00:01 - 00:02
Hi,
00:02 - 00:09
I am Kirsten lambert and today I am going to be talking with you all about
00:09 - 00:13
mediation analysis and specifically we're going to be
00:13 - 00:17
talking about mediation analysis in psycho metrics.
00:18 - 00:20
Um So let's get started
00:20 - 00:22
when looking at data.
00:22 - 00:29
Typically researchers are focusing on an independent and a dependent variable,
00:29 - 00:32
but not everything is always that simple.
00:33 - 00:34
So sad.
00:35 - 00:38
Sometimes there is an intervening variable
00:39 - 00:43
that is where mediation analysis comes in.
00:46 - 00:53
Like I just stated mediation analysis looks at an intervening variable.
00:53 - 00:58
So when a researcher is using this type of analysis,
00:58 - 01:03
they are using a regression in order to evaluate the
01:03 - 01:08
mechanism through which an independent variable known as X,
01:08 - 01:10
affects
01:10 - 01:14
a dependent variable, which is known as why.
01:18 - 01:23
So with that I want to take some time to discuss
01:23 - 01:31
some other terms that are interchangeable when using mediation analysis.
01:32 - 01:38
So the first one um of these is the predictor.
01:39 - 01:45
A predictor is known as a independent variable or X.
01:47 - 01:51
The second term is the outcome variable.
01:52 - 01:58
This is also known as the dependent variable or why
02:01 - 02:04
The final term is the mediator.
02:05 - 02:11
The mediator is the additional intervening variable that is collected in the data.
02:13 - 02:18
The mediator creates an indirect path between the predictor
02:18 - 02:20
and the outcome variable
02:20 - 02:22
also known as
02:23 - 02:28
the independent and dependent variable, or X and Y.
02:30 - 02:37
So let's talk about why it's important or why we should even use mediation analysis.
02:38 - 02:43
Um The purpose of using mediation analysis is to better
02:43 - 02:48
understand how a predictor and an outcome variable are related.
02:49 - 02:52
So in other words, we want to
02:53 - 02:58
have helped a researcher or psychometric mission
02:59 - 03:03
um be able to understand how the independent and the
03:03 - 03:10
dependent variables are related when there isn't an obvious connection
03:11 - 03:15
mediation analysis assists researchers in finding
03:15 - 03:19
that missing links between the independent
03:19 - 03:25
and the dependent variables also known as our predictor and outcome variables.
03:26 - 03:30
Now this is so important because it is going to help the
03:30 - 03:35
researchers truly understand the reasoning behind
03:35 - 03:37
the outcome once they've found that.
03:41 - 03:45
So we're gonna break down mediation analysis a little bit more.
03:47 - 03:51
When conducting mediation analysis,
03:51 - 03:56
an individual conduct a three regression analyses.
03:56 - 03:59
Those analyses are the relationship between
03:59 - 04:02
the predictor and the outcome variable.
04:02 - 04:03
So X. To Y.
04:04 - 04:09
The relationship between the predictor and the mediator. So x. two m.
04:10 - 04:13
And then finally the relationship of the predictor
04:13 - 04:16
and the mediator on the outcome burial.
04:16 - 04:19
So X and M. Two Y.
04:21 - 04:25
Now this is illustrated in the video next to
04:26 - 04:28
the definition of our breakdown
04:30 - 04:32
as you can see and then if you're following along
04:32 - 04:36
on our hand out it is also in figure one.
04:39 - 04:45
So I know the jargon of statistics and psycho metrics can get very um confusing.
04:45 - 04:51
So I wanted to help everybody um better understand mediation analysis.
04:51 - 04:57
And so I think it's really helpful to be able to use a real life example.
04:57 - 05:02
So a common one that is used throughout academic literature
05:03 - 05:08
is the one that we see on the screen or
05:09 - 05:10
right now.
05:11 - 05:12
Um
05:14 - 05:19
And that is the relationship between grades and happiness.
05:20 - 05:27
So one person might hypothesize that the higher the grade and an individual
05:27 - 05:32
has in school may be related to a higher level of happiness.
05:32 - 05:37
As one may take a deeper look at this relationship.
05:37 - 05:43
one may be able to identify an intervening variable that may affect the happiness.
