00:00 - 00:01
Hi everybody.
00:02 - 00:04
So this is weeks five discussion and we're talking about
00:05 - 00:07
scaffolding, so exactly what is that?
00:07 - 00:11
Well, scaffolding is pretty much breaking up learning into different
00:11 - 00:14
chunks and then being able to arrive tools and structures
00:14 - 00:17
within each chunk that is going to help aid you
00:17 - 00:18
in your teaching.
00:18 - 00:22
Um So when you're looking at your teaching, there are
00:22 - 00:26
three methods that I think will support blended learning very,
00:26 - 00:26
very well.
00:27 - 00:29
And the first one I'm going to talk about is
00:29 - 00:33
quality. So when you're thinking about quality, you want to
00:33 - 00:37
make sure the quality of your instruction as a teacher
00:38 - 00:39
is very good.
00:39 - 00:41
You want to make sure you're doing things like encouraging
00:41 - 00:45
eye contact, developing cooperation between the students, um and make
00:46 - 00:49
sure you're encouraging active learning and then emphasizing on time,
00:49 - 00:51
task, eye contact is very important.
00:52 - 00:54
I think I contact makes people feel like you're more
00:54 - 00:56
engaged and you can get engaged from your audience as
00:57 - 00:58
well. If they're actually paying attention to you.
00:58 - 01:02
If you're developing cooperation between students, it's going to make
01:02 - 01:05
it even better for you as an instructor because everyone
01:05 - 01:06
has that social need for something.
01:07 - 01:10
So that social need for networking and that social need
01:10 - 01:14
for being able to interact with other people help students
01:14 - 01:15
and brings them together.
01:15 - 01:18
So they were able to cooperate more within your classroom
01:19 - 01:21
and then looking and encouraging active learning.
01:22 - 01:23
You want to make sure your students are paying attention
01:23 - 01:25
to your not they're not just listening to what you're
01:25 - 01:28
saying, they're hearing it and they're able to listen to
01:28 - 01:31
it and then they're able to also apply what they've
01:32 - 01:34
heard and be able to comprehend it in a different
01:35 - 01:37
setting. So if you were giving them a performance test,
01:37 - 01:40
like a test or project, you can see the output
01:40 - 01:43
of if they were actually listening through that and then
01:43 - 01:47
you're going to have uh making sure you're emphasizing on
01:47 - 01:48
time task.
01:48 - 01:51
I know our teacher got into it us about making
01:51 - 01:53
sure we turn our products in on time.
01:53 - 01:54
So that's why it's very important.
01:55 - 01:57
You have time to go through everybody's stuff and grade
01:57 - 02:00
everybody accordingly and you're not trying to rush you with
02:00 - 02:00
different things.
02:01 - 02:03
Um, and so the next one I'm going to talk
02:03 - 02:07
about is cooperation kind of hit on it just a
02:07 - 02:07
little bit ago.
02:08 - 02:09
Um, but to go a little bit of further with
02:10 - 02:13
it. Cooperation is on both ends, not only just from
02:13 - 02:16
the students with them, but also for the instructor with
02:16 - 02:17
the students as well.
02:18 - 02:21
The instructor has to cooperate with the students and they
02:21 - 02:22
have to all be on the same page and understand
02:23 - 02:25
that hey, we are here for a reason and we
02:25 - 02:25
are here for a purpose.
02:26 - 02:28
Let me explain the purpose to you because what I
02:29 - 02:31
find is with my classroom, if they understand the purpose
02:31 - 02:34
or understand the why and the reasoning behind why we're
02:34 - 02:36
here or why we're doing things, they're able to knock
02:37 - 02:39
out those tasks a lot easier and they are more
02:39 - 02:41
productive in that manner.
02:41 - 02:45
The last thing I'm gonna cover is focused, focus is
02:45 - 02:45
very important.
02:46 - 02:49
You have to be focused with your learning and you
02:49 - 02:51
have to be focused with your different outcomes.
02:51 - 02:53
You have to be fair and you have to be
02:53 - 02:54
equal across the board.
02:54 - 02:56
Um, it's easy to look at students and you know,
02:57 - 02:59
you kind of have your favorite students that they're always
02:59 - 03:01
doing everything that you ask of them and then there's
03:01 - 03:02
sometimes that they're not.
03:03 - 03:04
So you have to make sure that you look and
03:05 - 03:08
you see, hey, I'm being fair all around all around
03:08 - 03:10
the board and I'm paying attention to my students as
03:10 - 03:16
well. So how can blended learning um help you with
03:17 - 03:17
online learning?
03:18 - 03:19
So how can you blend the face to face classroom
03:20 - 03:21
with your online learning environment?
03:21 - 03:24
Um It's something that I think is an easy process.
03:25 - 03:27
It's just, you have to have a solid plan and
03:27 - 03:29
you have to have a method of delivery that you're
03:29 - 03:31
actually going to use and then you have to have
03:32 - 03:34
a good way to gauge what you're gonna do.
03:34 - 03:37
I think the idea of flipping your classroom, so having
03:38 - 03:40
certain days of classroom maybe like when you teach them
03:41 - 03:41
like instructions.
03:42 - 03:44
Um so for me, I have performance tests that they
03:44 - 03:44
have to complete.
