At Girls Teaching Girls to Code, we love creating fun experiences to inspire high school girls to pursue futures in Computer Science and Engineering.
Through our annual Code Camp, hands-on workshops, and other special events, you'll get to learn coding foundations, build exciting projects, and form lasting bonds with relatable peers and college mentors in the field.

Audio TranscriptAuto-generated 00:00 - 00:01 Hi, everyone. 00:01 - 00:03 My name's Heidi and I'm here representing a whole bunch 00:04 - 00:08 of amazing woman behind girls teaching girls the code, and 00:08 - 00:11 we just wanted to wish you a happy International Women's 00:11 - 00:16 Day. So first I wanted to tell you a little 00:16 - 00:16 bit about myself. 00:17 - 00:20 I grew up in the Bay Area, where we are 00:20 - 00:23 obviously no strangers to tech, and I was also fortunate 00:23 - 00:26 enough to attend a high school that offered computer science 00:26 - 00:29 classes. But even with all of that set up for 00:29 - 00:31 me, I always steered clear of the subject. 00:33 - 00:36 Looking back now, I think it's obvious that I had 00:36 - 00:38 all these stereotypes in my head of who and engineer 00:39 - 00:42 is and what an engineer looks like, and I just 00:42 - 00:44 didn't identify with that picture at all. 00:45 - 00:48 But eventually I did make my way into the subject 00:48 - 00:52 and ended up studying computer science for both my undergraduate 00:52 - 00:54 and graduate degrees. 00:55 - 00:57 Um, along the way, I met so many other girls 00:58 - 01:00 who had shared a very similar story. 01:04 - 01:07 So Girl Season Girls, the code was built on this 01:07 - 01:11 concept that if we take high school girls and connect 01:12 - 01:15 them to really relatable college H mentors, who can teach 01:15 - 01:16 them some coding basics. 01:17 - 01:20 Uh, then maybe we can change that picture that some 01:20 - 01:22 of them having their heads of who and engineer is. 01:23 - 01:27 And maybe they'll feel inspired to pursue set stem subjects. 01:28 - 01:32 Over the last seven years, we have brought over 2000 01:33 - 01:35 girls into the world of computer science, and we're very 01:36 - 01:36 proud of that. 01:39 - 01:41 I want to tell you about one girl in particular. 01:41 - 01:42 Her name is Caroline. 01:43 - 01:45 She's at the bottom of this picture here. 01:46 - 01:48 Ah, we met a couple of years ago, and she 01:49 - 01:51 told me that she had attended code camp when she 01:51 - 01:54 was in high school, and she admitted that she wasn't 01:54 - 01:56 particularly interested in the subject at the time. 01:57 - 02:00 But something moved her that day because she ended up 02:00 - 02:05 graduating high school and attending Stanford, where she joined girls 02:05 - 02:07 teaching girls to code and ended up leading the organization 02:09 - 02:10 on teaching a whole bunch of other girls. 02:12 - 02:17 Uh, her story is really special to us because it 02:17 - 02:19 was the first time that we saw we were able 02:19 - 02:23 to inspire just one person to pursue something that they 02:23 - 02:24 wouldn't have otherwise thought to pursue. 02:26 - 02:29 And by the way, now she's personally her master's in 02:29 - 02:30 computer science at Stanford. 02:33 - 02:35 But it turns out that Carolina was not the only 02:36 - 02:38 one, uh, that we were. 02:38 - 02:41 We just started meeting more and more of these girls 02:42 - 02:43 that we called full circle girls. 02:44 - 02:45 So they attended co camp when they were in high 02:46 - 02:49 school, ended up going to college and pursuing computer science 02:50 - 02:53 and teaching more high school girls through girls teaching girls 02:54 - 02:54 to code. 02:55 - 02:59 Um, in fact, we got together a whole group of 02:59 - 03:02 these full circle girls to launch our UC Berkeley chapter 03:02 - 03:03 last year. 03:04 - 03:06 And in just a short time, they were able thio 03:07 - 03:11 pull off three different events and reach almost 100 girls, 03:13 - 03:14 which is pretty incredible. 03:16 - 03:19 So, uh, in light of International Women's Day, we wanted 03:19 - 03:21 to pose a challenge to all of you. 03:22 - 03:25 Um, we really believe that if we're able to teach 03:25 - 03:28 and inspire just a few girls to pursue computer science 03:29 - 03:33 and engineering, uh, they would then be able to go 03:33 - 03:35 and teach and inspire a few more girls who, with 03:35 - 03:39 Auntie gin, inspire a few more girls, and then we 03:39 - 03:40 would really have a movement. 03:42 - 03:46 So the challenge is to think of one or two 03:47 - 03:50 girls that you can reach out to today and inspire. 03:51 - 03:54 And then together we might be able to actually empower 03:55 - 03:55 an entire generation. 03:58 - 04:00 Thank you guys for listening to this message and again. 04:00 - 04:03 Happy International Women's Day from all of us at girls 04:04 - 04:05 teaching girls to code Bye.
