  1. Hello if you've clicked on this, and that means that
  2. you are ready to start your culturally responsive teaching and
  3. learning journey.
  4. Now, as I talked through each book, I want you
  5. to really think about and be really reflective on if
  6. it is the right book for you.
  7. You know, we can say that about shoes.
  8. We can say that about clothes, you know.
  9. Are these the right will ends?
  10. This is the right look.
  11. We have to say that same thing about books and
  12. especially culturally responsive ones.
  13. I don't want you to teach.
  14. Choose something because you think it sounds good because everybody
  15. else was choosing it.
  16. I want you to really, really think about the books
  17. that are being offered.
  18. And you have to make a decision and decide where
  19. you are on this journey so that you can get
  20. the most out of this.
  21. Okay, so let's get started Less fine.
  22. The best choice book for you, The very first both
  23. that we're gonna look at is called how to teach
  24. students who don't look like you buy Bunny and Davis.
  25. This, when I would say, is the beginning start of
  26. your cultural awareness journey um was she does in this
  27. book is she provides definitions for cultural responsive teaching.
  28. What it is, what it is not.
  29. And she also has your journal and think about the
  30. process along the way.
  31. She does give you strategies that you can try but
  32. nothing too overwhelming just things that can help make you
  33. the better you.
  34. So this is what I would like to start off
  35. with because even the title was great.
  36. How to teach students Who Don't look like you.
  37. This is not just how to teach one ethnic group
  38. of students.
  39. This is any group of students that look very different
  40. from you.
  41. OK, so let's keep going.
  42. Let's go to the next book.
  43. This book is we got this by Cornelius Minor.
  44. Now I say this is the next step of your
  45. journey because what community is minor is gonna do is
  46. he's going to teach you how to listen and see
  47. Children who don't look like you or who sometimes look
  48. like you.
  49. He's going to teach you to kind of think beyond
  50. and give you strategies and help because one part of
  51. the culture responsive teaching peace is to actually be a
  52. listener to be the best listener for our Children so
  53. that you can hear them in ways that you weren't
  54. prepared to hear them before.
  55. Okay, let's look at the next book.
  56. The next book is called Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson.
  57. Now, if you've heard the term systemic racism and you're
  58. trying to figure out what that means, then this is
  59. the book for you.
  60. You also heard the term from preschool pre school to
  61. prison pipeline, and you've been trying to figure out what
  62. in the world is that mean?
  63. Everybody keeps talking about it, but what does that mean
  64. than just mercy is the right book for you?
  65. Because what Bryan Stevenson does is he's gonna break down
  66. with systemic racism is he's going to show you how
  67. this preschool to Pipeline on Theory works, and he is
  68. going to do it with riel, live accounts and stories
  69. so that you can understand exactly what he's talking about.
  70. OK, let's keep going on the next step.
  71. If you look at this book and you look at
  72. the title and you cringe me and white supremacy, then
  73. you you should, um, part of culture.
  74. Responsive teaching is getting outside of your comfort zone, and
  75. this book is meant to be outside of your comfort
  76. zone. But I have to tell you a secret.
  77. So get a little closer come a little closer.
  78. Yeah. Even though this book was written by a black
  79. female Layla Sayyed is actually a book written for white
  80. people. That's why it's called me and white supremacy.
  81. You might have a concept of what you think.
  82. White supremacy is in your mind.
  83. What she's gonna do is break that down for you
  84. so that you can understand it's day today, things that
  85. we take for granted.
  86. So what she has done is she has set it
  87. up. Where's the 28 day journaling process where you read
  88. you journal?
  89. You read your journal, you process and you don't take
  90. that journey alone.
  91. So if you're ready and you need to be ready,
  92. because this is one of those books that it requires
  93. you to do the hard work.
  94. If you're ready, then this is the book choice for
  95. you. Now the next book is called Stamped First Office,
  96. written by Jason Reynolds.
  97. Anything written by Jason Reynolds is going to be amazing,
  98. but what he does in this book is he that
  99. has you think about systemic racism in history.
  100. He starts all the way at the beginning of historical
  101. happenings up into the present day timeline of events.
  102. And he has this kind of thing through how races,
  103. races, practice.
  104. This have systemically been put in place throughout history and
  105. how the stories of who tells that and who gets
  106. to decide kind of shape us.
  107. Now. You have to be ready for this book because
  108. it's not an easy book, just like the one previous
  109. one. It's not easy book.
  110. This is not where I would start my journey.
  111. But this is definitely a place that I would go
  112. if I already know what cultural responsive teaching is.
  113. I've already worked on me a little bit.
  114. Now I'm ready to kind of understand and see past
  115. that to see other people's perspectives, because this is what
  116. is going to do is gonna take your perspective of
  117. what you've gotten in school about historical happenings, and it's
  118. going to completely change that.
  119. So you need to be ready for that for that.
  120. That piece of information now, This is also a next
  121. level type of book.
  122. This is we want to do more than survive abolitionist
  123. teaching and the pursuit of educational freedom written by patina
  124. l love.
  125. Now, if you've ever watched a podcast by her, then
  126. you know that she does not care about sparing your
  127. feelings was she cares about in this book in particular
  128. is she wants you to be a abolitionist teacher and
  129. abolitionist teachers, one who's gonna advocate for their students.
  130. They're gonna change your lifestyle.
  131. So when you think of a diet and you think,
  132. hear people say you can diet if you want to,
  133. or you could do a lifestyle change this book is
  134. the lifestyle change, and she does not sugar coat or
  135. how you need to, you know, consider this lifestyle change
  136. is 100% the lifestyle change.
  137. So if you're ready to change what you say, how
  138. you say it when you say it, who you say
  139. it to, This is the story that will help you
  140. kind of reach that journey.
  141. Okay, then.
  142. This is the last book that is an option.
  143. I want to bring it up.
  144. This book was actually put in my hand this couple
  145. weeks ago By Debra Reese.
  146. This year it's by Sarah Ah Mead, and it's called
  147. Being the change Lessons and strategies to Teach social comprehension.
  148. It's a great read.
  149. It is a easy read in the sense that is
  150. going to provide you with strategies, lessons, activities and things
  151. that you can take and do in your classroom tomorrow.
  152. It starts with having kids kind of think about their
  153. identities and build upon that to be them but their
  154. best Selves.
  155. But I left this book for the end for a
  156. reason. Okay, The reason this book is the last book
  157. on this journey is because this book is about Children
  158. working on themselves.
  159. And if you have done the hard work of working
  160. on yourself, then you can ask kids to do the
  161. hard work of working on themselves.
  162. But if you have not decided to take a journey
  163. that leads you down this road of these books, that
  164. puts you in the mind of what is going on
  165. so that you can speak better toe what cultural responsive
  166. teaching is and what cultural responsive learning is.
  167. Then you're not ready for that book to just flip
  168. it back into the classroom yet.
  169. But if you are ready for that, you've done the
  170. hard work.
  171. You're ready for that journey That that is an excellent
  172. choice book for you.
  173. So whatever you decide to do, please know that we
  174. are taking this journey together.
  175. There will be times and parts of it that will
  176. be uncomfortable.
  177. That will take you outside of your box and your
  178. comfort zone.
  179. But at the end of it, you will be a
  180. much better person.
  181. You will be the best.
  182. You so decide which book works for you and let's
  183. start this cultural, responsive teaching and learning journey together by
