00:01 - 00:05
Hello class, my name is Justin this was my favorite religion I learned Islam.
00:06 - 00:07
So why I chose Islam?
00:08 - 00:11
Islam was my favorite religion to learn about in this class.
00:11 - 00:14
Others because it was misunderstood in the mainstream,
00:14 - 00:17
especially given the events over the past 20 years and
00:17 - 00:20
I really wanted to know what Islam truly is.
00:22 - 00:23
So what is Islam?
00:24 - 00:25
Well let's start off with the origin.
00:26 - 00:28
Islam was founded by the prophet Mohammed
00:28 - 00:32
In modern day Saudi Arabia around the 7th century ce
00:33 - 00:34
why is that important?
00:35 - 00:37
So two of the most holy sites
00:37 - 00:40
in the muslim world are located in that area,
00:40 - 00:42
that being mecca and medina.
00:44 - 00:46
So how many Muslims are there in the world?
00:46 - 00:47
Well currently
00:48 - 00:52
There's estimated 1.5 to 1.7 billion followers of Islam around the world.
00:54 - 00:57
Moving on to what do Muslims believe in,
00:58 - 01:00
where their main beliefs are that it is
01:00 - 01:03
a monotheistic religion believing in one true god.
01:04 - 01:07
They also follow the teachings of the prophet Mohammed from the holy Koran.
01:09 - 01:12
Some rituals of the Islamic faith are the five pillars
01:13 - 01:16
which involves saying a creed that validates Muhammad is Allah's
01:16 - 01:19
prophet and that Allah is the one true god.
01:19 - 01:22
Then they must have ritual prayer five times daily
01:23 - 01:26
and then an annual taxation to give back to the muslim community.
01:27 - 01:29
In addition they fast during the month of Ramadan
01:30 - 01:34
and then they must have an annual pilgrimage pilgrimage to mecca.
01:34 - 01:36
That all Muslims must do once in their lifetime.
01:40 - 01:41
What do they believe in the afterlife.
01:42 - 01:45
So it's often referred to as paradise in the muslim religion,
01:45 - 01:47
You must follow and fulfill the five pillars
01:48 - 01:50
and then Muslims go to
01:50 - 01:53
Arzak until the day of resurrection comes.
01:55 - 01:56
So how do they worship?
01:58 - 02:00
So they worship through prayer, which is five times a day,
02:00 - 02:04
always facing the direction of Mecca, often using a prayer rug,
02:04 - 02:07
they must donate to charity, as mentioned previously,
02:07 - 02:09
with an annual donation of one's wealth to the community.
02:10 - 02:12
They must also make that once in a lifetime
02:12 - 02:15
trip to Mecca as well as fast during Ramadan.
02:17 - 02:20
Next, we'll talk about Islam's charitable aspects.
02:21 - 02:23
So the Islamic Relief is an agency
02:23 - 02:26
specializing in humanitarian aid and development.
02:26 - 02:29
They build up communities to better withstand natural disasters
02:29 - 02:32
and respond when they happen similar to UNICEF.
02:33 - 02:36
They also advocate globally for climate change and gender justice.
02:37 - 02:40
And Islamic relief is the only UK charity
02:40 - 02:42
to be awarded the core humanitarian certification.
02:46 - 02:47
So what's the Islamist future?
02:47 - 02:51
I believe that Islam will continue to grow in popularity in the coming years.
02:52 - 02:56
Islam is projected to be the fastest-growing religion growing by 70
02:56 - 02:57
by 2060.
02:58 - 03:01
They also have the youngest median age at 24 and
03:01 - 03:04
they have more Children on average than other religions,
03:05 - 03:09
both in the world and in the United States. I see both of these being true
03:09 - 03:12
given the end of the wars in the Middle East and that most young adults
03:13 - 03:15
Not being alive for the events of 9 11,
03:15 - 03:18
I can see the stigma behind Islam fading with time.
03:20 - 03:21
In conclusion,
03:21 - 03:24
Islam is a misunderstood religion that believes in
03:24 - 03:26
one true god and follows Mohammed's teachings of
03:26 - 03:31
faith without fail via the five pillars and they do good work all over the world.
03:31 - 03:34
They support communities. Even in non muslim countries,
03:35 - 03:39
There's currently between 1.5 and 1.8 billion
03:39 - 03:40
Muslims in the world,
03:40 - 03:44
and their population is expected to reach nearly three billion by 2060,
03:45 - 03:47
and this was my favorite religion to learn in this class,
03:47 - 03:50
as I was also misunderstanding this religion
03:52 - 03:53
and here's my work cited.
