00:01 - 00:04
Hello. My name is Jo Koy Rock More and I
00:04 - 00:05
am from Atlanta, Georgia.
00:05 - 00:08
I still live here in Atlanta and I've lived here
00:09 - 00:11
all my life except for a few years from when
00:11 - 00:14
I went to a more traditional college in, um, Tuskegee,
00:15 - 00:16
Alabama, to the university.
00:18 - 00:20
I currently work as a kindergarten teacher here in Atlanta.
00:21 - 00:23
I love working as a kindergarten teacher.
00:24 - 00:26
This is my first year as a lead teacher.
00:26 - 00:30
I spent three years as a, um as an associate
00:31 - 00:33
teacher, which is kind of the same thing as a
00:33 - 00:33
pair of professional.
00:34 - 00:37
Um and yeah, this is my first year is the
00:38 - 00:42
lead. I got my bachelor's from Ashford back in February,
00:42 - 00:44
so I was able to apply for a leave position
00:45 - 00:47
and I got it s so I was very excited.
00:47 - 00:51
Even though we're virtual, um very exciting for me, I
00:51 - 00:53
wanted to be a teacher all my life.
00:54 - 00:56
Uh, that is my son Kobe.
00:57 - 00:59
There he's 10 years old.
00:59 - 01:01
I know he looks very big, but he's only 10.
01:02 - 01:03
He'll be 11 next year.
01:04 - 01:06
Kobe is who my life revolves around.
01:06 - 01:10
So I'm usually doing my work on the sideline of
01:10 - 01:14
a football field on the sideline of a basketball court.
01:15 - 01:16
Um, he's very active in sports.
01:17 - 01:18
He plays, but basketball.
01:19 - 01:20
He's played soccer, tennis.
01:21 - 01:25
He has, uh, lacrosse, everything.
01:26 - 01:30
He's very active and physical, very funny and smart kid.
01:30 - 01:33
And yeah, that's my boy.
01:33 - 01:38
Also, soas faras my encounters with special education.
01:39 - 01:43
Um, I don't have too many encounters with special education
01:44 - 01:46
because I'm a kindergarten teacher.
01:46 - 01:51
So, typically, for me to have an encounter with our
01:51 - 01:55
special education department, Ah, child would have to be diagnosed
01:56 - 01:58
as special needs before entering kindergarten.
01:59 - 02:02
And that's, um, that's rare at my school.
02:03 - 02:07
Um, usually they try toe wait, um, and see if
02:07 - 02:12
things can be attributed to age and personality and things
02:13 - 02:13
like that.
02:13 - 02:18
But I have had a few kids, a couple kids
02:18 - 02:22
who have, um, who had exceptional needs in my class,
02:23 - 02:25
and my experiences were definitely minimal.
02:25 - 02:28
Um, they had their own teachers that would come into
02:28 - 02:30
the classroom what they call push in.
02:31 - 02:35
Um, so I didn't have to do much in that
02:35 - 02:38
area, and if they needed to be pulled out of
02:38 - 02:39
the classroom, they would be pulled out.
02:39 - 02:46
And while we did collaborate on things, um, their main.
02:47 - 02:48
Uh, teacher.
02:48 - 02:49
Was there a special ed teacher?
02:52 - 02:58
Alright, Yeah, there's Coby, So All right, let's move along.
03:02 - 03:07
Alright. So my professional goals, I am currently pursuing my
03:08 - 03:13
masters degree in education with a specialization in curriculum and
03:14 - 03:17
instruction. I want to continue to be a teacher.
03:18 - 03:19
I want to eventually become a principle.
03:20 - 03:24
And I think I may want Thio become an instructional
03:26 - 03:32
specialist. Um, but I'm not sure about it, so Yeah,
03:32 - 03:34
I also want to work for the Board of Education
03:35 - 03:37
in my in my city one year.
03:39 - 03:43
Monday s Oh, I'm hoping that knowledge from this course
03:44 - 03:48
will give me some insight as to whether I want
03:48 - 03:51
to spend a year, um, in special education.
03:52 - 03:55
I've I've always thought it would be a good experience
03:56 - 03:56
toe have.
03:56 - 03:59
So I'm hoping this course will give me some more
03:59 - 04:01
insight into whether I want to do that or not.
04:05 - 04:08
So next I'm gonna talk to you about my current
04:09 - 04:15
knowledge, so I don't have lunch knowledge of laws that
04:16 - 04:20
govern special education and experience with exceptional learners.
04:21 - 04:26
I do know that, um, a is a very private
04:27 - 04:31
process when, um, we have meetings for those students.
04:32 - 04:35
Privacy is always, always, always stressed.
04:35 - 04:38
We can't even email and use those students.
04:39 - 04:42
Full name and inclusiveness is always stressed.
04:43 - 04:50
So that's, um no, no, that's about the extent of
04:50 - 04:54
my knowledge about exceptional liners.
04:55 - 04:56
Eso for folio.
04:57 - 04:58
I've already had a folio.
04:59 - 05:00
I don't visit it much.
05:01 - 05:05
Um, it was pretty pretty easy to set up, and
05:07 - 05:10
I hope it becomes more useful for me in the
05:10 - 05:13
future. And that's just a picture of me with some
05:13 - 05:17
of my students A couple years ago, Um, and I
05:18 - 05:19
made them put on a little Tuskegee hats.
05:20 - 05:24
Um, I hope you guys do well and the rest
05:25 - 05:25
of this course
