  1. Hello.
  2. My lesson plan is focused on grade two and my goal is to observe and
  3. record the location of the sun over a period of one day using a sundial.
  4. So the standards that I'm going to focus on for this lesson,
  5. I have them up here on the screen uh observe and record so the
  6. location of the sun and the moon in the sky over a day.
  7. This lesson is going to focus solely on the sun.
  8. This standard also addresses changes in the appearance of the moon over a month.
  9. Um we're not going to be focusing on that in this lesson,
  10. we're going to be strictly focusing on the sun.
  11. Um The other standard that I chose was
  12. participate in simple investigations of the objects found
  13. in the day or night sky to answer a question or to test a prediction.
  14. So um in this lesson we are going to be making a sundial.
  15. Um so that is going to be our simple investigation and um
  16. we're going to be using the sun to test our prediction.
  17. So um just a few things in order to make this lesson successful.
  18. Um Obviously in order to make a sundial,
  19. this lesson will have to be conducted on a sunny day.
  20. Um so that's going to take a little bit of um
  21. planning on the teacher's part.
  22. Um Also it's a lesson that is kind of going to be
  23. conducted throughout the day since in order to complete the sundial,
  24. the students will need to um
  25. go outside a few times throughout the day, particularly
  26. like
  27. at the beginning of each hour.
  28. So um this is a lesson that will need to be planned out a bit in advance.
  29. So um
  30. also I'd like to add to um about the planning.
  31. So if you usually do like your science lesson like midday or at the end of the day,
  32. um this is going to need to start at the beginning
  33. of the day since it's like an ongoing all day um
  34. and all day activity to successfully create the sundial.
  35. So if you're doing this,
  36. you'll have to move your science up until the beginning
  37. of the day in order for this to be successful.
  38. So at the beginning of the day,
  39. um I'm going to have the students in a whole group setting and I will post
  40. some questions will kind of discuss if the students had ever taken notice of this,
  41. the sun's position throughout the day.
  42. I could ask questions um
  43. about how the sun looks like on the
  44. way to school compared to when they're leaving school
  45. or maybe how the sun looks after dinner when it's going down and we'll begin that um
  46. conversation to kind of gauge students understanding and to kind as kind of
  47. like a segue into what we're doing that day with the sundial.
  48. So many students might not have ever heard of a sundial,
  49. they might not know what a sundial is.
  50. So we'll kind of discuss what a sundial is and I will um
  51. notify the students that will be making a sundial
  52. and I will show a picture of a sundial.
  53. So maybe something like this.
  54. Um,
  55. to show what a sundial is and how we are going to
  56. use the sun and some simple objects to make this sundial.
  57. So in order to make the sundial as you can see, we just need a few simple materials.
  58. We will need a paper plate.
  59. Um In this picture there's a pencil.
  60. I was thinking about maybe using a straw, but a sharpened pencil work as well.
  61. Um I thought it would be easy to take the pencil
  62. or not, rather, sorry, not the pencil,
  63. take the paper plate and punch a hole in the middle
  64. so that the students don't have to
  65. punch their own hole.
  66. Um, So I thought that would be best in terms of like safety and time saving.
  67. Um, so each student would be given a paper plate and a straw.
  68. Uh, sorry, let me backtrack a paper plate with the hole punch in it.
  69. Um, a straw and maybe too small rocks like you see here in the picture,
  70. since the sundial is going to be outside.
  71. I thought the rocks would be beneficial to hold the paper plate down in case it's
  72. like Wendy or something like that because we do want our son Dallas to stay put,
  73. stay in the same place throughout the day.
  74. So at the beginning of the day, after a group discussion,
  75. the students will be given their materials and um at that point,
  76. um will line up and go outside and the
  77. teacher will demonstrate how to get the sundial started.
  78. So um say it's 10 o'clock when we go outside. Um
  79. we will put our paper plate down with our straw inserted in the paper plate.
  80. And depending where the shadow is, we will um draw a line and mark that as 10 o'clock.
  81. Now, we want the students to make sure that we're all,
  82. we all have our paper plates facing the right direction because at
  83. the end of the day we're going to want to compare them.
  84. So we're going to put our paper plate down,
  85. mark the line at the top of the hour and market.
  86. Um let's say it's 10 o'clock, we'll market for 10 o'clock.
  87. So then um I will have a timer and it will
  88. sound at the little bit before the beginning of each hour.
  89. And um the students will be advised of this timer sounding throughout the day.
  90. And um at the top of each hour will go outside and we will observe where the
  91. shadow is pointing and we will draw another line and market um dependent on the hour.
  92. So um,
  93. You know, so that the next line is going to be a little bit past the 10,
  94. it'll and will mark it as 11 and so on and so forth will do that throughout the day.
  95. So um prior to the last hour of school,
  96. the students will um all they will all bring in their sundials
  97. and we'll have another kind of regroup and have another conversation.
  98. We'll compare sundial tells everyone should pretty much look the same.
  99. Um We'll compare, we'll discuss any patterns and then we'll also um kind of discuss,
  100. what do you think would happen if you took your sundial home and continued it,
  101. would you notice the same pattern?
  102. Um And then I um
  103. also would encourage students to actually take their son
  104. to go home and finish it up at home.
  105. Um And then they could bring it in and or discuss what the next day,
  106. um how it turned out.
  107. And I also think it would be a cool idea to send home like a pamphlet or brochure.
  108. I saw some ideas online how to make a more permanent sundial using rocks and a stick.
  109. So I thought that would be cool if the students enjoyed this activity.
  110. They could make something like that like in their backyard.
  111. Um That way they could do it with their family and kind of discuss what
  112. they learned at school and it will be something that they could keep and um
  113. and look at their own house.
  114. So um that's pretty much it for my lesson plan for second grade science. Um
  115. yep. So thanks
