  1. Hello, I'm Naomi Temple.
  2. And the topic of chosen today is in Matthew 59.
  3. It reads blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the Children of God.
  4. I really liked this
  5. verse that we studied in this week's readings.
  6. Um And I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on this topic. And so
  7. when I was
  8. studying this topic, I thought, you know, what exactly is peace a peacekeeper?
  9. How, what, what are the signs of a peacemaker?
  10. Um What is peace making?
  11. And so, um I
  12. wanted to share with you some of the things that I found out about peacemaking
  13. that it's an internal process that allows us to
  14. practice restraint when something goes against us either emotionally,
  15. mentally and spiritually.
  16. So it,
  17. it stirs something in opposition, but it starts within.
  18. So there's a couple of qualities that we can develop to
  19. be peacemaker. It's made up as the of the anatomy of a peacemaker.
  20. So the first thing is listening
  21. and listening means paying attention to what people say and
  22. not just thinking about what you're going to say next.
  23. I mean,
  24. you're truly trying to get into their heart and someone who
  25. knows they're being listened to is less likely to get angry.
  26. So you have to put yourself in their shoes, uh,
  27. of what they are really what the message is they're trying to get across.
  28. And that also
  29. entails a self awareness.
  30. So we need to be aware and mindful of what we're seeing and how we're acting
  31. to realize how it comes across the others.
  32. We can come off confrontational,
  33. sometimes not even realizing what we're saying and doing.
  34. Uh we can come off um
  35. you know, with the
  36. air of superiority that you know, turns people off and listening, listening to us.
  37. So we really need to understand how we're saying anything.
  38. If it's gentle, if it's calm
  39. and then of course, empathy is that means that, you know, we
  40. understand and feel what others feel.
  41. So we have to make a, an, a huge effort to imagine their feelings.
  42. And so they know that
  43. we are understanding
  44. um them
  45. when they hear what you say and how you act.
  46. So knowledge is important also
  47. that is a store of information and facts to draw from. But most important
  48. includes spiritual learning and experiences that we can apply and share.
  49. So from our experiences, um we can have a knowledge of how to be a better peacemaker.
  50. And then patience is having that self control and reminding
  51. ourselves that we don't need to allow people to speak,
  52. don't get upset or angry when they say something because often
  53. we want to jump in and correct what they're saying.
  54. We just allow them
  55. to speak freely
  56. and we don't need to raise their voice or intensify our tone.
  57. We can just talk very calm
  58. and gentle,
  59. um decibels and tones.
  60. So,
  61. wisdom is also important for a peacemaker because it
  62. means that we're able to judge what's best to do
  63. it. You know, should we just back off, should we intervene?
  64. Um Should you offer logic,
  65. uh emotional support or maybe it's time for some humor or just testimony?
  66. So the wisdom help ah this by listening to the spirit
  67. and wisdom through experience,
  68. which would be what would be best to utilize in a contentious situation.
  69. And of course,
  70. humility helps us to make sure that we are utilizing the spirit in our interactions.
  71. And that means we have to let go of the pride
  72. or hotness that um disturbs and it disturbs our peace.
  73. So
  74. we should act in that way.
  75. So we do not think ourselves or they will appear that we're
  76. uh higher and mightier than the higher and
  77. mightier than the person we're talking to.
  78. And of course, in these situations,
  79. we have to have absolute faith and trust in Jesus Christ
  80. um in trying to keep his commandments.
  81. And that includes how we treat all people, all kinds of people.
  82. So
  83. that's what peacemaking looks like.
  84. Uh And what it means. And
  85. the second thing
  86. is learning about
  87. what does the blessing mean
  88. they shall be called the Children of God.
  89. And I really like this uh
  90. because
  91. I love and I think that the highest compliment can,
  92. can be is when someone calls us the Children of God, because that means
  93. we are like Him.
  94. We he is a peacemaker and peacemaking is one of the strongest attributes that he
  95. has.
  96. So when we're being peacemakers, we are actually being just like Jesus Christ.
  97. And that is one way that people can tell
  98. the true followers of Jesus Christ is in their ability to peace,
  99. make in contentious situations.
  100. You know, recently we've heard words from our prophet
  101. in conference and he urges us, we are followers of the prince of peace.
  102. And now more than ever, we need the peace only he can bring
  103. and how can we expect peace to exist in the world?
  104. We are not individually seeking peace and harmony.
  105. Uh brothers and sisters, I know what I'm suggesting is not easy,
  106. but followers of Jesus Christ has set the example for all the world to follow.
  107. And I plead with you to do all you can to
  108. end personal conflicts that are currently raging in your hearts.
  109. And he gave us three ways that we can establish
  110. or several ways in his uh talk of power of spiritual momentum.
  111. But I also saw there are three ways we can be
  112. um peacemakers in our world.
  113. And the first one is to establish peace in
  114. our communities just loving all around us no matter
  115. um their circumstance uh and who they are to
  116. say Jesus Christ was a lover of all people.
  117. And then
  118. we need to find and make peace for ourselves through atonement of Jesus Christ.
  119. When we repent and when we keep the commandments and we work righteousness,
  120. we are going to have the flow of the atonement of
  121. Jesus Christ in our lives and that will give us peace
  122. and then we can publish peace throughout the world as
  123. we teach and talk about Christ and all we do.
  124. I want to go back to what peacemaking means here.
  125. And I would like you to look at some of the qualities here that maybe
  126. you may feel that you would like more of in your life. Or maybe there's an area that,
  127. you know, uh you struggle with and
  128. just can imagine if we pick one of these areas, uh that
  129. what the difference would mean if we were to focus intently each day on working on,
  130. um,
  131. the qualities that are make up the anatomy of the peacemaker.
  132. Um Maybe I need to practice more patience and
  133. reminding myself that I don't need to get angry,
  134. upset things just to
  135. um
  136. have grace for other people
  137. and to allow them to speak their mind and to,
  138. um
  139. you know, know, know and have faith in
  140. Jesus Christ that um when we practice patience,
  141. that the outcome will always be better when we utilize patience.
  142. So maybe that's an area
  143. and I wanna encourage you to choose some of these areas here this week in
  144. practicing peacemaking.
  145. Lastly,
  146. I want to talk to you about the promises that were made
  147. by our prophet recently and just on these principles of peace,
  148. um we have here
  149. that,
  150. that as you act on these pursuits,
  151. I promise you the ability to move forward on the
  152. covenant path with increased momentum despite whatever obstacles you face,
  153. and I promise you greater strength to resist temptation, more peace of mind,
  154. freedom from fear and greater unity in your families.
  155. So
  156. we can see that um
  157. when we practice
  158. these principles of peace, that we can,
  159. maybe there's something lacking in our lives, you know,
  160. maybe is it something that we want more and more strength
  161. or maybe we want more peace of mind or more freedom
  162. or we want more unity in our homes.
  163. This is a promise that President Russell M Nelson has um spoken to us
  164. in his last conference and I believe him and I know that we can be
  165. uh a ripple that can extend
  166. beyond just our families by these simple principles and how
  167. much it's needed in our world right now that President
  168. Nelson has told us in our,
  169. in our conferences.
  170. And I do have a testimony of
  171. uh the scriptures of Jesus Christ of the atonement.
  172. I testify of the gospel of Jesus Christ and of Jesus Christ.
  173. That he is our savior and has the ultimate power and authority
  174. to help heal our hearts and our homes and for our nation.
  175. And they say these things named Jesus Christ, Amen.
  176. Here are my resources if you'd like to look up any of these talks. Thank you.
