00:01 - 00:03
Hello and thank you for watching this video presentation.
00:04 - 00:04
During this presentation.
00:05 - 00:07
I will tell you about research that I've done during
00:07 - 00:08
my bachelor thesis.
00:09 - 00:11
I will go over its scientific and social to importance
00:12 - 00:14
the underlying ethics and the results that came out of
00:15 - 00:18
it. So my research focused on a specific noted component
00:18 - 00:22
reaction. Not the component reactions are different from ordinary chemical
00:22 - 00:25
reactions because in these reactions three or more starting materials
00:26 - 00:27
represented, here's A.
00:27 - 00:28
B. And C.
00:28 - 00:31
Are all reacted together at once to form the end
00:31 - 00:31
product D.
00:32 - 00:33
On a certain reaction conditions.
00:34 - 00:36
We can use this puzzle scheme as a metaphor to
00:36 - 00:37
illustrate the difference.
00:38 - 00:40
So in this metaphor the puzzle pieces are the different
00:40 - 00:43
starting materials that are put together to form the product
00:43 - 00:46
or in this case of the puzzle, the route above
00:46 - 00:49
is the ordinary way for reacting three or more starting
00:49 - 00:52
materials in order to form a single product.
00:52 - 00:56
Well first two pieces of the puzzle put together to
00:56 - 00:57
form the blue slash green intermediate.
00:58 - 01:01
Afterwards, every single piece of the puzzle is evident separately
01:02 - 01:06
throughout underneath shows the way of multi component reactions where
01:07 - 01:09
all the pieces are put together at once to complete
01:09 - 01:09
the puzzle.
01:10 - 01:12
This is also referred to as a one pot synthesis.
01:14 - 01:16
The strategy of doing reaction and sweating.
01:16 - 01:19
Multi component reaction is interesting because of a couple of
01:19 - 01:22
reasons. The first big advantage is that they are relatively
01:22 - 01:26
short synthesis reactions because only one reaction takes place instead
01:26 - 01:27
of having to do multiple reactions.
01:28 - 01:30
This allows for a fast examination of hypotheses.
01:32 - 01:36
Another reason why multi component reactions are interesting is that
01:36 - 01:39
they usually lead to lower waste production because almost all
01:40 - 01:43
atoms that are present in starting materials end up in
01:43 - 01:44
the product as well.
01:45 - 01:48
So these two reasons also make multi component reaction interested
01:49 - 01:51
in for other applications, such as automated synthesis.
01:53 - 01:56
The specific reaction that I worked on during my jesus
01:57 - 01:59
looks like this, and as you can see the three
01:59 - 02:00
starting materials A B and C.
02:01 - 02:03
Are reacted together at once to form the end product
02:03 - 02:07
D. This reaction was found to work previously and my
02:07 - 02:10
task was to examine scope of this reaction or in
02:10 - 02:13
other words examine how widely applicable reaction is.
02:14 - 02:17
This was done by modifying starting material a differently each
02:18 - 02:21
time, and try and see if the reaction still works
02:21 - 02:24
and if so, every reaction works better or worse than
02:25 - 02:26
for the unmodified starting material.
02:27 - 02:30
By doing this, it is possible to prove that many
02:30 - 02:33
other different chemicals can be synthesized via this reaction.
02:34 - 02:37
So to be clear the products that were formed during
02:37 - 02:40
my thesis are not yet useful products, but the importance
02:41 - 02:43
of this research was to see if this specific reaction
02:44 - 02:46
could be used in the future to make useful products
02:47 - 02:50
while maintaining the interesting characters of multi component reactions.
02:52 - 02:58
Looking at the underlying ethics of synthetic chemistry, the cases
02:58 - 03:00
can be grouped based on the relevant relevant domain.
03:01 - 03:04
Some cases are related to the individual chemists or the
03:04 - 03:08
chemical community, which is the internal domain and some are
03:08 - 03:12
related to the impact of chemistry on social, economic and
03:12 - 03:16
environmental spheres, which is referred to as the external domain.
03:17 - 03:18
For the internal domain.
03:19 - 03:22
Three different ethical cases are considered to.
03:22 - 03:25
The first case is the good scientific practice, but it
03:25 - 03:29
is important important that researchers follow guidelines of good scientific
03:30 - 03:32
practice to ensure a high degree of scientific integrity.
03:34 - 03:37
This mostly includes things such as intellectual honesty and objectivity,
03:38 - 03:42
so no fake results or pleasures republication aspect.
03:43 - 03:44
You need to think about the right use of citations
03:45 - 03:49
in your publication, sensitization has an impact on impact on
03:49 - 03:52
priority ranking and visibility of researchers.
03:54 - 03:56
The act of citing miss citing or not citing has
03:57 - 03:59
a strong influence on scientific practice and progress.
04:01 - 04:02
The safety issues are pretty obvious.
04:04 - 04:06
And here it is important to consider that violating safety
04:07 - 04:09
regulations and guidelines for labs that involve the handling of
04:10 - 04:14
harmful substances, affects the safety of individual lap workers and
04:15 - 04:18
colleagues as well as local or even regional public and
04:18 - 04:24
environment. Yeah, the external main also tree ethical cases are
04:24 - 04:28
considered. So the first case considers the impact of the
04:28 - 04:31
design of new substances on the world and its societies
04:32 - 04:36
sometimes with negative results when pointing out chemistries, characteristics.
04:37 - 04:41
In comparison to other sciences, one might find creativity, flexible,
04:42 - 04:44
applicability and inductive knowledge.
04:45 - 04:47
And each one of these expects is accompanied with its
04:47 - 04:49
own ethical and social implications.
04:51 - 04:54
The risk and science aspect considers the risk versus benefits
04:55 - 04:58
assessment, which is not solved and might never be because
04:58 - 05:01
of the duality of the use of chemical substances.
05:02 - 05:06
You can think about explosives for example, and the fact
05:06 - 05:11
that risk is not a quantitative entity and it changes
05:11 - 05:15
over time and last but not least, Chemistry and its
05:15 - 05:18
progress is intertwined with and embedded into the development of
05:19 - 05:20
economy, society and culture.
05:21 - 05:25
Questions that occurrence considered here are how sustainable is chemistry?
05:25 - 05:29
Can it be improved and what our particular options for
05:29 - 05:32
a chemist to support sustainable development?
05:34 - 05:40
Yeah. So in conclusion, the research I performed during my
05:40 - 05:43
thesis showed no product formation for four out of the
05:43 - 05:47
six different starting materials that were tested and only a
05:47 - 05:49
small amount of product formation for the other two.
05:50 - 05:52
Although it might be the case that this reaction just
05:52 - 05:55
does not work with other starting materials other than the
05:55 - 05:56
unmodified one.
05:57 - 05:58
This is most probably not the case.
05:59 - 06:02
Since later, it was concluded that the water present and
06:02 - 06:05
started that there was water present and starting materials, which
06:05 - 06:09
has a negative impact on this specific reaction, making this
06:09 - 06:10
result and reliable.
06:11 - 06:12
So it cannot be said.
06:12 - 06:16
Yet, whether the examined reaction is widely applicable or not
06:16 - 06:20
for future examination, it will therefore be very important to
06:20 - 06:23
make sure that all starting materials that are used are
06:23 - 06:24
completely trying.
06:26 - 06:27
And this was my presentation.
06:28 - 06:31
I hope you like it and thank you for watching.
