00:01 - 00:03
Hi, everyone. It's Ashlyn Hogg.
00:03 - 00:05
And today I'm making this video just to talk a
00:05 - 00:07
little bit about one of my students who is struggling.
00:08 - 00:09
His name is Lucas
00:09 - 00:12
and him and his family just transferred here from France
00:12 - 00:14
and he speaks very little English.
00:14 - 00:18
So he's really struggling to feel included in the classroom
00:18 - 00:22
and he's doing well in math, but he's really struggling in all areas
00:23 - 00:25
and he's having a hard time communicating with me
00:25 - 00:29
and his classmates. And I just like to find something that can help him
00:29 - 00:31
adjust while he begins to learn English
00:32 - 00:34
and a tool I found,
00:34 - 00:35
um,
00:35 - 00:37
is called fluent talk
00:37 - 00:40
T I mini. It costs 100 and $49
00:40 - 00:44
but it looks like a fantastic tool that will really help him get adjusted.
00:44 - 00:49
And how it works is he wears it around his neck and it has a little,
00:49 - 00:52
it's a little device that looks a lot like an iphone with a little screen
00:53 - 00:53
and
00:54 - 00:58
the teacher can talk and it will translate into French for him automatically
00:58 - 01:02
and he can talk back to it in French and it will translate to anyone
01:02 - 01:04
um, back into English.
01:04 - 01:09
And so it's a great tool. It's very fast, it's effective, it's accurate
01:09 - 01:12
and there's also a camera on it so he can scan
01:12 - 01:12
um,
01:12 - 01:15
pictures or worksheets or anything and it can
01:15 - 01:17
help translate that into French form as well.
01:18 - 01:20
And when he's not using it,
01:20 - 01:23
it can be stored in my classroom and my desk charging,
01:23 - 01:25
so it's ready for him the next day.
01:26 - 01:26
And
01:27 - 01:28
um,
01:28 - 01:30
I know there are other apps out there like
01:30 - 01:33
it will translate or Duolingo other language apps,
01:34 - 01:37
but this is a lot more efficient and it's faster
01:37 - 01:41
and it's a device where he can just wear it and it will be automatic.
01:41 - 01:46
And I think this could be an incredible first step to helping lots of students
01:46 - 01:48
with the language barrier.
01:48 - 01:53
And it's perfect because when he's done using it, when he's um learned English,
01:53 - 01:56
it can be moved on to the next, it can be for a different student.
01:57 - 01:59
And I just think this would be a great tool
01:59 - 02:02
to have in my classroom
02:02 - 02:06
and to help other students and just to help him feel more included in my room
02:06 - 02:10
and help him begin to make those connections with other people and myself.
02:10 - 02:11
Thank you.
