00:01 - 00:03
Hello, South Williamsport area School district.
00:04 - 00:04
Fifth graders.
00:05 - 00:07
My name is Amanda, and I'm Samantha.
00:09 - 00:11
And we're from the Pen College General Hygiene Program.
00:12 - 00:14
And we're coming to you two guys today and we're
00:14 - 00:17
going to talk about healthy foods and non healthy foods
00:17 - 00:18
and how they affect your teeth.
00:23 - 00:26
All right, so we have a slide right here, and
00:27 - 00:29
we're going to talk to you about what we eat
00:29 - 00:31
is important, as you can see.
00:31 - 00:32
What? This little girl eating the apple.
00:33 - 00:35
She's choosing a healthy choice of eating an apple and
00:36 - 00:38
maybe that kid to the rights, not making the best
00:38 - 00:40
choice of eating that chocolate cake.
00:41 - 00:43
Okay. Uh huh.
00:44 - 00:49
Yeah. So, like I said, the foods we eat are
00:49 - 00:50
important to our health.
00:50 - 00:53
It is important to understand what unhealthy and healthy foods
00:54 - 00:56
can do to our bodies and to our teeth.
00:59 - 01:02
Mhm. And right here, I'm just going to blow this
01:02 - 01:04
up so you guys can see it nice and clear.
01:05 - 01:07
This is the food guide pyramid.
01:08 - 01:10
So as you can see on the food guide pyramid
01:10 - 01:13
here on the bottom, where it's nice and large, these
01:13 - 01:14
are the foods that you should be eating.
01:14 - 01:16
The most because they're the best for our health.
01:17 - 01:20
And then as this pyramids get skinnier and skinnier at
01:20 - 01:22
the top, these are the food you should be eating
01:22 - 01:23
them least stuff.
01:23 - 01:28
And that includes, like soda and sugary cakes and Candies,
01:29 - 01:30
stuff that we just know.
01:30 - 01:31
It's not good for our teeth, right?
01:37 - 01:39
So for this slide, we would just like to help
01:40 - 01:42
you guys understand that each food that we eat in
01:42 - 01:46
liquid is paired into a category of Kariya genic and
01:46 - 01:47
non cardiogenic.
01:48 - 01:51
Carry a genic means that this food or drink contributes
01:52 - 01:52
to the start of cavities.
01:53 - 01:57
While non cardiogenic foods do not contribute to the start
01:58 - 02:01
of cavities, I have a few pictures of foods here
02:01 - 02:04
that I would like you all to think about and
02:04 - 02:06
put each of these foods into a category.
02:07 - 02:10
So either so the grapes, the bread, the water, the
02:11 - 02:12
soda and the ice cream.
02:14 - 02:20
So for the grapes dot would be considered a carrier
02:20 - 02:21
genic food.
02:21 - 02:24
They are a healthy food choice, but however, they have
02:24 - 02:27
a natural source of sugar and are also acidic, which
02:27 - 02:30
can be have a negative effect on our teeth.
02:32 - 02:35
Read as well as carry a genic due to the
02:35 - 02:39
breakdown of carbohydrates, it breaks down into sugars, which sugars
02:40 - 02:41
we know are not good for our teeth.
02:42 - 02:46
Water, on the other hand, is non cardiogenic and what
02:47 - 02:49
are contributes to a healthy mouth.
02:50 - 02:53
Soda, we all know, has a lot of sugar, and
02:54 - 02:55
we should really limit this in our diet.
02:57 - 02:58
Ice cream is the hardest part.
02:59 - 03:01
We all love ice cream, but this is something that
03:01 - 03:03
we should limit in our diet as well.
03:03 - 03:06
Just because of the large amount of sugars that it
03:06 - 03:13
has now, we're going to discuss acid production.
03:14 - 03:16
We talked about how grapes can be acidic and how
03:16 - 03:20
that takes a negative effect on our teeth, and most
03:20 - 03:23
foods also have acid in it due to the sugars,
03:24 - 03:27
so liquids clear the mouth within 20 minutes.
