Hi, My name is Fabiana Carvallo, and for my Ted
00:03 - 00:05
talk, I will be comparing three religions to one of
00:05 - 00:06
the seven dimensions of religion.
00:07 - 00:10
So I chose the material Dimension and Buddhism, Christianity and
00:11 - 00:12
the primal Native American religion.
00:12 - 00:15
Some key concepts to keep in mind are that the
00:15 - 00:18
material dimension include all of the physical elements of one's
00:18 - 00:18
faith in religion.
00:19 - 00:21
This refers to objects, areas and resource is that people
00:22 - 00:23
used to express the religion.
00:24 - 00:26
So a very popular symbol for Buddhism is a statue
00:27 - 00:28
of Buddha with a big belly.
00:28 - 00:30
This is the one that you most commonly see everywhere
00:31 - 00:32
there, many more.
00:32 - 00:34
But this is the one that stands out the most.
00:34 - 00:36
Christianity also carries a huge history of symbolism.
00:37 - 00:38
Along with imagery.
00:38 - 00:40
This is shown in many ways from visual arts, architecture,
00:41 - 00:41
er and literature.
00:42 - 00:44
Music and some of the well known ones are the
00:44 - 00:47
crossing, the crucifix, the church buildings and paintings.
00:47 - 00:50
So the primal Native American religion also using materials to
00:50 - 00:51
express their faith.
00:51 - 00:53
The two that I chose are the sweat lodges and
00:53 - 00:53
the Sundance's.
00:55 - 00:57
There are over 100 different poses illustrating the life of
00:57 - 01:00
Buddha. I chose three to talk about today, which are
01:01 - 01:03
the protection Buddha, the meditation Buddha and the Happy Buddha.
01:04 - 01:07
So the statue signifies courage and offers protection from fear
01:07 - 01:08
and anger.
01:08 - 01:12
The two most common meanings, the first being that it
01:12 - 01:14
symbolically represents a shield.
01:14 - 01:17
And the second is overcoming fear, which makes sense because
01:18 - 01:20
someone who is being protected has no need to be
01:20 - 01:23
fearful. It can also be seen either sitting down or
01:23 - 01:24
standing up.
01:24 - 01:27
So the meditation Buddha is usually for people who, like
01:27 - 01:30
Thio, be calm in their life that, like peace and
01:30 - 01:33
calm, these air usually seeing the serenity rooms or somewhere
01:34 - 01:36
in your house where you could just genuinely sit down,
01:36 - 01:36
become and meditate.
01:38 - 01:40
It is also in the shape of a triangle, which
01:40 - 01:41
represents stability.
01:41 - 01:44
Lastly, we have the Happy Buddha, which is famous for
01:44 - 01:46
his Buddhist sermons and his bag full of gifts, which
01:46 - 01:48
he rewards to Children after they come to learn.
01:49 - 01:52
And he usually always has his arms above his head
01:52 - 01:53
reaching upward.
01:54 - 01:55
As you can see, he always has a big smile
01:56 - 01:57
on his face with his bald head and his big
01:58 - 02:01
belly, and he usually wears a robe that exposes a
02:01 - 02:02
good amount of his chest.
02:02 - 02:06
Christianity uses symbolism and imagery as a way to convey
02:07 - 02:08
religious concepts, ideas and events.
02:09 - 02:11
Ah, couple symbols that I chose, whether crossing the crucifix,
02:12 - 02:13
Alfa and Omega and the fish.
02:13 - 02:16
And for art, I chose architecture, visual arts and music.
02:17 - 02:19
Here we have the crossing, the crucifix symbolizing Jesus to
02:19 - 02:22
sacrifice on the cross and how much he loves mankind.
02:22 - 02:25
That he sacrificed his life for us, Alfa and Omega
02:25 - 02:27
basically meaning the beginning to the end.
02:27 - 02:30
Considering Alfa is the first letter of the Greek alphabet
02:31 - 02:32
and omega being the last.
02:32 - 02:35
And for the fish, the letters that make up fish
02:35 - 02:38
in the Greek alphabet make up this secret word word
02:39 - 02:42
puzzle that is the central Declaration of Christianity.
02:42 - 02:43
For architecture.
02:44 - 02:46
We usually see the stained glass windows in church, and
02:46 - 02:49
they're basically way to depict biblical scenes for music.
02:49 - 02:52
We usually see these in psalms, and they're away of
02:52 - 02:55
worshiping during church and visual arts.
02:55 - 02:58
These air, usually like paintings, also used to depict biblical
02:58 - 03:01
scenes and yeah, I chose the last separate for this
03:02 - 03:04
one. So place is very important in the primal Native
03:05 - 03:09
American religion, and they're often localized where they practice these
03:09 - 03:10
religious practices.
03:11 - 03:13
The two examples that I picked were the Native American
03:14 - 03:14
Sweat Lodge and the Sundance.
03:15 - 03:21
So these performances are generally theatrical, and it's curious, believed
03:21 - 03:21
to be miraculous.
03:22 - 03:25
Um, so the Sweat Lodge is a small, round, close
03:25 - 03:27
structure, and it's a temple to honor the elements.
03:27 - 03:28
Earth, fire, water and air.
03:29 - 03:32
And, yeah, provides power purification for all levels.
03:33 - 03:35
Here's the herbs and the hot rock, and here is
03:36 - 03:36
this team.
03:36 - 03:39
Now there's a center pull in this Sundance, which symbolizes
03:40 - 03:40
a connection to the divine.
03:41 - 03:43
And these men are usually required to partake in a
03:43 - 03:45
piercing, which are two incisions that are made on made
03:46 - 03:47
on each side of their chests.
03:47 - 03:51
And wooden pegs are inserted, Um, that are connected to
03:51 - 03:53
the center pool, actually, and it's a form of self
03:53 - 03:56
degrade degradation so that the spirits will respond to their
03:57 - 03:59
sacrifice and give them strength to complete the Sundance.
03:59 - 04:02
As you can see, this man is connected to the
04:02 - 04:04
center pull with his two pegs in his chest.
04:04 - 04:07
Um, in conclusion, the most significant thing that I took
04:07 - 04:09
away from this course was expanding my knowledge on different
04:10 - 04:12
religions and genuinely taking the time to educate myself about
04:12 - 04:14
their rituals and their ways of life.
04:14 - 04:17
Considering I have opened my mind and educated myself on
04:17 - 04:19
their beliefs and their story behind many of these religions,
04:20 - 04:23
I am able to perceive their ways of life and
04:23 - 04:25
genuinely respect how they live.
04:25 - 04:27
Thank you for tuning into my Ted talk.
