00:01 - 00:02
So for this presentation,
00:02 - 00:10
we're going to be breaking down two of the learning environments that are inside of
00:11 - 00:14
what we know to be the design of learning environments.
00:15 - 00:19
So it's known that Children today need to be able to understand
00:20 - 00:26
um their state of knowledge and as well how to build on it, but in order to do so
00:27 - 00:32
kids today need to be able to know how to reflect on what they know
00:32 - 00:39
and also assess what they know in order to find ways to improve and um
00:39 - 00:46
start increasing in their ability to learn and their ability to um you know,
00:46 - 00:51
gain feedback and etcetera and how to reciprocate feedback,
00:51 - 00:55
turning it into improving and back and forth.
00:56 - 00:58
So for my presentation
00:58 - 01:01
we are going to highlight assessment
01:01 - 01:05
centered environments and community centered environments
01:07 - 01:12
um to start off with, we are going to go with assessment centered environment.
01:13 - 01:18
So it says that the key principle provides opportunities for comments
01:18 - 01:22
and correcting curriculum to ensure that it needs students learning goals.
01:23 - 01:27
So what this means, like we were talking about
01:27 - 01:32
it, kind of within the four learning environments that we have.
01:32 - 01:38
This one highlights and its main point is to be able to provide
01:38 - 01:39
that
01:39 - 01:40
um
01:41 - 01:42
Children with the ability
01:42 - 01:44
and the opportunities to
01:45 - 01:50
um gained feedback and gain comments from peers and from teachers,
01:50 - 01:56
educators and be able to grow that ability to correct
01:57 - 02:00
um what they know and the curriculum that they're gaining
02:00 - 02:06
to ensure that it meets their needs and also for um teachers too,
02:07 - 02:10
see how a child is reciprocating
02:11 - 02:15
and understanding the information and how a teacher can
02:15 - 02:21
um correct the curriculum or the lesson plans to better
02:21 - 02:25
fit the needs of that child and their learning goals.
02:25 - 02:26
And so there are
02:27 - 02:33
two assessment centered environments that we that was said on the
02:34 - 02:36
on the paper, on the reading that we did,
02:36 - 02:39
One was formative and the second was some motive,
02:40 - 02:41
so informative.
02:41 - 02:43
It says that the assessment within school
02:43 - 02:46
settings that help improve teaching and learning.
02:46 - 02:48
So the two
02:49 - 02:50
um
02:50 - 02:56
the two examples that it gave were portfolios and self assessments, so portfolios,
02:56 - 03:03
it's you know, um when you are provided with a whole bunch of different materials.
03:03 - 03:04
Homeworks
03:04 - 03:10
um works that you collect from a child and you're able to look at it and assess what
03:10 - 03:11
they are able to do,
03:11 - 03:15
what they're capable of doing and seeing from there how you
03:15 - 03:19
can improve their work and how you can improve your teaching
03:19 - 03:22
in order for a child to succeed
03:23 - 03:24
in the school environment.
03:24 - 03:26
Also, self assessments,
03:26 - 03:33
this can be um a teacher reflecting on the lesson plan or the day
03:33 - 03:35
and seeing what went wrong,
03:35 - 03:39
what went great and what you can do to better it for the
03:39 - 03:43
next time to ensure that a child is more on your page.
03:43 - 03:44
Um
03:45 - 03:47
And so we also go with some motive
03:47 - 03:49
which let me
03:49 - 03:50
make it bigger. So we can see
03:51 - 03:58
it assesses the student's learning by measurement. So what that means is it is the
03:58 - 04:04
kind of like the portfolio where you um take graded tests, homework worksheets
04:05 - 04:10
and all of those fun things and you just write small feedback
04:10 - 04:16
on the papers for either you or the child to look at
04:17 - 04:19
and it's more measuring
04:20 - 04:20
um
04:21 - 04:23
it's grading or measuring what the child
04:24 - 04:26
did well and
04:26 - 04:28
as well either what they did,
04:28 - 04:31
we can say wrong or what they can improve on.
04:32 - 04:36
So um here I added also from the reading, the
04:37 - 04:37
um
04:38 - 04:40
The figure 6.1
04:40 - 04:43
perspectives on learning environments. It kind of shows
04:43 - 04:47
that learning center knowledge centered and assessment centered,
04:47 - 04:49
they all do really go hand in hand,
04:50 - 04:53
but also we have community centered which is
04:53 - 04:55
around all of them that really shows that
04:56 - 05:01
community is actually a very important part of
05:01 - 05:08
um a child's environment which leads us to community centered environments.
05:08 - 05:09
So
05:10 - 05:11
um the
05:11 - 05:16
main point or the main I guess explanation or definition that I got from,
05:16 - 05:20
it was learning from one another to gain improvement and growth.
