00:02 - 00:05
my book is titled We All Fall Down and was written by Nick Chef.
00:06 - 00:09
It's your memoir of his life as a struggling addict.
00:09 - 00:13
After reading this book and discussing materials I learned in class,
00:13 - 00:14
I came up with the thesis
00:14 - 00:15
The States.
00:15 - 00:18
But when we interact with someone that we care for,
00:19 - 00:21
there's a strong emotional connection that can be
00:21 - 00:23
seen with high activation and then Magdala,
00:24 - 00:28
this strong emotional response causes us to learn from and be hyper operational
00:28 - 00:29
slash of aware
00:29 - 00:30
of that person
00:31 - 00:32
when we are in that state.
00:32 - 00:34
If the observed person is using drugs
00:34 - 00:37
slash enacts addictive behaviors than the observer,
00:37 - 00:40
can become more addiction grown and learn through observation
00:42 - 00:45
now, what does that exactly mean?
00:45 - 00:49
So I put this in here to just explain through a different way.
00:49 - 00:51
So I put the batman and Robin picture in here
00:51 - 00:55
two as an example of two people who have this close relationship.
00:56 - 00:56
Now,
00:56 - 00:59
this close relationship can be measured by high activation
00:59 - 01:02
in the amygdala as it regulates these emotions.
01:02 - 01:07
So when batman and Robin around each other with more activation in the amygdala,
01:07 - 01:09
they will be highly observant of each other,
01:09 - 01:11
meaning that they will be more likely to pick up
01:11 - 01:14
on things that each other does because of that closeness.
01:14 - 01:18
This can apply to other social situations such as shopping,
01:18 - 01:22
where people, when you're with your friends, it's highly emotional process,
01:22 - 01:26
you might be more likely to buy more things if they're buying more things or in a
01:26 - 01:31
scenario in college where you see a lot of drinking and you're with your friends.
01:31 - 01:35
So you might be peer pressured, which is another aspect that plays into this
01:36 - 01:39
And the Mosquito 2018 article that we read in class.
01:39 - 01:44
It focused on cross cultural examination of different personality pathways to
01:44 - 01:48
alcohol use and it kind of focused on different personalities,
01:49 - 01:52
causing more susceptibility to alcoholism.
01:54 - 01:55
So
01:55 - 02:00
kind of to just get a general summary of the story and how I came up with this thesis
02:00 - 02:02
um in the beginning of the story,
02:02 - 02:05
if I was nick in new york where he attempts to attain crystal meth,
02:05 - 02:07
which is the main drug of choice
02:07 - 02:13
and how he's in love with this girl named Zelda. Um it has an extreme longing for her
02:13 - 02:17
um even though Zelda is the main one that kind of causes
02:17 - 02:20
him to go to this relapse state and get these drugs,
02:20 - 02:23
which eventually causes both of them to lose all
02:23 - 02:25
the relationships with their friends and their families.
02:27 - 02:28
Next, he attends a stripped,
02:28 - 02:33
a strict rehab center in Arizona where he follows 12 step model
02:33 - 02:36
that we learned about in class and he has a sponsor,
02:36 - 02:37
which is that
02:37 - 02:40
um this kind of follows that same narrative of
02:41 - 02:42
of that discussion,
02:42 - 02:46
talk with yourself and finding higher power that we also discussing clause.
02:47 - 02:51
And during that, during that rehab center,
02:51 - 02:56
it's a very strict center where he can't have any other connections or close bonds,
02:56 - 03:00
but he does secretly find a bond, there's another girl Sue Ellen
03:01 - 03:03
um which is kind of like a Romeo and Juliet love
03:03 - 03:06
story in a way where they kind of meet up at night
03:06 - 03:09
in the forest and that eventually really helps nick move on
03:09 - 03:14
past his ex girlfriend and moved on past his past addictions.
03:18 - 03:19
So a theme in this book
03:20 - 03:20
and
03:21 - 03:25
his next over think he keeps on overthinking things,
03:25 - 03:29
especially when it comes to his past relationship Zelda,
03:29 - 03:33
he always wants to be with her, he, when he talks about it with his therapist,
03:33 - 03:34
he chokes up.
03:34 - 03:35
Um
03:36 - 03:39
he really is just confused on his thoughts with her
03:39 - 03:45
and I think that mindfulness would really help mix um kind of confused,
03:45 - 03:48
confused mind that he has, he has all these mixed thoughts
03:48 - 03:50
and that does mixed thoughts,
03:50 - 03:56
he kind of uses those drugs to kind of relapse those feelings and he just wants to go
03:56 - 03:59
back to Zelda because his ex girlfriend is comfortable
03:59 - 04:01
but he has to move past that situation.
04:05 - 04:09
So another thing that is similar to what we talked about in class, that relates this,
04:09 - 04:14
nick was approached with the 12 step model and he really did not like it.
04:14 - 04:17
Um he says in the book that he doesn't believe in
04:17 - 04:20
the 12 step program and that he thinks that his personality
04:20 - 04:23
isn't right for so I think that this plays into the
04:23 - 04:26
part where you see a different personality types work with different
04:27 - 04:28
treatment with its
04:31 - 04:36
so here another connection to class, I wanted to talk about the meso limbic pathway,
04:36 - 04:37
how we talked,
04:37 - 04:41
how the about how the Magdala plays a role during stress and how it switches
04:41 - 04:45
from the thoughtful prefrontal cortex regulation to
04:45 - 04:47
the rapid emotional response of the Magdala.
04:48 - 04:54
In another study that I found focused on how the interior singular cortex
04:55 - 04:57
and the base of letter of Magdala both
04:58 - 05:01
alter real time and make the middle of representation
05:01 - 05:04
and how this observational learning and operate conditioning.
05:04 - 05:08
Study rats learn differently based off activation in the medulla.
05:14 - 05:15
In conclusion,
05:15 - 05:19
I think that science has definitely found that there is a relationship between
05:20 - 05:25
um the Magdala and how you learn and how you might be more addiction. Brown.
05:25 - 05:30
And I think one way to combat this could possibly be motivational interviewing,
05:30 - 05:34
which is what Nick went through that were really seemed to help him
