00:01 - 00:02
Hi. My name is Jaime Myers.
00:04 - 00:06
Today I'm gonna talk about technology enhanced instruction.
00:07 - 00:09
Specifically, I s t e standards.
00:10 - 00:13
I'm going to present three classroom teacher interviews that I
00:14 - 00:17
did with a kindergarten teacher, third grade teacher in sixth
00:18 - 00:20
grade Teacher as well as go over a lesson plan.
00:21 - 00:26
Analysis, Um, that I conduct created through a lesson plan
00:26 - 00:29
that this experience you're provided for me and look at
00:29 - 00:35
a checklist of some guided technology ideas that will help
00:36 - 00:37
prepare me for my future classroom.
00:40 - 00:42
So first I want to look at the eyes t
00:42 - 00:47
standards. So the vision of the I s t e
00:48 - 00:52
is that all educators are empowered to harness technology to
00:52 - 00:56
accelerate innovation and teaching and learning and spire learners to
00:56 - 00:58
reach their greatest potential.
00:59 - 01:04
Their mission is for iced tea to inspire educators worldwide
01:04 - 01:10
to use technology to innovate, teaching a learning, accelerate good
01:10 - 01:15
practice and solve tough problems in education by providing community
01:16 - 01:20
knowledge and the I s t e standards a framework
01:20 - 01:23
for rethinking education and empowering learners.
01:27 - 01:31
So I conducted three interviews with three public elementary school
01:31 - 01:35
teachers on I ask them these questions one.
01:36 - 01:39
How do you help students develop digital citizenship skills in
01:39 - 01:43
your classroom to How do you advocate for the diversified
01:43 - 01:45
needs? Ah, students through technology.
01:46 - 01:50
Three. How do you actively contribute to blended learning communities
01:50 - 01:54
virtually in locally based for How does technology play into
01:55 - 01:56
your classroom assessment practices?
01:57 - 02:00
Five. How do you keep students on task supported and
02:01 - 02:02
learning in your technology platforms?
02:03 - 02:06
Six. How do you create real world experiences through the
02:06 - 02:07
use of technology in your classroom?
02:09 - 02:09
And seven.
02:09 - 02:11
How do you base your lesson?
02:11 - 02:15
Plans around the incorporation of technology or at technology into
02:15 - 02:17
the lesson plan after the fact.
02:18 - 02:21
So when I looked over all of the answers that
02:22 - 02:26
the teachers gave me, um, when I look at number
02:26 - 02:29
one, um, it looks like a lot of the teachers
02:30 - 02:34
went over digital citizenship through social lessons on the emphasize
02:35 - 02:40
cyberbullying and basic like password in privacy use that Internet
02:41 - 02:42
safety, a zealous plagiarism.
02:44 - 02:46
Now they advocated for diversify needs.
02:46 - 02:48
Um, not too much.
02:48 - 02:51
Um, a lot of the teachers didn't have quite a
02:51 - 02:52
lot of experience with it.
02:52 - 02:55
Ah, one teacher did mention having some experience with advocating
02:56 - 03:01
for assistive technologies for students with special needs when it
03:01 - 03:03
came to contribution to virtual communities.
03:04 - 03:07
There was very little contribution outside what was required by
03:07 - 03:10
the school district's through professional development meetings.
03:11 - 03:14
Um, one teacher did mention that they liked to use
03:14 - 03:15
Social Media, Group said.
03:16 - 03:18
Keep up on technology trends and see what other schools
03:18 - 03:20
were doing when it came to assessment practices.
03:21 - 03:25
Um, the majority of assessments that were done on technology
03:26 - 03:28
war, some motive assessments or standardized tests.
03:29 - 03:30
I'm not a lot of formative assessment.
03:32 - 03:34
When it came to keeping students on task and supported,
03:35 - 03:37
a lot of the teachers talked about walking around and
03:37 - 03:42
observing their students, providing incentives and setting goals for students
03:42 - 03:45
to reach to keep them supported it through their continual
03:46 - 03:46
learning process.
03:48 - 03:51
Rhea World Experiences A lot of the teachers incorporate Internet
03:52 - 03:54
videos such as YouTube, or they just have open discussions
03:54 - 03:59
about how situations will affect them and the real world,
04:01 - 04:02
um, technology.
04:03 - 04:08
Through lesson planning, some teachers incorporated it into their lesson
04:08 - 04:12
plan from the beginning, others kind of work backwards in
04:12 - 04:16
Look at technology after the fact and some didn't you
04:17 - 04:19
the use it at all when it technology was more
04:20 - 04:20
of a set aside?
04:20 - 04:26
Skill time Ah, specifically are when I asked her third
04:26 - 04:27
re teacher a maneuver straight.
04:27 - 04:30
How do you help students developed digital citizenship skills in
04:30 - 04:30
your classroom?
04:32 - 04:32
She said.