03:28 - 03:30
So if you were to drink a soda each sip
03:30 - 03:32
within 20 minutes, it would take to clear.
03:33 - 03:35
But the thing with that is that if you take
03:36 - 03:38
one sip, the clock restarts with your next sip.
03:39 - 03:42
And with foods, it's the same thing, but with 40
03:42 - 03:44
minutes. So if you take a bite into a piece
03:44 - 03:47
of cake, it takes 40 minutes for it to clear,
03:48 - 03:49
but the next bite.
03:49 - 03:52
If that's within the next two minutes, it restarts the
03:52 - 03:54
clock and then it starts up 40 minutes again.
03:55 - 03:58
Our goal for a healthy mouth is to have an
03:58 - 03:58
acid production.
03:59 - 04:05
Time for the day is 16 minutes now.
04:05 - 04:08
We would like everyone to get out there one day
04:08 - 04:12
food diary and calculate their acid production time with the
04:12 - 04:14
information that we just gave you.
04:14 - 04:18
Given that carry a genic foods clear within 40 minutes
04:19 - 04:22
and cryogenic liquids clear within 20 minutes.
04:27 - 04:30
Now that we've talked about the foods we eat and
04:30 - 04:32
how they contribute to our dental health, we would also
04:33 - 04:36
like to go over how to have a healthy mouth
04:37 - 04:39
due to home care, which is brushing and flossing.
04:42 - 04:46
Everyone should be flossing and brushing every day two times
04:46 - 04:48
brushing daily and flossing.
04:48 - 04:51
One time before bed, Amanda and I are going to
04:51 - 04:54
show you the proper way to brush and flaws, which
04:54 - 04:57
will be most effective to prevent cavities and have a
04:57 - 04:57
healthy mouth.
04:58 - 05:00
Do you want to start with Awesome?
05:00 - 05:05
Sure. So this is our cool mouth model we have
05:06 - 05:07
here, and it's really cool.
05:08 - 05:10
The teeth actually come out, but they go right back
05:10 - 05:13
in. So I'm gonna show you how you should be
05:14 - 05:16
flossing your teeth right here.
05:16 - 05:17
I just have some regular flaws.
05:18 - 05:20
There are a lot of different flaws that you can
05:20 - 05:23
buy. Um, if you go to your guardian mom or
05:24 - 05:26
Dad, they would be able to help you get different
05:27 - 05:28
types of floss picks to.
05:29 - 05:31
And so what you would do with the regular floss.
05:32 - 05:33
I'm going to show you the proper way to do
05:33 - 05:34
it, and it can be hard.
05:35 - 05:36
So if you ever need help, make sure that you
05:36 - 05:39
reach out and you ask help from your guardian mom
05:39 - 05:41
or dad or even your school hygienist, Mrs.
05:41 - 05:45
Hicks. There's also YouTube videos out there, too, if you
05:45 - 05:46
are interested in looking that up.
05:47 - 05:49
So first, what you do is you get a very
05:49 - 05:52
nice long piece of loss, and then you wrap this
05:52 - 05:57
around your middle fingers nice and loosely again.
05:58 - 06:00
This takes practice, so if it's hard at first, that's
06:00 - 06:01
completely normal.
06:03 - 06:05
Then you're going to use your pointer finger and your
06:05 - 06:08
thumb, and you are going to wrap the floss around
06:08 - 06:11
your pointer finger and thumb and what you do is
06:12 - 06:13
when you put it in between the tooth.
06:13 - 06:17
Here, you make a C shape around that tooth just
06:18 - 06:18
like this.
06:18 - 06:20
You want to make sure you make a C shape
06:20 - 06:22
around that tooth and you go up and down the
06:23 - 06:25
tooth about two or three times and you do to
06:25 - 06:26
the other side to.
06:27 - 06:29
But the thing is, now that piece of false is
06:30 - 06:32
all dirty with all your plaque and germs, so you
06:32 - 06:34
have to rotate that flaw.
06:34 - 06:36
So you get a nice, clean piece each and every
06:36 - 06:38
time, and then you do the next surface.
