00:00 - 00:03
So lastly, let's talk about our middle section of the Kay
00:04 - 00:06
where this whole section points to
00:07 - 00:11
and says, and his voice was like the roar of many waters
00:12 - 00:16
on the surface. It's a great and mighty voice like rushing water
00:21 - 00:23
like Niagara Falls.
00:24 - 00:26
Are you guys all sleeping?
00:28 - 00:33
Water's rushing down, crashing into the water and rocks below?
00:33 - 00:35
This is an impressive sound,
00:35 - 00:36
but
00:36 - 00:41
that's not only what revelation is talking about here. I think this is part of it.
00:41 - 00:44
It is a magnificent voice if we actually heard it,
00:44 - 00:47
but there's something deeper than just a strong sound.
00:48 - 00:50
If water is coming out of his mouth,
00:50 - 00:53
what's the effect of water coming out of his mouth?
00:53 - 00:55
Biblically speaking,
00:55 - 00:58
we've seen this in our studies through the last few books. We've done.
00:59 - 01:01
What does water do
01:01 - 01:02
in the Bible?
01:03 - 01:05
Water in the Bible is cleansing.
01:06 - 01:09
The fire comes from his eyes that is refining and
01:09 - 01:11
there is water from his mouth that is cleansing.
01:13 - 01:15
So Jesus has finished his work.
01:15 - 01:19
He's ascended up to heaven and now he's going to cleanse the earth.
01:19 - 01:22
He cleanses it with his word.
01:22 - 01:26
When the word is preached, it is the effect of cleansing.
01:26 - 01:28
And this is still true today.
01:28 - 01:32
If you go somewhere and preach the word of God, it's going to rile people up,
01:32 - 01:33
they might become angry.
01:34 - 01:39
His word is powerful and it goes forth and cleanses things and it's fire
01:39 - 01:40
and go
01:40 - 01:43
and it's fire and goes forth and burns things up.
01:44 - 01:46
Jesus starts this cleansing right away.
01:46 - 01:50
It as the next two chapters in revelation to each of these seven churches,
01:50 - 01:52
he says to them shape up.
01:52 - 01:55
I have this against you. You're doing OK.
01:55 - 01:58
Let's deal with the Harlot over here. That's what he's doing.
01:58 - 02:01
He's cleansing, he's cleaning up his churches.
02:01 - 02:05
This water and fire are both in a sense, cleansing.
02:05 - 02:08
You have some cloth that you want to clean, you use water.
02:08 - 02:12
If you have some metal thing that you want to clean up, you use fire,
02:12 - 02:13
it burns off the drops.
02:14 - 02:17
These are two cleansing agents and they are
02:17 - 02:19
the two cleansing agents that we learned about.
02:19 - 02:20
In Leviticus.
02:21 - 02:21
In Leviticus.
02:21 - 02:26
We read all kinds of instances where you wash your feet, you wash your garment,
02:26 - 02:27
you wash up animals.
02:27 - 02:31
And if there's a bronze pot, you could cleanse it by fire.
02:31 - 02:35
If you had a priest daughter that was profane herself,
02:35 - 02:37
you would burn her up with fire.
02:38 - 02:42
So both of those cleansing agents look from Leviticus are mentioned here
02:42 - 02:46
and they are part of the ascended work of Jesus to cleanse the world.
02:48 - 02:51
We can see this wa this river of water.
02:51 - 02:51
Cleansing,
02:51 - 02:56
start way back in the Bible and it gets bigger and bigger and better and better.
02:56 - 02:57
We learned about
02:57 - 02:59
the labor of cleansing
02:59 - 03:04
long time ago in the Tabernacle that water was still, it didn't move.
03:04 - 03:09
And we talked about a little bit the same labor in the temple,
03:09 - 03:13
but now it's bigger and there are actually 10 labors placed on chariots
03:14 - 03:17
and that placing them on chariots gave the symbolism.
03:17 - 03:19
It didn't actually look like flowing water,
03:19 - 03:22
but a chariot that moves down and these labors are on it.
03:22 - 03:27
It was to symbolize that it is mo moving and flowing from the temple.
03:27 - 03:32
Then if we keep going in temple imagery in the Ezekiel's vision of the temple,
03:32 - 03:35
the river flows all the way from the temple out to the dead sea.
03:36 - 03:38
And then here in revelation,
03:38 - 03:41
the rivers run down the streets of New Jerusalem all the way
03:41 - 03:45
to the ends of the world roof will get to that eventually.
03:45 - 03:49
But this is the progression of this stream of water that's coming out of
03:49 - 03:51
hip from his voice.
