  1. the government and social media giants have massive control over
  2. the content its citizens actually concede.
  3. E thes higher powers monitor what is being said.
  4. They can control narratives and influence in ways that hurts
  5. its population.
  6. They can dictate elections, um, control the public's view on
  7. certain topics and ultimately decide what they think.
  8. One of the ways they're capable of doing this controlling
  9. is through comments on social media posts.
  10. New research, actually from the University of Georgia, has found
  11. that comments are extremely powerful.
  12. They can significantly swayed people's opinions on topics and influence
  13. sources perceived credibility.
  14. This study actually included testing individuals between the ages of
  15. 18 to 60.
  16. Um, and they were exposed to mock interviews on YouTube.
  17. The control group didn't have any comments under the video.
  18. While the second group actually displayed comments accusing the politician
  19. of being deceptive, they found that under the video, with
  20. negative comments about the politicians, the groups were significantly more
  21. likely to echo those negative comments.
  22. This study shows that by simply manipulating what Commons people
  23. see, they can drastically influence public opinions.
  24. Another way these companies can decide what you think is
  25. actually with unbiased fact checkers.
  26. Giving these third party organizations permission to flag content creates
  27. a dangerous precedent.
  28. They have the ability to discredit sources based on the
  29. limited facts they have access to.
  30. And it has actually been observed that they frequently aren't
  31. truly as unbiased as we would like them to be.
  32. Some of them are actually run by activist groups, and
  33. they publish one sided pieces of their own.
  34. And those are the post that they're going to be
  35. researching against now, occasionally these flag posts, um, some have
  36. been disagreed with in the past.
  37. And instead of tasking these groups with the job of
  38. monitoring all the posts in a certain topic, we should
  39. empower our citizens, um, to sort the truth from the
  40. lies and by providing them the tools to do that.
  41. And then I believe that utilitarianism would support monitoring, um,
  42. to some degree, as long as it is done correctly,
  43. Um, we obviously we can't have, like biased, um, fact
  44. checkers and stuff.
  45. We have to make sure that everything is fair and
  46. balanced to make sure that everything is benefiting the general
  47. population. And then I also believe that Kant would oppose,
  48. um, simply because of the contradiction of monitoring everything would
  49. cause. It just wouldn't be something that you would believe
  50. to be sustainable.
  51. And then, um currently, the Chinese government actually fully restricts
  52. what it's citizens can consume online.
  53. It has actually been called the largest selective suppression of
  54. human communication in the recording history of any country.
  55. They actually do this by social media clones, moderated by
  56. them and then employing workers with the job of actually
  57. taking down negative depictions of their country.
  58. They have thrown countless journalists into prison for writing pieces,
  59. whether or not they were true on dhe, China also
  60. uses the comments by flooding post with fake pro China
  61. comments. To give the illusion that there is an overwhelming
  62. support from the citizens went that is in fact, not
  63. the case.
  64. They're actually able to significantly control when and what it's
  65. citizens think, and this allows their people in power to
  66. actually stay in power.
  67. North Korea takes this to the extreme.
  68. Instead of controlling what parts of the Internet they can
  69. see, North Koreans aren't granted access to the Internet at
  70. all. Uh, they're forced or regularly pledge allegiance to their
  71. supreme leader and any acts of disobedience.
  72. They could be taken and placed into prison camps for
  73. the rest of their lives.
  74. Their families of these offenders will also be reprimanded with
  75. things from imprisonment, torture, toe, public executions sometimes, and the
  76. U. S government technically has the capability of doing the
  77. same thing.
  78. And that is why it is so important to take
  79. a stance against monitoring before we lose our freedom.
