00:01 - 00:06
Good morning and welcome english 13 02 students,
00:06 - 00:10
I am Professor scott and today we're going to talk about the short story unit.
00:10 - 00:15
Today we are going to talk about the short story unit in
00:15 - 00:19
this english composition class so what you see on the screen,
00:19 - 00:24
Welcome to Composition Composition to which is english
00:24 - 00:26
13 owes to the short story unit.
00:27 - 00:29
So I want to kind of preview the information
00:29 - 00:32
that is found on blackboard that you want to be
00:32 - 00:38
sure that you look for as you approach the short story unit in the english 13 02 class.
00:38 - 00:41
In this unit on short story students will do the following.
00:41 - 00:44
You're going to read and study terms from the textbook,
00:44 - 00:48
read and study assigned stories, complete quizzes,
00:48 - 00:52
complete a unit test and you will write and submit a critical analysis essay
00:52 - 00:57
based on one of the short stories listed on the critical analysis instructions.
00:57 - 01:00
No more than two students can select a particular
01:00 - 01:04
story and there will be a separate video that
01:04 - 01:06
goes into a little bit more detail on the
01:06 - 01:11
critical analysis instructions upon completion of this unit,
01:11 - 01:14
students will be able to synthesize information,
01:14 - 01:17
develop ideas within written communication and
01:17 - 01:20
consider different points of view.
01:20 - 01:26
So for the short story unit in English 1302 there are three stories.
01:26 - 01:30
I want you to focus on the story of an hour by Kate Chopin.
01:30 - 01:34
One of these days by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
01:34 - 01:39
and Miss Brill by Katherine Man's man's field.
01:39 - 01:42
I'm trying to talk too quickly this morning.
01:42 - 01:47
These are required readings for the short story unit, they are required,
01:47 - 01:52
there will be quizzes on blackboard for each one of these,
01:52 - 01:56
all three of these short stories will also be part of the short
01:56 - 02:00
story unit test and you'll see them again on the final exam.
02:01 - 02:09
The Story of an Hour by kate Chopin is um in the online english textbook.
02:09 - 02:11
However, I found this website,
02:11 - 02:18
I'm kind of testing out um at the very top you see the web address, the allocation,
02:18 - 02:22
it's new to me but it had a list of all of these different
02:22 - 02:27
short stories and the story of an hour kate Chopin is also in there.
02:27 - 02:31
I'm pretty sure one of these days is in there as well.
02:31 - 02:36
All three of these stories should be, you should be able to find them online.
02:36 - 02:37
Alright, so keep that in mind.
02:37 - 02:40
In addition to the short story readings,
02:40 - 02:46
there are terms that I want to to be sure that you look up, you study, you review,
02:46 - 02:47
you understand
02:48 - 02:52
These terms begin on page 56 of our online book and you see
02:52 - 02:55
the link for the online book at the bottom of the power point
02:55 - 03:00
they will be on the unit test. They will be on the final exam.
03:00 - 03:03
I can select from any of these terms to be on the final exam.
03:03 - 03:09
So when you go to the book, look for fiction, narrative, plot, protagonist,
03:09 - 03:14
exposition, conflict, introduction, point of view, climax and denouement.
03:14 - 03:18
Those are the things that you want to be sure that you look for.
03:18 - 03:22
Hopefully this information will be pretty clear to you of
03:22 - 03:24
what you need to do for the short story unit.
03:24 - 03:28
I'm available with um any questions that you may
03:28 - 03:30
have for any questions that you may have,
03:30 - 03:33
so let me know how I can be helpful.
03:33 - 03:35
I hope you have a great semester.