05:43 - 05:46
Now, what's typically seen in again,
05:46 - 05:53
the academic literature is this intervening variable known as self esteem,
05:53 - 05:57
and you can see that in the second part of that picture and figure
06:01 - 06:05
the self esteem of an individual can affect the relationship
06:05 - 06:09
between the students grade and their level of happiness.
06:10 - 06:13
So, let's take this into a little example here,
06:14 - 06:20
let's say we have student A who has great grades, but really poor self esteem,
06:21 - 06:26
they may have a lower level of happiness compared to student B.
06:27 - 06:29
Student B has a moderate
06:30 - 06:35
level of grades, moderate grades, but very strong self esteem.
06:35 - 06:39
So when comparing student A and student B,
06:39 - 06:44
their levels of happiness could be equal, yet their grades be very different,
06:45 - 06:50
and we can see that this can be affected by their self esteem.
06:52 - 06:57
So this shows that there is that direct relationship between
06:57 - 07:00
grades and the level of happiness.
07:00 - 07:03
But when you take that closer look of
07:03 - 07:06
all the factors affecting the students happiness,
07:06 - 07:09
you can see that there is an intervening
07:09 - 07:12
variable which is also known as our mediator.
07:15 - 07:19
Once you've completed your mediation analysis.
07:19 - 07:25
So you're three regressions, um we can start assessing the data.
07:25 - 07:29
And so it's important to start with identifying
07:29 - 07:33
the relationship between the predictor and the outcome
07:33 - 07:37
variable. So again, that's X to Y.
07:43 - 07:49
If there is no significant relationship between these two variables,
07:49 - 07:52
the independent the dependent variable.
07:52 - 07:57
There is nothing that can be determined as a mediating variable
07:59 - 08:01
because if there's no connection between X and Y,
08:01 - 08:11
there's not gonna be a third enter um a third variable entering the situation.
08:12 - 08:15
However, if there's a significant relationship,
08:15 - 08:19
a researcher can continue to assess the next relationship,
08:25 - 08:31
that next relationship is to determine the relationship
08:31 - 08:35
between the predictor or independent variable and the mediator
08:38 - 08:41
without a relationship to the predictor and intervening
08:41 - 08:46
variable can not cannot be a mediator.
08:46 - 08:48
If there is a relationship,
08:48 - 08:52
then a researcher can continue to assess the final relationship
09:02 - 09:08
if there is a significant relationship between the 1st and 2nd tests. So again,
09:08 - 09:12
the independent independent variable and the
09:12 - 09:16
independent variable to the mediator.
09:17 - 09:21
Then a researcher will be able to determine how the predictor
09:21 - 09:26
and the mediator are both related to the outcome variable.
09:27 - 09:29
This is shown
09:29 - 09:34
by a weakened relationship between the predictor and the outcome variable.
09:36 - 09:39
When there is a strong enough mediating relationship,
09:39 - 09:42
the relationship between the predictor and
09:42 - 09:45
the outcome variable can even disappear.
09:46 - 09:50
This occurs because there is another variable,
09:50 - 09:54
the mediator that is impacting the relationship.
10:01 - 10:03
So let's discuss how
10:04 - 10:10
the use of mediation analysis occurs in psycho metrics.
10:10 - 10:15
But first, let's discuss what psycho metrics is
10:16 - 10:21
statistics and psycho metrics are often seen as synonymous fields.
10:21 - 10:26
Although they use similar tools, these fields are not the same
10:26 - 10:27
psycho metrics.
10:27 - 10:32
Is the measurement of a human characteristics, such as behavior or health
10:33 - 10:34
statistics, focuses
10:34 - 10:38
specifically on analyzing numerical data.
10:43 - 10:45
So why is it important to understand
10:45 - 10:49
mediation analysis as a psychometric shin psychometric.
10:49 - 10:54
Asians use many tests and statistics to analyze the data they collect.
10:54 - 11:00
Mediation analysis is one of the ways in which they analyze their data.
11:00 - 11:06
Without it, they would lock the ability to see all relationships among variables
11:15 - 11:23
and that concludes the presentation for mediation analysis in psycho metrics.
11:23 - 11:24
Thank you
11:25 - 11:26
very much.
