  1. Hello everyone.
  2. It's Vivian here.
  3. Um I'm getting ready to do my presentation for teaching,
  4. practical sample thing on verbs, whether they are present, simple
  5. or present, continuous, so I'm just going to jump right
  6. in most of the information should appear on the screen
  7. here. Um And let's see how it goes.
  8. So um let's begin class.
  9. Welcome. Welcome to everyone here.
  10. Um I'm going to briefly take attendance because it's a
  11. very small class today.
  12. Um First student we have is a stuffed plague doctor
  13. um very helpful and our second student is an orange
  14. wooden horse.
  15. You might also hear some birds in the background.
  16. Um Those are my roommates cocktails and they're in the
  17. classroom down the hall and they're just very rowdy.
  18. So now that I've done attendance, I'm going to make
  19. a bit of small talk with my students and asked
  20. them to hand in homework, which was probably a short
  21. paragraph writing assignment from last week.
  22. And if we have a bunch of time before class
  23. starts, I usually like to have a word search ready.
  24. Um often since I'm teaching adult students, I show up
  25. a few minutes like 15 minutes early, they show up
  26. a bit early.
  27. If the classroom is empty, it's a great time to
  28. go through some questions, one on one stuff and for
  29. other students, if they don't have anything, it's nice to
  30. have, you know, something handy.
  31. So I like doing a word search based on whatever
  32. the theme of the week is.
  33. So that's going on.
  34. There's some chatter, I would also then start with asking
  35. students about what did they do on the weekend, what
  36. are they looking forward to?
  37. You know, just getting some timeline ideas in there and
  38. then once the class is ready to start off we
  39. go. So I would ask and I am asking my
  40. students such as they are, what are you doing, What
  41. are you doing right now?
  42. And in the classroom, I would be writing on the
  43. white board behind me.
  44. But given the lack of white board we do what
  45. we can.
  46. So Horse says, I am learning, you know, we all
  47. hope horses learning, he's doing his best.
  48. Um, and the plague doctor says, you know, I am
  49. sitting in class, I am uh excited about going to
  50. a zoo next week.
  51. Um you know, when I ask questions like this in
  52. the past you get all kinds of answers from, I
  53. am, I'm hungry, I didn't eat dinner so you get
  54. things all over the place.
  55. Um I'd write most of them on the board, but
  56. I would focus on ones that you know, I would
  57. definitely be sure to write ones on the board that
  58. focus more on the present, simple and present, continuous rather
  59. than something a bit more difficult to tackle.
  60. You know, keeping it kind of within scope.
  61. So these are the ones I have looked at for
  62. today. So I am in class, I am learning, I
  63. am speaking english, I'm sitting on a chair, I'm excited
  64. to go to the zoo tomorrow.
  65. And I would then ask students, you know what, looking
  66. at these, what do you notice, what is the same
  67. about these sentences and what is different?
  68. And we could talk a bit about um differences.
  69. But mostly I would guide the discussion to the difference
  70. between I am in class and I am learning and
  71. just even looking at how the breakdown of um the
  72. verbs are written.
  73. So I would say well you know we can divide
  74. present tense verbs into simple and continuous and that then
  75. I would go into some examples here.
  76. So present simple are things that we do regularly.
  77. So usually I read a book at lunch.
  78. Uh could someone else tell me about a habit they
  79. have? I drink coffee every morning, so do I?
  80. And you know, maybe get another couple examples.
  81. I stay up far too late every night and I'd
  82. be like, well that's a long sentence.
  83. Tell me about the verb.
  84. So the verb there is stay up and we could,
  85. you know, have a brief discussion about that.
  86. So then another example of things that are present simple
  87. are things that are always true, water boils at 100
  88. degrees great.
  89. Who hasn't?
  90. Another example of things that are always true?
  91. Uh, something that is always true is I never returned
  92. my library books on time.
  93. Great. Um usually when I've asked questions like this before,
  94. someone will say, politicians always lie.
