00:01 - 00:04
Welcome to the video on Jim Crow Part two.
00:04 - 00:06
Okay, so let's get started.
00:06 - 00:07
Um today,
00:07 - 00:10
what we're trying to tackle is this question of why
00:10 - 00:13
is segregation bad even if it is actually equal quality?
00:13 - 00:18
Like so let's say in this fake world that we're creating um segregation exists,
00:18 - 00:20
but it's actually equal, right?
00:20 - 00:23
So everything that black people have is the same as what white people have.
00:23 - 00:24
Um
00:24 - 00:28
Would it still be bad then? Right? This is the question that we're trying to tackle.
00:28 - 00:33
Um we know that segregation itself refers to the separation, right?
00:33 - 00:37
Jim Crow laws refers to the the laws enforcing the separation of the
00:37 - 00:38
races. Right?
00:39 - 00:39
So,
00:41 - 00:44
was the problem that the segregation was bad because there was
00:44 - 00:47
an equal quality or was it because of something else?
00:47 - 00:50
So, obviously, the fact that it wasn't equal is a huge problem.
00:50 - 00:52
So that in and of itself is a huge, huge problem.
00:53 - 00:55
But today we're creating a fake world, right?
00:55 - 00:58
There is no way that this world could ever exist, right?
00:58 - 01:00
This is a completely hypothetical world
01:00 - 01:02
where segregation exists,
01:02 - 01:03
but it's actually equal.
01:04 - 01:06
The question is, what would happen then
01:07 - 01:10
what happens when we don't know people well,
01:10 - 01:12
or we don't get to know people is what ends
01:12 - 01:15
up happening is our mind likes to categorize information.
01:15 - 01:20
So we try to put people into groups, right? We try to assume things about them.
01:20 - 01:24
And if you don't know someone, all you have to go off of is assumptions,
01:24 - 01:27
rumors and stereotypes, right?
01:27 - 01:29
So we end up doing if you create a generalization
01:29 - 01:31
about people, right? Because you don't know that.
01:32 - 01:33
Um and in segregation,
01:33 - 01:36
this applies to complete races because the races weren't interacting,
01:36 - 01:38
they weren't mixing, right?
01:38 - 01:40
So what ends up happening is that they create
01:40 - 01:43
these assumptions and these generalizations about these other people,
01:43 - 01:44
right?
01:45 - 01:49
Those assumptions end up leading to the ability of
01:49 - 01:51
people to project their own issues onto those races.
01:51 - 01:53
So, for example,
01:53 - 01:57
if let's say a neighborhood is not doing well or people feel like they're poor,
01:57 - 01:58
they could say like, oh,
01:58 - 02:01
it's because there's an african american neighborhood nearby, right?
02:01 - 02:03
This is clearly false, but
02:03 - 02:06
um it's a way for them to project their own issues onto
02:07 - 02:08
another group, right?
02:08 - 02:13
So when you don't interact, it gives the opportunity for xenophobia,
02:13 - 02:18
which is fear of other people or racism to develop, right?
02:18 - 02:21
Racism develops because people don't know the other race well,
02:21 - 02:24
or they're determined to be racist.
02:24 - 02:25
Once you get to know someone,
02:26 - 02:29
it's very hard to keep going with stereotypes in your mind.
02:29 - 02:31
It's very hard to hold those forward because
02:32 - 02:32
um
02:33 - 02:37
your interactions with them can contradict your thoughts in your head.
02:37 - 02:38
So
02:38 - 02:43
the reason why segregation is still bad, even if it was unequal is because
02:43 - 02:47
of the fact that it creates these stereotypes and it doesn't allow for interaction,
02:47 - 02:48
which creates more racism.
02:48 - 02:49
So
02:49 - 02:51
this is the part two video.
02:51 - 02:52
What you're gonna do now is you're going
02:52 - 02:54
to jump into google classroom and you're going
02:54 - 02:57
to write 200 words explaining why you think
02:57 - 02:59
in connection with the first video lesson,
02:59 - 03:02
um, segregation is that even if
03:02 - 03:07
even if it is equal, if you disagree with this, that's totally fine,
03:07 - 03:11
just write out your thoughts and why you think this way okay, have a great day.