03:45 - 03:48
Um for me flipping that class would be instead of
03:48 - 03:50
me doing it all virtual or all in class, I
03:50 - 03:54
can flip the class say monday, Tuesday Wednesday, I give
03:54 - 03:57
them directions on monday, they have Tuesday Wednesday to work
03:57 - 03:59
on it, thursday we come in and they actually deliver
04:00 - 04:02
that performance has, so that's just going to be a
04:02 - 04:03
briefing that they have to do.
04:03 - 04:06
Um and I think that will really aid in um
04:06 - 04:10
trying to blend face to face with online learning or
04:10 - 04:12
at least how I would like to do and to
04:12 - 04:15
you. So having a plan and then flip in your
04:15 - 04:18
classroom will be great ideas of doing that.
04:19 - 04:22
So they, number three I have point I have, is
04:22 - 04:23
going to be evolving the role of teachers.
04:24 - 04:27
Teachers have to up all, they have to have high
04:27 - 04:29
energy, they have to be ready, they have to be
04:29 - 04:33
technically literate in order to get these things done because
04:33 - 04:37
having the technical literacy and the energy and then also
04:37 - 04:41
lastly, the motivation will help engage the students even more
04:41 - 04:43
because if I come in the classroom every single day
04:43 - 04:46
and I'm just like, well, hello students today, we're going
04:46 - 04:49
to do this and tomorrow we're going to do that
04:49 - 04:52
versus how I normally am high students.
04:52 - 04:52
Good morning.
04:53 - 04:54
So glad to see you today, we're going to accomplish
04:55 - 04:55
such and such.
04:56 - 04:56
X, Y Z.
04:57 - 04:59
You can see the difference with the inflection of the
04:59 - 05:00
voice of the tone and different things.
05:00 - 05:02
It will make them be more engaged.
05:02 - 05:05
That energy would transfer to them whether you're in a
05:05 - 05:07
face to face environment or in a virtual setting.
05:09 - 05:11
And then the last thing I want to talk about
05:11 - 05:14
is the challenges of transitioning to online learning.
05:15 - 05:16
So of course digital literacy.
05:17 - 05:18
Do you have the tools that you need?
05:19 - 05:20
Are you literate in the technical world?
05:21 - 05:23
A lot of people aren't at the same level of
05:23 - 05:27
technology, the kids coming into this generation, especially within the
05:27 - 05:29
military. A lot technically smarter than a lot of us.
05:30 - 05:31
So we have to play ketchup and we have to
05:31 - 05:33
know how to use these things like zoom or Microsoft
05:34 - 05:34
teams, whatever.
05:34 - 05:37
We decide to use google dot, when versus a lot
05:37 - 05:39
of the students, they already know how to do those
05:39 - 05:41
things. So we have to make sure that we're meeting
05:41 - 05:43
in the middle and we're all on the same page
05:44 - 05:45
and that goes for the students as well.
05:45 - 05:47
If we use the method that they're not used to,
05:47 - 05:48
they have to be able to adjust that.
05:49 - 05:50
We have to be able to teach them in order
05:51 - 05:51
to adjust that.
05:52 - 05:54
Um, you also have a weak internet.
05:54 - 05:55
Internet can be very shoddy.
05:56 - 05:58
Sometimes even in my house, I have a good internet
05:59 - 06:01
packages. Sometimes it can go out depending on the weather
06:02 - 06:03
and that could be anywhere.
06:03 - 06:05
So you have to make sure that everyone has a
06:05 - 06:06
strong internet connection.
06:07 - 06:10
And then lastly, your time management time management is going
06:10 - 06:13
to be very important because of course in a online
06:13 - 06:17
class you are often given different tasks to complete and
06:17 - 06:18
at different dates you have stuff to do.
06:19 - 06:22
Like, for instance, our class, we have, you know, our
06:22 - 06:24
stuff comes out on Wednesday on saturday.
06:25 - 06:28
Our initial responses are doing it on that Tuesday are
06:28 - 06:31
before that Tuesday are two responses are due.
06:31 - 06:34
So it's important that you stay on task and if
06:34 - 06:36
you manage your time wisely, I know a lot of
06:36 - 06:37
us work during the day.
06:37 - 06:38
Of course I do.
06:38 - 06:40
And I normally don't get home until 56 o'clock at
06:41 - 06:42
night, so I have to try to manage my time
06:43 - 06:45
wisely. Sometimes on my lunch break I'll do my work
06:46 - 06:47
or sometimes after I get off work and come home
06:48 - 06:49
and cook dinner and all that stuff to take care
06:49 - 06:50
of the house.
06:50 - 06:52
I'll go ahead and take care of it then.
06:52 - 06:55
So, time management for yourself and your students is very
06:55 - 06:58
important. Um, and making sure that they accomplish all these
06:58 - 06:59
different tests that they have.
07:00 - 07:02
So these articles that we read this week, they really
07:02 - 07:05
do talk about scaffolding and these particular things that we
07:05 - 07:08
were able to point out, really do aid in that
07:08 - 07:11
process. You breaking everything down just like the project we're
07:11 - 07:13
about to do with breaking every single thing down and
07:14 - 07:15
were able to get through it.