  95. You're like, well that's a little bit of an awkward
  96. thing, but we'll go on.
  97. You can use it with state of verbs and permanent
  98. ish situations.
  99. It doesn't have to be forever, but it should be
  100. a significant length of time.
  101. So we are in class.
  102. Mahal lives in Toronto squirrels, eat all my tomatoes.
  103. So those are our examples.
  104. Next we can move on to the present, continuous and
  105. it's things that we use with right now or today.
  106. Right now.
  107. I am swimming right now.
  108. The water is boiling.
  109. So you can put in the past to can someone
  110. give me another example right now.
  111. I am finishing my Starbucks latte and it's tragic.
  112. I could do with one uh two.
  113. Today I am riding the bus home.
  114. Great action verbs, you are riding a bicycle.
  115. We can talk if you want about the image and
  116. other action verbs that are going on.
  117. like the woman in the red shirt is smiling.
  118. The woman in the blue shirt is also riding a
  119. bicycle and you can use it for things that are
  120. happening in the moment or in the future.
  121. They are meeting with her boss tomorrow.
  122. I am not going to the zoo.
  123. And so we can see there's two kind of groups
  124. here And I'm just going to pop back to the
  125. previous slide for a second here.
  126. See how it says, water boils at 100° and that's
  127. present, simple, present continuous.
  128. The water is boiling okay, so often so present continuous.
  129. Often not necessarily always.
  130. There's some exceptions because there's always exceptions Is a two
  131. parter. So let's just do a quick little sort of
  132. test run exercise here.
  133. And is it simple?
  134. Is it continuous?
  135. So sentence one, It rarely rains in the desert.
  136. Mm I think it's present.
  137. Simple, good job horse.
  138. Why is it present?
  139. Simple because rains is the verb and it's talking about
  140. a general truth.
  141. It is like saying water boils at 100 degrees awesome
  142. horse. I am proud of you.
  143. She is always singing in the shower that is present
  144. continuous. It is a habit and it goes with always
  145. and often it only addresses annoying habits.
  146. You can see there's the two parts in the verb
  147. is and singing good job plague doctor.
  148. He works at a hotel.
  149. Okay, that is a permanent state.
  150. It is maybe not forever but it happens for a
  151. long time and there's only one part to the verb.
  152. Good job.
  153. She's working at the hotel until eight PM.
  154. That is a temporary state.
  155. It's a continuous verb.
  156. You can see the is and the working so it's
  157. not forever.
  158. So yeah, it's continuous.
  159. Yeah. Last one.
  160. My flight is at seven a.m.
  161. That is a present.
  162. Simple. You can see that the verb is there's just
  163. the one verb is and it also is a timetable
  164. event which is another way to look at simple or
  165. continuous. And so we know it's simple because it's a
  166. timetable. Good job horse.
  167. So now that you guys have some idea of what's
  168. going on and if you have any questions you know
  169. I'll be wandering around.
  170. I'd like you to take out your workbook Turn to
  171. page seven.
  172. Turn to page 15 to Exercise 7.1.
  173. And you're gonna work on that you know by yourself
  174. in pairs And we'll give it about let's say 5:10
  175. minutes. Um if you finish and you wanna keep going
  176. you can go on to 7.2.
  177. Um And you can see the two different kind of
  178. activities that we have there.
  179. The first one is um All right, let me pull
  180. open my workbook here.
  181. Okay, so seven who wants to read aloud what the
  182. instructions are?
  183. Thank you.
  184. Horse, present, simple or present continuous is the verb form
  185. and the sentences correct or incorrect correct the wrong sentences.
  186. Great. We'll take this up in about, like I said
  187. 10 minutes max.
  188. You should be fine.
  189. All right.
  190. And that's the end of my sample like chat.
  191. Um Take care, have a good one.
  192. And if you have any questions you know where to
  193. reach me.
  194. Bye bye.
