  24. If a child is a struggling reader, a writer The
  25. conclusion must be that we have not yet discovered the
  26. way to help a child learn.
  27. I believe that early identification of struggle is really crucial,
  28. and as a teacher, I believe it is important to
  29. learn a variety of strategies to teach all learning needs
  30. of my students.
  31. Literacy development is less about a limited critical period and
  32. more about windows of opportunity that extend to about 10
  33. years old.
  34. So even if the child has limited access, toe language
  35. and literacy experiences in the home, there is much ground

  40. Something's teachers can do during the early literacy phase include
  41. things like share books with Children, talk about letter names
  42. and sounds, establish a literacy rich environment, participate in writing
  43. gains, identify letters and make letters, sound matches and use
  44. the letters to represent written language.
  45. That means something to them, you know, like writing their
  46. name, these air strategies that companies in the classroom as
  47. well as with families even, you know, at the home.
  48. The Children you know, having parents bring their Children to
  49. the library, using lots of conversation and naming everything that
  50. they're doing, like let's go wash the dishes.
  51. I'm going to take the pan out of the water.
  52. Now I'm going to try it, just using language all
  53. the time to give them a rich vocabulary.
  54. It is my goal to have a positive, learning rich
  55. environment every child will learn as I engage them in
  56. the window of opportunities by using all the different kinds
  57. of strategies and techniques and and making sure that I
  58. am educated and aware of all the different evidence based
  59. practices that help each child with all their different learning
  60. needs to build a meet their potential and do the
  61. very best that they can.
