  1. Okay, today, we're going to learn improv.
  2. Now, this is really going to help us as we
  3. start to explore a scripted or improvised character by imagining
  4. possible given circumstances in the theatrical work.
  5. So, before we can start to improvise and get on
  6. our feet, we're going to have to learn the rules
  7. of improv.
  8. Who knew there could be rules to improv, but they
  9. are and they're very important to learn.
  10. So, on this sheet, I have the 10 rules.
  11. I'm going to give you 30 seconds and I want
  12. you to put a T for true and an F
  13. for false.
  14. Next to these 10 rules.
  15. I'm gonna give you 30 seconds starting now.
  16. All right, about 10 more seconds.
  17. Mhm. All right.
  18. So let's walk through these rules together.
  19. So number one don't deny this is true.
  20. So, when we're presented with an idea or a character
  21. from our scene partner or as an ensemble, we want
  22. to just say yes.
  23. And we're going to talk about that a little bit
  24. later. But it's important to take that idea or that
  25. circumstance and really build upon it number to ask questions.
  26. So this is false.
  27. As much as I love you to ask questions and
  28. improv, we actually don't want to ask questions if we're
  29. giving a beach ball.
  30. We don't want to say, well, how did I get
  31. the beach ball, Why do I have the beach ball?
  32. We just want to take the beach ball and then
  33. build upon why we have it and start creating a
  34. scenario or a character.
  35. Number three dictate action.
  36. So this is also false.
  37. We don't want to dictate action.
  38. We want to be able to create the action as
  39. a team or in our scene, work with with another
  40. partner. We really want to be able to get there
  41. organically and as a team or with a scene partner,
  42. number four don't talk about past or future events.
  43. So this is actually true.
  44. We want to make sure that whatever circumstance we are
  45. given from our audience or that we are giving to
  46. them, it's actually something relevant and something that they can
  47. connect to.
  48. Number five establish who what where.
  49. So this is true.
  50. These improv scenes are meant to be short and when
  51. a character enter as we want to make sure that
  52. we can quickly establish who we are, what is taking
  53. place in the scene and where we are.
  54. Number six don't negotiate, this is true.
  55. This goes back to don't deny, we don't want to
  56. be given the beach ball and then negotiate the terms
  57. of the beach ball we want to accept and then
  58. build upon Number seven Do teaching scenes.
  59. So this is false.
  60. We don't want to spend a lot of time explaining
  61. the rules or educating our audience.
  62. We want to just give them a really short scene
  63. with really big characters, lots and lots of action.
  64. Number eight tell don't show.
  65. So this is false and actually reversed.
  66. We want to show and not tell number nine say
  67. yes and then say no.
  68. Hopefully by now you have heard me say it and
  69. you know, that's false.
  70. We want to say yes.
  71. And then we want to say.
  72. And And number 10 don't talk about what you are
  73. doing. So this is actually true.
  74. This goes back to show.
  75. Don't tell.
  76. We sometimes play games within the scene and if we
  77. go ahead and talk about what we're doing, the audience
  78. won't get to play with us and figure that out
  79. as we go along.
  80. So thinking about these improvised characters.
  81. I'm going to show you a clip from one of
  82. my favorite shows whose line is it?
  83. Anyway, and this one has Robin Williams as the guest.
  84. He's amazing.
  85. And something I want you to watch is the way
  86. that Ryan or Colin or wayne or Robin will come
  87. in as an improvised character and enter the scene to
  88. help the idea or the circumstance propel forward or put
  89. a button and end the scene.
  90. So let's watch that now.
  91. All right, so, you've heard me say it.
  92. Let's talk about yes.
  93. And so improv is not like normal scene work.
  94. This is not a solo performance.
  95. This is a certain style of style of scene work,
  96. but it's with two people sometimes run an ensemble.
  97. There's lots of ideas, lots of creation to emerge.
  98. And it's our job as a good scene partner and
  99. a good ensemble member to say yes and to whatever
  100. ideas presented and to propel that scene forward.
  101. So what I want us to do is partner up
  102. and I want partner a to say in action And
  103. partner to to say yes and then build upon that
  104. action. So if partner one says this is a beach
  105. ball, then partner B can say yes and it's going
  106. to carry us to the moon.
  107. So let's take 15 seconds to just quickly rapid fire
  108. yes. And and go yes, alright, last few bits of
  109. ideas. All right.
  110. So with that exercise, it's really going to just warm
  111. us up and open our brains to really widen and
  112. create and expand and improvise great situations, great characters.
  113. So we're going to wrap up and we're going to
  114. play a game called yes, let's so I'm going to
  115. explain the game.
  116. I'm going to read you a quote and then we'll
  117. play. So what?
  118. Yes, let's is we're going to be in a circle
  119. and I want someone to be bold and to be
  120. brave and you're going to say an action.
  121. So let's say I say let's go skiing then as
  122. a team in an ensemble, you'll say yes, let's and
  123. then we'll all do the action of skiing.
  124. Then someone else whoever feels called can come forward insane
  125. action will respond with yes, let's and then we'll do
  126. that action and we'll keep going.
  127. That's going to get us in the habit of really
  128. saying and at the same time and then we can
  129. build upon that yes, let's with the yes and yeah,
  130. so I'm really excited about this.
  131. I think this is really going to help us With
  132. scene work as well.
  133. One of my favorite quotes, this is from Jack Maguire,
  134. he's on 30 rock, numerous shows.
  135. He says with all my ears and improvisation taught is
  136. that if you're going to grow as a performer, you
  137. have to try new things.
  138. You've got to be willing to take some risks.
  139. So improv, there is no right.
  140. There is no wrong.
  141. But I hope that this gives you guys energy to
  142. really take those risks.
  143. Be bold and be brave.
  144. Let's play.
  145. Yeah.
