  13. Louise, played by Susan Sarandon.
  14. Also nominated for the Academy Award for her portrayal
  15. is a diner waitress and a dead end job
  16. and in a relationship that is going nowhere fast,
  17. thermal wonders if there's anything more.
  18. A nineties heroin.
  19. According to Hutchinson,
  20. Thelma and Louise became a representation of moving out of the
  21. feminist backlash of the eighties and into third wave feminism.
  22. Post feminism,
  23. Thelma becomes a heroine in her own right, for many reasons. Internal and external.
  24. The women hit the road and what ensues is an adventure the world never forgot.
  25. And onto the third wave feminism, the cultural,
  26. the culture of the early nineties was
  27. ripe with women who wanted better representation,
  28. both on film and in the media.
  29. In general, Anita Hill,
  30. A one time assistant to Clarence thomas testified before the Senate
  31. judiciary committee in his confirmation hearing for the Supreme Court.
  32. She came forward with allegations of sexual harassment
  33. as she was questioned by all white all male committee,
  34. she never wavered from her story.
  35. And even though thomas was ultimately confirmed,
  36. she inspired countless women to run for office the next year,
  37. opened the public's eyes to sexual harassment and
  38. is credited for starting third wave feminism.
  39. The Violence against Women Act of 1994
  40. signed into law by President Clinton and written by then Senator Joseph
  41. R biden is defined by the national Network to end domestic violence as
  42. the original Violence Against Women Act was the first federal legislation
  43. acknowledging domestic violence and sexual assault
  44. as crimes and provided federal resources
  45. to encourage community coordinated responses
  46. to combating violence against women
  47. up for renewal.
  48. Every five years,
  49. each v A W A reauthorization has built on existing
  50. protections and programs to better meet the needs of survivors.
  51. Thelma's story could be seen as one of the pop culture influences for the act.
  52. She was after all, the victim of domestic violence as well,
  53. was Louise and attempted sexual assault.
  54. As we will see,
  55. The film was so significant that in 2016 it was entered into
  56. the Library of Congress for preservation by the national film registry.
  57. The film was deemed culturally significant,
  58. a high honor for a film and the message it sends.
  59. This brings us to Thelma's journey.
  60. It's a heroic tale in joseph Campbell's mono myth style.
  61. Thelma and Louise are two ordinary women from Arkansas who
  62. decide to go away together on a weekend fishing trip.
  63. Louise is excited for a taste of freedom, but
  64. this is their call to adventure.
  65. Thelma is not quite sure she's ready to leave her
  66. ordinary world even for the weekend since her husband,
  67. Darrell is controlling abusive.
  68. Louise is ready to answer the call,
  69. but Thelma refuses at first because she's scared and not confident at all.
  70. Supreme ordeal.
  71. Louise as her mentor,
  72. convinces her that she deserves this trip and that she needs her to come
  73. and round. Thelma convinces Louise to stop at a roadside bar for a few drinks,
  74. does not want to let loose, which seems to be her motivation for wanting to stop
  75. enter Harlan.
  76. He's a good looking man who's taking a liking to Thelma and shows her attention.
  77. She's not used to getting
  78. flattered, She decides to dance with him and let him buy her drinks.
  79. As Louise heads to the bathroom,
  80. Harlan sees his opportunity to tell Thelma let's go out and get some air.
  81. Selma laughs and cools down.
  82. Harlan grabs her, throws her over the car hood and attempts to rape her.
  83. Louise appears suddenly
  84. Yeah.
  85. Uh
  86. And Louise appears and puts a gun to Harlan's head. She does not shoot him.
  87. She does not shoot him for the attack however,
  88. but when he does not show remorse and makes a derogatory comment,
  89. Louise shoots him in the chest.
  90. The incident that criminalizes Louise is arguably not
  91. the attack in the car park but a
  92. nameless something that happened to her a few years before the film begins in texas.
  93. Uh Some of the tests from and Louise become fugitives of the law for killing Harlan.
  94. Louise tells Selma that they need to go to Mexico but they cannot pass through texas.
  95. Writer. Cory does not say outright what happened to Louise and texas.
  96. However, we can conclude
  97. that she had been sexually assaulted and took
  98. matters into her own hands there as well.
  99. Thelma accepting the test, agrees to the plan.
  100. Test passed
  101. the upcoming tests,
  102. Thumma confronts include a sexy hitchhiker cowboy and how she
  103. will deal with her husband Darrell on the phone.
  104. The women's only ally at this point in the journey is Jimmy. Louise's boyfriend whom
  105. whom she calls to tell him to wire her life savings.
  106. Enemies include Darryl Hell the cop who's trying
  107. to capture them in Harlem the dead rapist
  108. moving right along.
  109. Thelma's tested as they stopped and Louise calls jimmy to find out where he
  110. wired the money and she tells Thelma to call Daryl and do damage control.
  111. Louise tells her to tell him she'll be home sunday so he'll stop raising suspicions.
  112. Thelma summons the summons up some courage,
  113. calls Darrell and he proceeds to yell at her and demand she return
  114. fed up. Thelma tells him go fund yourself and hangs up.
  115. She's never taken a stand with him in her life.
  116. Test passed
  117. Thelma heads back to where Louise is and comes upon J. D.
  118. A sexy hitchhiking cowboy who's looking for a ride.
  119. Is he an ally or an enemy?
  120. Louise takes a look at him in remarks,
  121. I don't think that's a good idea.
  122. They hit the road again. And Thelma inquires when they will be in Mexico.
  123. Cut to hal the cop breaking into Louise's apartment and meeting up with Darryl.
  124. Cut back to Louise, telling Thelma to find some some back roads
  125. to get between Oklahoma city and Mexico.