05:21 - 05:23
So this is
05:24 - 05:24
um
05:25 - 05:26
the examples provided,
05:26 - 05:31
it was in class at the school through peers through teachers
05:31 - 05:36
and also it's said that one of the biggest factors is
05:37 - 05:39
the outside ecological
05:39 - 05:40
system, so
05:41 - 05:42
it can be,
05:42 - 05:48
it can be families, it could be businesses, um you know, social media,
05:48 - 05:50
um friend groups,
05:50 - 05:55
um anything that you can think of that really the child interacts with and um
05:56 - 05:57
where they are
05:58 - 05:59
being able to
05:59 - 06:04
get different um input and different feedbacks and where
06:04 - 06:07
they're learning from when they aren't at school.
06:07 - 06:08
I also liked this
06:09 - 06:10
figure,
06:10 - 06:15
it shows that only Children only spend 14% of
06:15 - 06:21
their time in school and then 33% sleeping and
06:22 - 06:22
um
06:23 - 06:28
53% at home and in the community. So it does show that
06:28 - 06:31
school is only a very small part
06:31 - 06:35
of their learning environment and so home and community areas,
06:36 - 06:36
it is
06:37 - 06:41
almost more important that they get um
06:42 - 06:45
a good stable area for them to learn in
06:45 - 06:50
because it is a big factor in gaining improvement and gaining that growth.
06:50 - 06:54
So here um it says learning from other
06:54 - 06:57
practices can assist on improving one's own practices.
06:57 - 07:05
So this goes hand in hand with fears and stuff. So a child can see how another
07:06 - 07:06
um
07:07 - 07:10
another student or a teacher can see how another teacher
07:10 - 07:11
does
07:12 - 07:13
there
07:13 - 07:16
teaching or does their teaching styles
07:17 - 07:23
see their ways of doing things and doing. So they're able to
07:23 - 07:26
reflect on how they do something or
07:26 - 07:27
how
07:27 - 07:28
they are able to
07:29 - 07:33
do the work or their teaching style and they're able to either
07:34 - 07:38
like how they do it or they can change or alter it too
07:39 - 07:43
better their ways and seeing how this other teacher,
07:43 - 07:46
this other student was having possibly a better outcome.
07:47 - 07:52
So there was an example versus the chinese and the american practices.
07:52 - 07:58
It said that in um sorry, japanese, the japanese, what they do is they,
07:58 - 08:03
they love reflecting on what child did wrong or what a child um
08:03 - 08:09
had incorrect and really pointing that out with peers and being able
08:09 - 08:13
to really reflect on it and seeing what they can do better
08:13 - 08:19
to improve and to gain that growth in their education or in whatever they're doing.
08:20 - 08:25
And it said in american practices that's not as seen, you know,
08:25 - 08:27
doing something wrong, it's seen as
08:29 - 08:32
not very good, I guess, you can say,
08:32 - 08:38
and it says that american practices possibly we can learn from the japanese and
08:39 - 08:44
really helped the kids reflect on what they did wrong and really going through it and
08:44 - 08:45
into detail
08:45 - 08:47
and possibly,
08:47 - 08:47
you know,
08:48 - 08:53
um really just learning from it and growing from it and seeing
08:54 - 08:58
next time what we can do to make it right or what we can do to improve
08:58 - 08:59
on it.
08:59 - 09:05
Um lastly, I'm really just going to leave with this quote that I really liked that
09:06 - 09:09
Barth had put inside of the
09:09 - 09:11
paper, has said,
09:11 - 09:15
the relationship among adults who live in a school has more to do with the character
09:15 - 09:17
and quality of the school and with the
09:17 - 09:20
accomplishments of the students than any other factor.
09:21 - 09:22
So
09:23 - 09:28
it's kind of at least how I took it. It just says that even though we are
09:29 - 09:30
providing
09:31 - 09:35
um materials and we're providing all of these resources
09:35 - 09:39
for students to learn one of the most important
09:40 - 09:46
um factors for a child to grow and really gain
09:47 - 09:51
that quality time in school is really the
09:51 - 09:53
relationships whether it be with the adults,
09:53 - 09:54
the teachers
09:54 - 09:56
who are really
09:56 - 09:59
there to help them or even just their peers.
09:59 - 10:00
Um
10:01 - 10:03
When you are able to
10:04 - 10:09
working really on relationships, you're able to build that sense of community
10:10 - 10:14
that is able to help you get from here and really grow
10:14 - 10:15
too.
10:15 - 10:18
Um, the best version of yourself, I guess, you can say,
10:19 - 10:24
um overall I know here we aren't covering um the
10:24 - 10:29
um knowledge center or the learner centered, but um,
10:29 - 10:31
these two
10:32 - 10:35
assessment centered and community centers are definitely a
10:35 - 10:39
big factor in designing the learning environments and
10:40 - 10:44
really all of them very well go hand in hand
10:45 - 10:45
and
10:46 - 10:50
really help the child be the best version of themselves.