03:52 - 03:54
So the stream of water,
03:54 - 03:58
the cleansing word of God is flowing forth to cleanse the world.
03:58 - 04:00
And it's the word that does that
04:00 - 04:03
and it's so easy. At least for me to forget that
04:04 - 04:08
so often, even when we have good intentions, we wanna set up icons,
04:08 - 04:10
we want to run for political office,
04:10 - 04:13
we wanna have Christian music artists take over.
04:13 - 04:16
We want to change the world through these things.
04:17 - 04:22
But it's the word of God, the scriptures taught and expounded on as they are
04:22 - 04:26
that have this effect. Actually, there's nothing wrong with those things.
04:26 - 04:28
But the word of God is the thing that
04:28 - 04:31
actually can move mountains and change the world.
04:32 - 04:37
The central aspect of this whole passage today is not what Jesus looks like,
04:37 - 04:39
but what he sounds like.
04:39 - 04:42
It's not a picture of Jesus like we saw last week.
04:42 - 04:48
It's the voice, the voice that has been transcribed into his word that we are to hear.
04:49 - 04:51
That always is the most important
04:52 - 04:54
Deuteronomy 4 15 says, therefore,
04:55 - 04:58
watch yourselves very carefully since you saw no form on
04:58 - 05:00
that day that the Lord spoke to you at ho
05:00 - 05:02
out of the midst of the fire.
05:03 - 05:09
The voice even back then was what was to be listened to. We live by faith, not by sight
05:09 - 05:11
like we read earlier,
05:11 - 05:16
John rejoices that the voice is here because the bride is going to be called
05:16 - 05:19
as the bride. We need to be attuned to what his word says.
05:19 - 05:24
We need to hear his voice through the Bible. Each and every day
05:24 - 05:27
you have a big meeting coming up at work and you need to get there early.
05:27 - 05:31
Too bad, get up earlier, take the time, hear his voice.
05:31 - 05:35
Kids are up early again, food got spilled everywhere you have to grocery shop,
05:35 - 05:38
there's laundry stuff is piling up.
05:38 - 05:41
Who cares? Hear and learn his voice.
05:41 - 05:45
You could only get an early tea time and you don't want to wake up earlier. Suck it up.
05:45 - 05:49
Buttercup. Get up early, immerse yourself in his word.
05:49 - 05:52
Immerse yourself in the bride groom. That's calling.
05:52 - 05:57
It needs to be our number one priority and not only our priority,
05:57 - 05:59
it should be our number one desire.
05:59 - 06:01
Like we talked about last week,
06:01 - 06:03
we need to be a bride that desires our bride
06:03 - 06:06
groom's voice and then to meet him in the flesh.
06:07 - 06:11
How can we hear him and recognize his voice if we never hear it,
06:11 - 06:16
if we never engage and absorb ourselves in his word and his presence,
06:16 - 06:20
John 10, we just read this in our bible study yesterday.
06:20 - 06:23
The sheep hear his voice and he calls his own sheep by name
06:23 - 06:26
and leads them out when he is brought out all of his own,
06:26 - 06:31
he goes before them and the sheep follow him for, they know his voice.
06:31 - 06:32
A stranger.
06:32 - 06:34
They will not follow but they will flee from him
06:34 - 06:37
for they do not know the voice of strangers.
06:38 - 06:41
Do we know his voice or do we know the voice of strangers?
06:41 - 06:44
All those voices that we listened to earlier?
06:44 - 06:48
We knew many of them because they have distinctive voices and you've
06:48 - 06:51
heard them over and over in all different areas of our lives.
06:51 - 06:56
Jesus's voice is distinctive too in that it speaks truth like no one else can
06:57 - 07:00
we need to hear it in all aspects of our lives.
07:00 - 07:02
When we encounter something in our lives,
07:02 - 07:06
we can hear Jesus speaking through his word that pops in our head
07:06 - 07:10
in that moment because we have bathed ourselves in his word daily.
07:11 - 07:15
We know our shepherd's voice and would listen and follow it anywhere
07:15 - 07:21
the bride groom is calling us. Are we listening? Do we even recognize his voice?
07:23 - 07:26
One last interesting part of this voice, this powerful,
07:26 - 07:29
strong voice that cleanses and changes the world.
07:30 - 07:34
Well, when John hears this voice in revelation, one,
07:34 - 07:36
something unexpected happens.
07:36 - 07:39
Let's read it again because it's really easy to gloss over it.
07:39 - 07:41
Revelation 1 12 said,
07:41 - 07:45
then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me. And on turning,
07:45 - 07:48
I saw seven golden lamp stands.
07:49 - 07:55
When John turns his first sight of Jesus is actually a glimpse of the church.