06:39 - 06:42
Here, make sure you do not go up and down
06:42 - 06:44
because you're not getting all the plaque out.
06:45 - 06:46
You want to make sure that you make that C
06:46 - 06:50
shape go up and down, and then the other side
06:50 - 06:52
to and again practice.
06:52 - 06:55
Take practice makes perfect when it comes to flossing.
06:57 - 07:01
And now I'm going to demonstrate the modified bass technique
07:02 - 07:02
for brushing.
07:03 - 07:05
This is the most effective way of brushing and has
07:06 - 07:10
been scientifically proven to eliminate a plaque biofilm from the
07:10 - 07:12
surfaces. They're a proper amount.
07:14 - 07:17
So what I want you to do is start in
07:17 - 07:20
the most post most back part of your mouth.
07:21 - 07:26
Either the talk, the bottom or either side, and I
07:26 - 07:29
want you to start with an angle of 45 degree
07:29 - 07:33
angle. I'll show you this way like this towards the
07:33 - 07:38
gums and brush over two or three teeth back and
07:38 - 07:39
forth, about like, 10 times.
07:40 - 07:42
And then when you're ready to move on, we want
07:42 - 07:44
you to go down and then we want to overlap.
07:45 - 07:49
So no surfaces are missed, and then we just want
07:49 - 07:52
to keep doing that as we go across your teeth.
07:53 - 07:56
And the perfect way to do this is also to
07:56 - 07:59
play your favorite song or set a timer.
08:00 - 08:03
Have mom or dad or guardian set your timer so
08:04 - 08:09
it ensures that you're brushing for two minutes and you
08:09 - 08:15
just want to keep going and overlapping and doing that
08:15 - 08:16
across all surfaces of your teeth.
08:17 - 08:19
We also don't want to forget about the inside of
08:20 - 08:21
our teeth because that touches food, too.
08:22 - 08:24
We want to do the same thing that I just
08:25 - 08:29
showed you, but on the inside and roll down, you're
08:29 - 08:30
doing that angle and then you're rolling down.
08:31 - 08:32
And then when you get to your front teeth on
08:33 - 08:33
the inside.
08:33 - 08:35
We're just going to kind of brush like this.
08:35 - 08:38
This really helps get in between the gums and also
08:39 - 08:41
cleans off the teeth in a better way.
08:41 - 08:43
Because if you were to brush like this, sometimes our
08:44 - 08:46
mouths are too tiny for the toothbrush to fit, and
08:47 - 08:48
it doesn't really contact the teeth as well.
08:49 - 08:51
Yeah, so then you just keep going with that angle
08:53 - 08:54
and rolling down.
08:55 - 08:57
And we don't want to forget about our biting surfaces
08:58 - 09:01
either. And you can just brush that, like, normal.
09:02 - 09:05
And you would repeat that for the bottom arch as
09:05 - 09:09
well. And don't forget to brush the roof of your
09:09 - 09:10
mouth slightly and your tongue.
09:11 - 09:12
That is very important for home care.
09:14 - 09:14
Mm hmm.
09:17 - 09:18
Where to go.
09:23 - 09:26
Right. So what we want you to remember is to
09:26 - 09:28
always make healthy food choices.
09:29 - 09:31
Remember to brush your teeth two times a day for
09:32 - 09:34
at least two minutes each time in the morning and
09:35 - 09:35
at night time.
09:35 - 09:38
And to remember to floss at least one time a
09:38 - 09:39
day before bedtime.
09:41 - 09:43
You can always refer back to this video.
09:43 - 09:46
It will be online if you have any questions.
09:47 - 09:52
Also, Mrs takes your school dental hygienist is always there.
09:52 - 09:55
And it's so helpful and has so much knowledge on
09:55 - 09:55
this topic.
09:56 - 09:59
We hope everyone will continue to make healthy food choices
09:59 - 10:02
and help have a healthy, healthy and happy round.
10:02 - 10:03
Thank you.
10:04 - 10:10
Yeah. This is our the, um uh, thank you.
