00:01 - 00:01
my name is Gloria Mazula.
00:02 - 00:06
I am a finalist in the Higher Education Master's program
00:07 - 00:08
at Sam Houston State University.
00:10 - 00:13
uh we were given a task of designing our five
00:14 - 00:17
and 10 year outlook from here on.
00:19 - 00:22
And when a task like that is given to me,
00:22 - 00:25
I always tend to look at my past and my
00:25 - 00:29
present because I believe that this life is a journey
00:30 - 00:34
and in that journey, anything I do or have done
00:34 - 00:36
will impact the way I look at my future.
00:41 - 00:43
Therefore I decided to start from my origins.
00:45 - 00:51
I was born from proud parents farmers in a rule
00:52 - 00:56
uh area in a small porches calling it called muslim
00:56 - 01:00
Beak in Southern Africa from the beginning, early on our
01:00 - 01:07
parents, these farmers um they taught us and influenced us
01:08 - 01:12
that education is the path to succeed and move on
01:12 - 01:15
up. They were farmers but they believe that if we
01:15 - 01:19
decide to stand farming we should do more than what
01:20 - 01:23
they were doing at the time, they encouraged us to
01:23 - 01:28
to study, they encouraged us to succeed and I did
01:28 - 01:35
that. Uh huh My first school, my grade school was
01:35 - 01:40
in a small rule a school and I always like
01:40 - 01:43
to bring this up because it was a classroom made
01:44 - 01:46
in a house of the teacher.
01:46 - 01:49
And in that house we had from first to the
01:50 - 01:52
first grade, she made the best to teach all of
01:52 - 01:58
us. She was very much maternal, very educative and she
01:59 - 02:02
exposed us to everything from poetry to reading.
02:03 - 02:05
Uh And I did some poetry, I remember when I
02:06 - 02:08
was in 1st 2nd grade, I did my high school
02:09 - 02:13
in muslim muslim Beak did my undergrad and applied mathematics
02:13 - 02:18
in Arizona and went back to Mozambique worked and I
02:18 - 02:22
did a post grad in public administration and then I
02:22 - 02:25
decided to come back to Sam Houston to do my
02:25 - 02:31
higher education because from many years back uh I wanted
02:31 - 02:38
to do a master's degree in higher education, I started
02:39 - 02:41
to work at 17 years old.
02:41 - 02:45
Before that I volunteered as uh in our favorite ization
02:46 - 02:51
wasn't because a higher rate of illiteracy and um after
02:52 - 02:56
that I worked as an assistant for math for the
02:56 - 03:05
math teachers in a school and um got married, left
03:06 - 03:08
the country, worked as a nurse here in United States
03:08 - 03:13
in phoenix Arizona, and after I went back and did
03:13 - 03:17
my undergrad in mathematics, I went back to muslim Beak
03:18 - 03:23
and worked in register where I I was the leader
03:23 - 03:24
in that area.
03:25 - 03:29
I had, I helped to set up the services and
03:29 - 03:33
I'm back in the United States now working as an
03:33 - 03:35
academic advisor at Lone Star College.
03:37 - 03:39
Mhm One thing I would like to say is that
03:40 - 03:42
all the tasks, all the work that I've done throughout
03:43 - 03:48
my years, I have learned to to feel happy and
03:48 - 03:50
I found purpose to what I was doing.
03:50 - 03:55
So I have felt fulfilled throughout my work career and
03:56 - 03:58
as an academic advisor today, I feel that my path,
03:59 - 04:03
my my my basically what I would say my destiny
04:03 - 04:07
and my career is in there and I enjoy every
04:07 - 04:08
minute of it.
04:12 - 04:13
I have very skills.
04:13 - 04:21
Um I have leadership skills in higher education um especially
04:22 - 04:23
in the area of student affairs.
04:24 - 04:27
I feel that I'm assistant academic advisor in higher education.
04:28 - 04:32
I started early on to work as an advisor and
04:33 - 04:35
I worked in high education and muslim big for many
04:35 - 04:38
years and then here and I feel I feel very
04:39 - 04:40
confident in that area.
04:41 - 04:45
I have high ability to work with diverse, diverse groups
04:46 - 04:49
and I have read a lot about that and I
04:49 - 04:54
believe that when we do our work special advising uh
04:54 - 04:59
huh different groups react to different ways to the way
04:59 - 05:03
we approach our advising methods and how we work with
05:04 - 05:04
our students.
05:05 - 05:10
I am able to create instead of programs to improve
05:10 - 05:10
student success.
05:12 - 05:17
I worked with students with probation and suspension holds and
05:18 - 05:21
I'm proud to say that during that time we set
05:22 - 05:25
up a system that helped a lot of students to
05:25 - 05:27
come out of the holes and continue on.
05:28 - 05:35
I am very patient and methodic with my students in
05:35 - 05:36
the next five years.
05:36 - 05:38
Like I said, because I've had that experience.
05:40 - 05:42
What I'm planning to do is to continue to introduce
05:42 - 05:43
improvements in my job.
05:44 - 05:45
I'm a Tree advisor at this moment.
05:46 - 05:47
I've been doing this for a year.
05:48 - 05:51
I want to be more active as an academy member.
05:52 - 05:57
I'm planning to move into a leadership position before I
05:57 - 06:02
retire, create an advising podcast in Portuguese in english and
06:02 - 06:03
start my memoir.
06:04 - 06:07
I find it very important for me to live a
06:08 - 06:09
written memoir of my life.
06:10 - 06:12
I have a trajectory that I should do it for
06:13 - 06:15
my Children and for other people that might be interested.
06:18 - 06:18
My 10 Year forecast.
06:20 - 06:21
I'll finish my, my my memoirs.
06:23 - 06:25
I work full time for four more years within the
06:25 - 06:29
10 year period and then I'm planning to retire and
06:29 - 06:33
enjoy the fruits of my hard work and travel.
06:34 - 06:37
One thing that I enjoy doing in my life is
06:38 - 06:39
make stops and travel.
06:39 - 06:41
I've traveled to different parts of the world.
06:42 - 06:47
I've gone to conferences in brazil, uh huh and uh
06:48 - 06:52
and Mauritius and Portugal and I want to continue to
06:52 - 06:56
do those troubles not only as work but also as
06:56 - 07:01
