  1. In 2008, Pigs are created a film depicting characters who
  2. were so engrossed in their ever present screens that they
  3. lost touch of reality and with each other, the lighthearted
  4. and amusing at the time, it would appear that life
  5. indeed imitates entertainment.
  6. Over the last decade, cell phones have gone from being
  7. a novelty to almost a necessity for all of us.
  8. Today. The majority of americans report ownership and frequent use
  9. of the smartphone mobile device, although the ease at which
  10. we pay our bills or keep up with our daily
  11. schedules and even manage our social life has been condensed
  12. into a rectangular handheld device.
  13. The exhilarating efficiency of the cell phone is changing how
  14. we connect with each other and these changes are not
  15. good. How often do you view groups of people sitting
  16. together in public and instead of talking with one another
  17. face to face, they either staring mindlessly at their smartphone
  18. screens? Well, this behavior has become so pervasive.
  19. It spawned the creation of a new term To help
  20. describe this new term, a group of dictionary Makers got
  21. together in 2012 and within a few days emerged with
  22. the word thudding.
  23. Funding is the combination of the words phone and snubbing.
  24. It is specifically defined as the practice of ignoring one's
  25. companion or companions in order to pay attention to one's
  26. phone or other mobile device, partner funding or P funding
  27. for short, describes the act of funding while spending time
  28. with a romantic partner.
  29. Because quality interaction and good communication is vital to the
  30. health of a couple's relationship.
  31. I wanted to know if P funding was hurting the
  32. quality of marriages or long term relationships.
  33. If a person reported a high level of P funding,
  34. would they also indicate dissatisfaction in their relationship to their
  35. partner? To find out, I reached out through social media
  36. and surveyed over 100 people.
  37. I asked them questions about how satisfied they were in
  38. the romantic relationships and then I asked them questions to
  39. determine the presence of peace, loving and their significant other.
  40. It turns out that too much p funding actually does
  41. seem to diminish relationship satisfaction, but only if you're female.
  42. The guys do not seem to mind as much if
  43. there are other half scrolls through social media while they're
  44. together. But for the women in my research, hanging out
  45. with their room and together needs to be sands phones.
  46. Since past research indicates that the quality of a woman's
  47. romantic relationships affects her self esteem rate of depression and
  48. life satisfaction, excessive p funding could negatively impact the well
  49. being of women.
  50. I think the funding could be disruptive to healthy communication
  51. and may keep couples from experiencing deep personal connections with
  52. one another with this in mind.
  53. I think it's important to explore exactly how pervasive p
  54. funding behaviors are in relationships that are in crisis.
  55. Perhaps then a couple going through tumultuous times could begin
  56. to experience improvement by the simple act of putting away
  57. their phones when they are together and like john and
  58. mary and the Pixar movie wall e, they might begin
  59. to connect in new ways.
  60. Thank you.
