00:02 - 00:06
Hi, my name is Lainey Ears. It's August 8, 2022.
00:06 - 00:10
And the password for this assignment is purple.
00:11 - 00:15
When I was younger I hated taking naps. I would fight until I fell asleep.
00:15 - 00:19
I don't know a kid and still don't know a kid who likes taking naps.
00:19 - 00:22
But when we were young, our parents wanted us to do it
00:22 - 00:25
and quite frankly our bodies needed it to grow
00:26 - 00:28
Fast forward 15 years and taking naps is all I want to do.
00:29 - 00:32
I'm here today to encourage everyone to start taking naps.
00:32 - 00:36
My main three points are that naps can improve alertness,
00:36 - 00:40
improve your mood and energy level and reduce anxiety and stress.
00:44 - 00:44
For my first,
00:44 - 00:48
main point naps can improve alertness according to
00:48 - 00:51
the Center for Disease Control and Prevention,
00:51 - 00:52
naps can improve alertness.
00:53 - 00:56
The CDC states strong scientific evidence shows that our
00:56 - 00:59
brains benefit from a brief period of actual sleep,
00:59 - 01:00
which is called the nap
01:00 - 01:05
and not just a quiet period to recover from fatigue and to help restore alertness.
01:07 - 01:09
So today I started a new job
01:10 - 01:11
and I was really nervous about it.
01:12 - 01:14
I stayed up really like doing homework last night
01:15 - 01:19
and I have a lot of extracurriculars that I was trying to plan
01:19 - 01:22
out and make sure that I got done around my new work schedule.
01:23 - 01:25
I plan my day is the following.
01:25 - 01:29
I was planning on getting up at 4:45 a.m. This morning to go to the gym
01:30 - 01:35
at six a.m. I was to get home and I have two horses to ride.
01:35 - 01:38
I was going to get both of them ridden by seven a.m.
01:38 - 01:41
And from there I was going to come back and get ready
01:41 - 01:46
and be at work by 8:15 that didn't go as planned whatsoever.
01:47 - 01:51
I was at the gym at 5:15 and I felt fine this morning.
01:51 - 01:57
I got my workout in um I thought my day was going to go as planned. I got home at six,
01:58 - 02:01
I was about to go and get my horses saddled when I crashed really hard.
02:02 - 02:05
Had to be realistic with myself and tell myself that if
02:05 - 02:08
I don't get an hour of sleep between six and seven a.m.
02:08 - 02:09
Um
02:10 - 02:12
I probably wasn't gonna have a good first day and
02:12 - 02:15
I probably wasn't going to make a good first impression.
02:16 - 02:21
I was super glad that I got the hour of sleep between six and seven.
02:21 - 02:24
I got to my new job today and everything went great.
02:24 - 02:27
I wasn't really tired, I woke up this morning
02:27 - 02:32
from my hour and up and I felt energized and ready to take on the day.
02:33 - 02:37
I felt refreshed alert and not so sluggish for my first day of my new job.
02:39 - 02:43
Another reason naps are great is they can improve your mood and energy level.
02:43 - 02:47
There are several different types of naps according to the sleep foundation.
02:47 - 02:52
A putative naps are taken for enjoyment of napping and napping can
02:52 - 02:55
be relaxing and can improve your mood and energy level upon waking
02:57 - 03:01
An effective daytime nap is between 15 and 20 minutes and should not
03:01 - 03:04
go longer than that as it can mess up with your sleep cycle.
03:08 - 03:10
Finally, naps can reduce anxiety and stress
03:12 - 03:15
according to the landmark health dot org,
03:15 - 03:20
increase energy, improve reaction time and reduce daytime sleepiness.
03:20 - 03:22
They lower stress and help to regulate mood,
03:22 - 03:26
reducing anxiety and depression and inducing relaxation.
03:26 - 03:32
I know that when I'm having a terrible day, even stressful, whatever the case may be,
03:32 - 03:35
I can take a nap and I can wake up feeling better.
03:35 - 03:39
It may not be a whole lot better but it's better than when I went to sleep
03:40 - 03:40
now.
03:40 - 03:44
Like I was saying um they recommend that Nasa be
03:44 - 03:48
kept short otherwise it messes with your sleep cycle.
03:48 - 03:52
So I know personally that if I go down and take a nap,
03:52 - 03:54
I mean I do want to always sleep longer,
03:54 - 03:59
but if I sit down lay down and get ready to take a nap
04:00 - 04:01
and if I sleep longer then
04:02 - 04:08
30-45 minutes. I feel terrible when I wake up I want to go back to sleep.
04:08 - 04:13
I feel even more depressed and when I went to sleep to me it's just not
04:14 - 04:17
A really good deal to sleep past that length.
04:17 - 04:22
Um if I sleep between 10 and 15 minutes, even 20 minutes I would get feeling pretty,
04:22 - 04:24
pretty refreshed and energized.
04:25 - 04:29
I know everyone gets a little moody when they haven't had enough sleep,
04:29 - 04:32
even like I said 15-30 minutes can have you waking up
04:32 - 04:35
feeling energized and ready to take on more of your day.
04:38 - 04:41
So today I talked about why naps are beneficial for adults.
04:41 - 04:44
My three main points where naps can improve alertness,
04:44 - 04:49
they can improve mood and energy levels as well as reduce anxiety and stress.
04:49 - 04:54
I encourage everyone to start taking naps if you haven't already started.
04:54 - 04:59
They aren't just for Children and it isn't viewed as lazy if you do take naps,
04:59 - 05:02
anyone and everyone can get advantages from taking naps.