  126. Thelma asked why don't they just go through texas?
  127. Because it's the only and best way Louis says we don't want to get caught in texas.
  128. Trust me, I don't want to talk about this anymore.
  129. What's that about? Moving along
  130. the women CJd again, hitchhiking
  131. Thelma convinces Louise to give him a ride but she has her own reasons for this.
  132. Jump to the next step. A motel,
  133. to their surprise jimmy is there. He didn't just wire the money.
  134. Louise tells Thelma to keep the money safe in her room
  135. and she goes with jimmy to talk in his room.
  136. Now we're in Thelma's room and guess who comes a knocking
  137. JD? Of course he is the temptation for Thelma.
  138. They flirt, he seduces her and she has the best sex of her life,
  139. but you know what can they say if it seems, you know, but you know what they say,
  140. excuse me If it seems too good to be true, it probably is
  141. the next morning at breakfast. Louise says goodbye to jimmy. She knows forever.
  142. And Thelma shows up sporting her afterglow.
  143. Thelma has come into her own. She exudes self worth and confidence.
  144. She's never known
  145. as our heroine continues on our journey.
  146. She and Louise realized Thelma left JD in the room with all their money
  147. Now the night before she told Thelma now, the night before,
  148. he told Thelma about how he's on parole for robbing gas stations, et cetera.
  149. This is foreshadowing.
  150. They rush, he's gone and so is all their money.
  151. We see Louise start to break down as the roles between the women start to reverse,
  152. Thelma says, let's get out of here,
  153. broke and running from the law.
  154. Thelma decides to test her newfound courage and robs a mini mart,
  155. which is caught on video.
  156. We now see how his boss and Darryl watching the video of the robbery.
  157. The boss wants to help find them quick,
  158. but the boss wants hail to find them.
  159. Quick hail turns into an ally internally and tries
  160. to think of a way to help Thelma and Louise
  161. Back on the road. We see the nasty trucker passed by flicking his tongue, etc.
  162. They ignore him
  163. driving 110 mph, admiring the scenery. They see the red and blue lights behind them.
  164. Before the trooper can do anything.
  165. Thelma points a gun at his head and forces him into the trunk of his own car
  166. in desperation. We next see Louise call hell.
  167. He says they need to turn themselves in or be charged with murder.
  168. He tells Louise, I know what's making you run, I know what happened to you in texas.
  169. Louise realizes that hell might be an ally,
  170. he knows about her own rape. She's stunned.
  171. Just them.
  172. Thelma aggressively cuts the phone line knowing has been traced and asked Louise.
  173. You aren't giving up on me now, are you? Because something's crossed over in me.
  174. I can't go back.
  175. The women hit the road again with an air of confidence in their decision.
  176. Thelma tells Louise, I feel awake, wide awake.
  177. I don't remember ever feeling this awake,
  178. cutting into Thelma's moment is who else this ship had trucker.
  179. Thelma decides she's had enough of men
  180. looking at Louise who knowingly nas. She begins to mess with the scum,
  181. tease him out of the truck, then blow it to smithereens.
  182. Our heroine has her reward.
  183. Finally, she has found her inner strength, her power and she's not giving it up.
  184. The women speed away. They're empowered and confident.
  185. Then the law appears behind them and helicopters are heard and seen overhead.
  186. They keep going and all of a sudden there looking out over the Grand Canyon,
  187. lui spins the car around but the cops are still closing in.
  188. She spins the car around again and stops,
  189. looks ahead as Louise, Louise loads her gun.
  190. The cops instructing them to put their hands in the air and step out of the car.
  191. Thelma asks what she's doing.
  192. Louise says she's going to fight Thelma says, let's keep going
  193. and looks out over the vastness of the grand union.
  194. Louise looks at her, kisses her and hits the gas.
  195. We see how running towards the car as it speeds straight ahead.
  196. He doesn't want the cops to shoot.
  197. Louise, raises her hand.
  198. Elmo grabs it tight with smiles on their faces. They drive off the cliff.
  199. Alma's journey is over
  200. and she dies a heroin,
  201. not only to herself, but to Louise as well.
  202. Thelma's hero's journey is not the usual one.
  203. She and Louise represents so much more than just women
  204. who break the law and take the easy way out.
  205. Thelma and Louise decision to drive on is a denunciation
  206. of the law enforcement establishment that offered them no protection.
  207. The focus of this film echoes what women experience even more so today, rape,
  208. sexual harassment, sexism inequality.
  209. The writer director and stars hoped this film would
  210. help resolve the challenges that women face every day.
  211. But
  212. this was not to be
  213. this example of the use of film and pop culture is a powerful one,
  214. although the creators didn't realize that it made a footprint immediately
  215. following its release.
  216. Excuse me,
  217. Excuse me immediately following his release 30 years later,
  218. they recognize its importance.
  219. Thelma and Louise is a timeless story of
  220. two friends who expecting only a weekend getaway,
  221. ended up getting back their power and not being
  222. afraid to live the life they want and deserve.
  223. However short it may have been
  224. as a woman.
  225. I find inspiration in their journey and that makes
  226. them the heroines that they were created to be.
  227. Here's my references and thank you so much for listening. I hope you have a great day.
