
day with any change in anything that we may have heard any news
07:42 - 07:47
of potential laws or covid policies, everything was communicated, and I can say,
07:47 - 07:48
at least from my experience,
07:48 - 07:52
it did nothing but help our situation and help make us
07:52 - 07:55
feel a little more at ease with what was going on.
07:55 - 07:57
That concludes my presentation.
07:59 - 08:01
I hope it was insightful.
08:01 - 08:03
I appreciate it. Thank you.