04:32 - 04:34
I have been really working on cyber bullying this year
04:34 - 04:36
with my kids because it is something that I think
04:36 - 04:38
is happening way more often and going unnoticed.
04:39 - 04:41
I give social lessons at the end of the school
04:41 - 04:44
day, and I try to use lessons that focus on
04:44 - 04:46
technology and what kids were doing on the Internet, because
04:47 - 04:49
that is where so many off the students are spending
04:50 - 04:50
their time.
04:50 - 04:52
Plus, many of them don't know that they leave a
04:52 - 04:55
digital footprint behind them, and showing them how to be
04:55 - 04:56
responsible is important.
04:57 - 04:59
So she was really emphasizing the digital citizenship with her
05:00 - 05:06
students. When I look at our, um, kindergarten teacher, uh,
05:07 - 05:09
him win Stein, she's I asked, How do you actively
05:09 - 05:12
contribute to blended learning communities virtually and locally based?
05:13 - 05:16
And she said, I do not contribute to anything I
05:16 - 05:16
don't have to.
05:17 - 05:19
When it comes to technology for the district, I go
05:19 - 05:21
to All of the training is that I have to
05:21 - 05:22
go to, but that is all.
05:23 - 05:26
So it looks like she's only doing the minimum what's
05:26 - 05:31
required through the district in terms of, um, really educating
05:31 - 05:33
our cell phone, different technology trends.
05:34 - 05:36
When I talked to the sixth grade teacher Henry Hall,
05:36 - 05:38
I asked him, How do you create real world experiences
05:39 - 05:40
through the use of technology in your classroom?
05:41 - 05:43
Needs that I try to use a real world experiences
05:43 - 05:44
in all of my lessons.
05:45 - 05:47
But I strongly emphasized it in research.
05:48 - 05:51
I try to use current events and have students practice
05:52 - 05:52
their keyword searches.
05:53 - 05:56
Much of the information that they're finding is going to
05:56 - 05:58
depend on if they have the right skills to keyword
05:58 - 06:01
search. I always try to emphasize how this is going
06:01 - 06:04
to affect them in the real world, and sometimes it
06:05 - 06:07
doesn't. And I am honest with my students about that,
06:08 - 06:10
and I want them to use their critical thinking skills.
06:10 - 06:15
So he is really emphasizing with students the real world
06:15 - 06:19
experiences, um, how to search effectively using the right key
06:19 - 06:26
words rial 21st learning technology coming from the classroom.
06:29 - 06:31
So the lesson plan that I got I got from
06:31 - 06:34
the sixth grade teacher, Henry Hall, and it the general
06:35 - 06:37
lesson is that students will work in groups of three
06:38 - 06:41
or four, and each group will choose a fiction book
06:41 - 06:41
of choice.
06:42 - 06:44
Students will read the book individually and then collaborate in
06:44 - 06:45
their group.
06:45 - 06:48
They will complete a book report individually based on the
06:48 - 06:49
criteria and their Google classroom.
06:50 - 06:52
Listen and then, as a group, create a five minute
06:52 - 06:54
video trailer of the book they chose.
06:54 - 06:58
So this is like a digital story telling book report
06:58 - 06:59
they're gonna do.
06:59 - 07:04
They're written research report and then, as a group, create
07:04 - 07:05
a multimedia trailer.
07:06 - 07:10
I have an engaging, creative way to, ah, demonstrate what
07:10 - 07:11
they learn from the book.
07:12 - 07:15
The listen highlights quite a few common core state standards
07:17 - 07:21
as well as, uh, several I s T E standards.
07:21 - 07:25
It looks like number one number 234 and six were
07:25 - 07:27
highlighted in this lesson.
07:27 - 07:30
So there was along with using the Google classroom as
07:30 - 07:35
a technology platform there, also creating the multimedia, uh, book
07:36 - 07:41
trailer I wish to add to the technology through collaboration
07:45 - 07:46
for my future classroom.
07:47 - 07:49
Uh, this is the checklist that I'd like to use
07:49 - 07:50
for guiding my lesson plans.
07:52 - 07:55
My lessons would include technology that alliance with the long
07:55 - 07:56
term learning goals for my students.
07:57 - 07:58
The technology.
07:59 - 08:02
Um, I wanted to broaden students perspective and allow for
08:02 - 08:03
them to make real world connections.
08:04 - 08:07
The technology shouldn't augment the lesson or distract the students.
08:08 - 08:11
Um, I want the lessons to ensure that all students,
08:12 - 08:14
including dual language learners and those with special needs, have
08:15 - 08:16
the opportunity to use and learn from technology.
08:18 - 08:20
I want the lesson to encourage students to take responsibility
08:21 - 08:24
for their learning goals while they are using technology unsupervised
08:26 - 08:28
and one of the lessons but to address cyber bullying
08:28 - 08:32
and help students develop an awareness for it and create
08:33 - 08:34
skills that can combat it.
08:37 - 08:42
And that is my presentation on technology in the classroom,
08:43 - 08:44
Thank you very much.