07:55 - 08:00
This is pretty humbling. If you think about it, this voice is so important.
08:00 - 08:03
It's the central thing in this passage and throughout the Bible.
08:04 - 08:08
And the first sight of this voice is us, the church,
08:08 - 08:13
the church of holt and shines the light of Jesus in the world.
08:13 - 08:17
This is not reading too much into this because in revelation 19,
08:17 - 08:20
this idea has continued and it's made even stronger.
08:20 - 08:20
I think
08:20 - 08:25
it says in verse six, then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude,
08:25 - 08:30
like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peels of thunder crying out.
08:30 - 08:34
Hallelujah. For the Lord, our God, the Almighty reins.
08:34 - 08:37
So the voice of many Waters is
08:37 - 08:40
the voice of the great multitude.
08:40 - 08:42
What we just saw is the description of Jesus
08:42 - 08:45
is now described as the great multitude that is
08:46 - 08:48
sending forth their voice.
08:49 - 08:53
What this shows is that all of us are voices of Christ.
08:53 - 08:55
We are the voice of Christ in the sense that there
08:55 - 08:58
isn't anywhere where you can go and physically hear Jesus's voice.
08:59 - 09:01
But he has multitudes of voices.
09:01 - 09:06
Every faithful pastor, every faithful Christian is at one time or another.
09:06 - 09:07
One of these voices.
09:08 - 09:10
What do these voices do? Then?
09:10 - 09:12
The same as what Jesus's voice?
09:12 - 09:15
Did they cleanse and change the world like we talked about.
09:16 - 09:19
We need to know Jesus's voice though through his word,
09:19 - 09:24
then we need to go forth and ourselves be that voice to the world.
09:24 - 09:29
If we go preach God's word, the truest truth like we talked about last week,
09:29 - 09:31
people will be moved by it.
09:31 - 09:35
They might not like it. They might say, who are you to say that I can't live this way?
09:35 - 09:38
Who are you to say that I'm a sinner that needs to repent.
09:38 - 09:40
Well, actually I'm the voice of Christ.
09:41 - 09:43
I am but a drop of water.
09:43 - 09:48
But if we all boldly proclaim the truth, we are like the roar of many waters.
09:48 - 09:51
Stagger Falls has nothing on all of us.
09:52 - 09:54
And this will have the effect of cleansing.
09:55 - 10:01
The word of God is powerful. The word of God is like water that sweeps away the wicked.
10:01 - 10:04
We have been given the flaming sword to cut people up.
10:04 - 10:09
We have been given the privilege to be a part of Jesus's voice, this water.
10:09 - 10:14
I believe that the church has much more power and potential than any of us believe.
10:15 - 10:16
I don't accept that.
10:16 - 10:18
We need to sit around and wait for the world to get
10:18 - 10:21
more and more wicked and wait for Jesus to come back.
10:21 - 10:24
I don't believe that that theology is actually found in the Bible.
10:24 - 10:29
What is found is that we have a voice of the king of kings.
10:29 - 10:32
We can change the world, but we must
10:32 - 10:33
know his voice.
10:34 - 10:36
It needs to be more recognizable than any other name.
10:36 - 10:39
Any other voice to us more than Kermit the frog,
10:39 - 10:42
more than Frank Sinatra or James Earl Jones.
10:42 - 10:49
Only then when we truly fully know it, can we mimic it to the world? We are his voice.
10:50 - 10:52
Revelation 19 1 says after this,
10:52 - 10:56
I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven.
10:56 - 11:01
Crying out. Hallelujah, salvation and glory and power belong to our God.
11:01 - 11:01
Let's pray
11:05 - 11:07
dear me, father. We thank you for
11:07 - 11:11
the amazing privilege that it is to be a part of your voice. Lord,
11:13 - 11:16
it's humbling to think about what that actually means.
11:16 - 11:17
Lord, I pray that
11:18 - 11:21
you will find us worthy, that we will know your name,
11:21 - 11:23
that we will know your voice and we will
11:23 - 11:25
follow it and that's what we will proclaim Lord.
11:25 - 11:31
So it won't be our own voice, our own words, Lord. But it will truly be your word.
11:31 - 11:33
That is truer than truth.
11:34 - 11:39
We thank you Lord for your word today in revelation. Thank you for how it
11:39 - 11:41
intertwines with the whole Bible Lord.
11:41 - 11:45
And that it all becomes hopefully clearer and clearer to us
11:45 - 11:48
what your word is telling us and who you are.
11:48 - 11:50
Thank you Lord for being our holy warrior
11:51 - 11:52
in Jesus name. Amen.
