00:00 - 00:03
Hi this is Danielle Pontecorvo and I'm gonna go ahead and
00:03 - 00:07
get started on my digital portion of the ethical dilemma project.
00:08 - 00:13
Um so the ethical issue that I chose was that a special education teacher
00:14 - 00:18
is approached by a parent and the parent is asking the special
00:18 - 00:23
education teacher to move her child to her class because they feel that
00:24 - 00:26
her child will be better, successful and
00:27 - 00:28
heard in class
00:28 - 00:31
um instead of the teacher that he that the student has now.
00:32 - 00:34
Um So
00:35 - 00:38
the how it relates to the texas code of
00:38 - 00:41
Ethics and the Council for Exceptional Children's Code of Ethics
00:42 - 00:46
Um for the Texas code of ethics, it relates to standards 1.4,
00:46 - 00:47
and 1.8,
00:48 - 00:50
I feel like this ethical issues resembles different
00:50 - 00:52
aspects of each of those three strands,
00:53 - 00:56
three strands being approached by a parent and the parent insisting that
00:56 - 01:00
their child be moved to their class with no data as evidence
01:00 - 01:05
to support their change is similar to asking for a favor while it's flattering that
01:05 - 01:07
the parent thinks highly of this teacher and
01:07 - 01:09
believes that her child could be successful,
01:10 - 01:13
but at what cost. Um
01:13 - 01:18
as for the Council for Exceptional Children's Code of Ethics.
01:18 - 01:21
This issue relates to multiple standards as well.
01:21 - 01:26
I feel like it relates more to the C. E. C. Um more than the texas code of Ethics.
01:26 - 01:27
Um
01:27 - 01:31
It fosters relationships with families based on respect and actively
01:31 - 01:36
involving families in the decision making process with their child um
01:37 - 01:38
and
01:38 - 01:42
like they're able to help them address the issue um advocating
01:42 - 01:44
for professional conditions and resources that
01:44 - 01:46
will improve learning outcomes of individuals
01:47 - 01:50
um with exceptionality ease is brought to attention in this issue.
01:50 - 01:54
Um advocating for the student that wants to be moved and they're
01:54 - 01:58
learning outcomes and then advocating for the students in that class.
01:58 - 02:01
They're learning outcomes as well with a new addition.
02:02 - 02:03
Um
02:04 - 02:10
the next piece is who and what is in control and what is not in my control.
02:11 - 02:14
Um I'm in control of advocating for my students
02:14 - 02:17
and how I can best maximize their learning outcomes.
02:17 - 02:22
I know what is best for them based on the data, based on the data I receive and collect.
02:23 - 02:26
Um I'm not in control of the parents and their wishes and we
02:26 - 02:31
can and will collaborate together with their child as the sole focus.
02:33 - 02:35
The next piece
02:36 - 02:37
is
02:39 - 02:42
um who can I go to? Um
02:43 - 02:47
in general, when I do have an ethical issue, I can go to my administration,
02:47 - 02:52
my special Education director or coordinator or my immediate supervisor
02:52 - 02:55
to help me address this issue and how to proceed.
02:56 - 02:56
Mhm.
02:58 - 02:59
Um
02:59 - 03:06
so possible actions, uh possible actions and positive consequences.
03:07 - 03:08
Um
03:09 - 03:11
the all students in the class continue to show
03:11 - 03:14
growth at their understood capability and that the student
03:14 - 03:17
that the student that is transition adjusts well to
03:17 - 03:20
their new placement and reaches their full educational potential,
03:21 - 03:23
possible negative consequences.
03:23 - 03:27
Another edition would be teacher burnout stress and too full of a plate.
03:28 - 03:30
The student that has moved to a new class doesn't adjust
03:30 - 03:33
well and does not show the growth that they were expected to
03:33 - 03:36
and then other students in the class who have been in there the whole time
03:36 - 03:40
start to decline or plateau in their own growth because of the new edition.
03:41 - 03:46
Um My plan, I would, my course of action consists of having a trial base.
03:46 - 03:49
I would add the student for three weeks or six weeks depending on
03:49 - 03:52
the grading period to see how they adjust to the new routine.
03:53 - 03:55
If the student does show substantial growth,
03:55 - 03:59
substantial growth with switching teachers and I would make the permanent change.
03:59 - 04:03
If the other students in that class start maintaining their growth, I would keep
04:03 - 04:04
uh them in that class as well.
04:06 - 04:08
Taking action.
04:08 - 04:13
Um The decision I would plan to take conforms to the texas texas code of
04:13 - 04:16
ethics by me evaluating the request based on
04:16 - 04:18
data and evidence to support apparent request.
04:18 - 04:22
It would be a joint decision between teacher parent and administration.
04:22 - 04:25
I am not the sole answer and decision maker.
04:25 - 04:29
It's important to note that a change of placement can not just happen instantly.
04:29 - 04:34
It is a joint decision and public agencies must ensure that it is joint
04:34 - 04:35
um
04:35 - 04:38
It is a joint decision based on federal laws and regulations.
04:40 - 04:41
Um any next steps.
04:41 - 04:47
If there were to be an issue um with the placement then there would be another meeting
04:47 - 04:52
um to further discuss further options. Um as a placement
04:53 - 04:54
for the child
