00:02 - 00:03
ingredients. Dr Perez.
00:03 - 00:05
My name is Joshua Shamley, and today I will be
00:05 - 00:10
presenting to you my portrayal of an analyzation of men's
00:10 - 00:11
health magazine.
00:15 - 00:17
So what is Men's Health Magazine?
00:18 - 00:20
Well, if you haven't seen it on your local local
00:20 - 00:25
grocery store shelves or in basically any retail marketplace, Men's
00:26 - 00:29
Health magazine is one of the most popular men's magazine
00:30 - 00:33
brands. And as a quote from the executive writer himself,
00:34 - 00:38
it is a brand for active, successful professional men who
00:39 - 00:42
want greater control over their physical, mental and emotional lives.
00:44 - 00:48
And what a lot of the concepts and articles that
00:48 - 00:52
are written are to try and portray what men should
00:53 - 00:55
look like and how they should act and feel like.
00:59 - 01:03
Now, one of the most I catching portions of Men's
01:04 - 01:06
Health magazine is going to be the cover itself.
01:07 - 01:09
And if you look up any of the men's health
01:09 - 01:13
magazines on Google images, well, you'll first notice is kind
01:13 - 01:15
of like in the photos that I've provided, that they
01:15 - 01:19
are very, um, muscular and very strong looking men.
01:20 - 01:23
They usually have their shirts off, and what the magazine
01:24 - 01:26
is trying to do is not only catch everyone's eye
01:27 - 01:28
when they first look at it, but is also trying
01:29 - 01:33
to show what their perception of what a healthy male
01:33 - 01:38
looks like, whether very physically fit, muscular and of the
01:39 - 01:41
quote it body of what they are trying to portray.
01:45 - 01:48
Some of the sociological concepts that I had noticed when
01:49 - 01:53
looking at the magazine and also their website was first
01:53 - 01:54
off their material culture.
01:56 - 01:58
One of the one of these concepts that I noticed
01:59 - 02:02
was because of not only do they talk about fitness
02:03 - 02:07
and health like you would expect, but they also go
02:07 - 02:13
into various other categories, considering your overall life, technology and
02:13 - 02:17
certain gear that men should have and also category talking
02:17 - 02:20
about style and also another talking about grooming.
02:22 - 02:25
And over all these combined into all these various products
02:26 - 02:32
and services that they recommend that all men should buy
02:33 - 02:37
and when clicking and specifically the style category on their
02:37 - 02:42
website, you'll see and notice that there's multiple different listings
02:42 - 02:48
and two either the top 10 or a series of
02:49 - 02:52
what's the best shoe or the best T shirt to
02:52 - 02:56
buy the best watch to buy for men, and what
02:56 - 02:59
this is doing is very well poor, trained the material
03:00 - 03:03
culture that you need to have a certain product or
03:03 - 03:07
a certain, UM, style of close to where that will
03:07 - 03:11
make you look and fit in with the culture around.
03:11 - 03:15
You sure that I noticed or the second concept that
03:16 - 03:20
I noticed was the ideal culture, And this kind of
03:20 - 03:22
goes back to the idea of what their overall goal
03:22 - 03:25
is is to portray what the ideal man should look
03:26 - 03:31
like. And it's present in this magazine because they have
03:31 - 03:35
all these articles talking about what a man should look
03:35 - 03:38
like and how they should feel and what it is
03:38 - 03:43
that there version and society's version of a man should
03:43 - 03:44
really be like.
03:46 - 03:51
And when going into these articles, you start to really
03:51 - 03:54
talking about like how a healthy lifestyle should be versus
03:55 - 03:59
an unhealthy lifestyle and what practices should be taken in
03:59 - 04:03
order to live these lifestyles that they say are best
04:04 - 04:09
for men the next to you that I that I
04:09 - 04:13
noticed within the magazine was the first of which was
04:13 - 04:18
stereotyping, and one aspect within the magazine is that they
04:18 - 04:22
are trying to stereotype what men should look like, and
04:23 - 04:27
even though within the magazines you know, all guys would
04:27 - 04:29
probably want to have a giant six pack and giant
04:30 - 04:32
and giant biceps and be able to lift £350.
04:34 - 04:36
But realistically, not every man is capable of that.
04:36 - 04:38
And everybody's body is different.
04:38 - 04:42
So being what they say is quote healthy may not
04:43 - 04:46
be possible for some men, while for other other men
04:46 - 04:48
it is very obtainable for them.
04:50 - 04:55
And the fourth concept that I found was reference group,
04:56 - 04:58
and especially when discussing anything within the media.
04:59 - 05:01
A reference group is usually what you're talking about.
05:02 - 05:07
Where they are portraying what a quote reference should be
05:07 - 05:10
for everyone else is standard and how they should try
05:10 - 05:11
and live their lives to look like.
05:12 - 05:15
So the reference group of men's health is that everyone
05:16 - 05:19
needs to be very fit, living a healthy lifestyle, eating
05:19 - 05:24
the right things, live living and wearing certain clothes and
05:26 - 05:31
living to certain standards of what they think is ideal
05:31 - 05:32
for a man.
05:36 - 05:37
And the less.
05:37 - 05:41
And I think the greatest factor in concept that I
05:41 - 05:44
found within the magazine is that of social influence are
05:45 - 05:46
also known as peer pressure.
05:47 - 05:51
And with all of these magazine covers, you notice that
05:52 - 05:53
all these men's are very fit.
05:53 - 05:57
And one, there's kind of two options that can kind
05:57 - 05:59
of come out of reading this magazine, the first of
06:00 - 06:02
which would be the person that sees that and thinks,
06:03 - 06:06
you know, those goals are way too impossible for me
06:06 - 06:09
to try to obtain, and it really kind of discourages
06:10 - 06:13
them and kind of sets them in a point where
06:13 - 06:16
they don't think that they are like everyone else and
06:17 - 06:18
that they're kind of a outlier.
06:19 - 06:23
Whereas in reality scene, people that look like what they
06:24 - 06:27
have on the cover of the magazines are really kind
06:27 - 06:30
of the allies themselves, because not every single guy looks
06:30 - 06:32
like that and can obtain a body that looks like
06:32 - 06:38
that. And so the second option of the results that
06:38 - 06:41
may come out of this peer pressure is that it
06:41 - 06:45
may motivate a guy to go out and want to
06:45 - 06:47
work out if he's been living an unhealthy lifestyle and
06:48 - 06:50
not working out and not eating correctly.
06:50 - 06:55
And sometimes reading this magazine can give you medical facts
06:55 - 06:57
that may be able to help you to change their
06:57 - 07:01
lifestyles in a way that can positively change your lifestyle
07:02 - 07:03
and make you a healthier person.
07:08 - 07:08
Thank you.
07:08 - 07:11
Very. Thank you very much for reading over my presentation.
07:12 - 07:13
And here are my resources.
07:14 - 07:15
Thank you very much.
